- Thanks to the serum his son Chris stole from the Powell house, Roy Minor goes from being an embittered paraplegic to a raging super-powered ATM machine bandit, so strong not even Jim can stand against him.
- Jim's feelings of guilt are overwhelming when, during a fight with a thug, he diverts a bullet that accidentally hits a boy - causing life-threatening harm. Meanwhile, Daphne's boyfriend, Chris, steals the trilsettum serum from the Powell house and injects his wheelchair-bound father, Roy, with disastrous results; Joshua proposes to Katie; and JJ's teacher takes unscrupulous steps to get him to join the school's academic decathlon team.—ABC Publicity
- Jim (Michael Chiklis) is doing his usual crimefighting. With George's (Romany Malco) help, he traps a crook in an alley, who tries to fire a gun at Jim. Jim does his best Wonder Woman impression to deflect the bullets, only one of those bullets deflects into an apartment complex and hits a kid. Jim follows the boy and his mother to the hospital in a massive feeling of guilt, despite George telling him it can't possibly be his fault.
Joshua (Josh Stewart) is really glad to have met Katie (Autumn Reeser). So much so, he proposes to her...rather badly, but she was 96.3% sure that's what he was doing, and she was 100% sure she wanted to accept. ("I always had a crush on Wolverine, but I never gave much thought to if I married Wolverine. And we had little Wolvie babies.") She told Stephanie (Julie Benz) the good news, who insisted on throwing her an engagement party. ("It's what Batman would do for Robin." "I'm pretty sure Robin's a confirmed bachelor, know what I mean?") At the party, Jim is trying to live down the kid being wounded, but Dr. King (Stephen Collins) decided to drop by the engagement and 'congratulate' the happy couple. Of course, Jim and Stephanie know the truth and were wary of Dr. King pulling something...such as stealing the trilsettum serum Stephanie was working on from their house while there. And using it, too.
Jim and Stephanie let Daphne (Kay Panabaker) and JJ (Jimmy Bennett) in on what happened. Dr. King was an obvious suspect, but he had his own serum, so he wouldn't have motive to steal Stephanie's. Joshua, however, needed it to survive, which he denied when Stephanie confronted him. He asked Katie to trust him, especially since they were engaged. She did. Stephanie, not so much.
As JJ tried to get a date with Natalie, who shoots him down because she has to study to get a scholarship, Jim goes to the hospital to apologize to the kid's mother about him being shot. He doesn't tell her how he was involved, of course, but Stephanie wants him to dig deeper into who stole the serum. Jim's next candidate is Chris, Daphne's boyfriend, since he has a record. Jim is worried about releasing a supervillain on the world, and his fears are confirmed when someone punches out an ATM to get the cash inside of it. A witness saw a blue motorcycle in the area, just like the one Chris rode. Jim confronts Chris on it, except another ATM gets robbed right when Jim is accusing Chris. Daphne was, as you may expect, not happy her dad was accusing her boyfriend of theft. Daphne goes to apologize to Chris about her father, but he has no problem with what he did. Except he hugs her, and she gets the whole story. Chris took the serum to heal his father, who had been in a wheelchair from the auto accident from two years ago Chris felt guilty about. Of course, she couldn't tell him that.
JJ gets an interesting offer from Mr. Litchfield (seriously, is there a sleazier teacher on TV without committing any sort of felony?) to make Natalie's road to the scholarship a lot smoother in exchange for JJ joining the academic decathlon team. He doesn't want to do it, but Litchfield gives her the scholarship to use as leverage against JJ. Now he HAS to join the academic decathlon team in order for her to keep it.
Joshua confronts Dr. King at his office. Dr. King tells him he treated Joshua like his own son, but his son wouldn't have been pumped full of experimental medicines like he was. It cured Joshua but turned him into a killer. Dr. King thought Joshua would come back because he needs his serum to survive unless someone else...and Dr. King correctly figures out Stephanie was helping Joshua. And he accuses Joshua of 'loving' Katie to get Stephanie to help him, which Joshua vehemently denied.
At GlobalTech, the serum Stephanie created to counteract the effects of the trilsettum worked on a lab rat. In fact, the antidote even returned the rat's organs to normal. It was time to see if Joshua wanted to have a go at it. He talks to Katie in private, asking her if she really wants him with no powers. She does, and he takes the injection. After a few -like moments, it doesn't work. Joshua is understandably depressed. Dr. King calls Stephanie into his office to explain about Joshua, and Stephanie plays along about not knowing about Joshua's powers. Except Joshua kept one of those powers a secret from her: the ability to erase memories, which he claims Joshua did to Katie at some point. And suddenly Stephanie remembered that happening to Daphne as well.
Meanwhile, Chris found the money his father, Roy (), stole. It turns out he didn't give a crap about working again and simply wanted yet another beer. Apparently he was a career criminal before the accident. But he can get it himself...by punching a hole in the refrigerator. Obviously he can't control the serum. A fact confirmed by bumping into his son (and knocking him down) on the way out the door to another ATM. Jim comes to see Chris' father, and Chris continues to try to cover for him. But Jim tries to convince him to take his dad into custody. Jim finds him, and the fight is on. Except Roy gets the better of Jim and leaves him in a wall. Jim is concerned about trying to take him down, but he should be more concerned that the serum was wearing off on Roy and he had no problem threatening Daphne and her family to get some more, even throwing his own son out of the house...through the window.
George had an idea to help Jim: keep making Roy miss hitting him, thus expending his energy and serum. He had to put it to good use right away, as Chris finally confessed from his hospital bed Roy was going to GlobalTech to get more of the serum. He takes Katie hostage. She hands him the keys and tries to speed her way to injecting him with a sedative. But like Jim, a needle can't penetrate. Roy grabs the vials and heads for the garage, only to be confronted by Jim. Sure enough, Jim takes George's advice and makes Roy keep punching into concrete. Several misses later, plus some well-timed hits, and Roy is down for the count.
But if Jim was mad at Roy, he was ten times as mad at Joshua for erasing her memory, and he all but puts him into a wall at his house. He tried to explain he was trying to prevent Daphne from turing into him. Katie sees the whole thing, and she hands him back his engagement ring.
Daphne goes to look in on Chris, now that his father was gone. He felt guilty about messing up his father's life two years ago in the accident, but Roy had been messing him up for ages. He didn't feel alone, thanks to Daphne. He didn't say 'I love you' to her directly, but thinking it is enough for Daphne. And it turns out Jasper, the kid who got hit by the bullet Jim deflected, had a small tumor inside of him they never would have caught had he not had surgery for the bullet. Jim feels relief. Katie, as you may have expected, was heartbroken. So was Joshua, who left town, only to discover his powers had finally disappeared.
JJ reluctantly joined the academic decathlon team, and we found out why Litchfield wanted him so badly. He was on the take from Dr. King, who wanted JJ to solve a particular math problem.
