Plot: In 1974, an aging hitman (Liam Neeson) tries to leave his violent past behind and reinvent himself in a small, isolated town in Ireland. However, his good nature leads to him making a fateful decision that puts him in the crosshairs of an insane Ira assassin (Kerry Condon) and her cronies.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – another Liam Neeson action flick. Ho-hum. Normally, I’d be right there with you. While no one can deny he’s become the 21st century’s version of Charles Bronson, with him churning out a steady diet of B-level action flicks, not all of them are disposable in the way something like Blacklight, Honest Thief, Retribution and too many others are. Once in a while, he works with a really interesting director, such as on the beautifully photographed Marlowe by Neil Jordan. One of his better recent action flicks was definitely The Marksman,...

It’s been almost two years since we last reported on Steven C. Miller‘s werewolf movie Year 2,starring Frank Grillo. The filmmaker has offered recent updates on social media, teasing that the long wait for action werewolf carnage is nearly over and that it appears to have a new title: Werewolves.
The premise for Werewolves is described as “a supermoon event caused a latent gene to turn everyone exposed to the moonlight into a werewolf for one night. Millions died—and now, the supermoon is back.”
Katrina Law (“NCIS”) stars alongside Grillo as the brilliant geneticist, Dr. Amy Chen, who goes on a dangerous journey with Grillo’s character to saved loved ones, against a ticking clock.
That setup sounds like The Purge: Anarchy but with werewolves, and we’re so in.

Jeffrey Donovan will not be returning as Detective Cosgrove for Season 23 of “Law & Order,” Variety has confirmed.
According to TVLine, who was first to report the news, producers are already on the search for a new series regular. The outlet reports sources claim the two parted ways due to creative differences.
Donovan joined the cast in 2021, portraying Detective Cosgrove in Seasons 21 and 22 of the series revival. Cosgrove, a junior detective, joined the NYPD team as the new partner of Det. Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). “Frank is a tough-as-nails detective that seeks justice by whatever means necessary. Every legal drama needs a bad cop, and Donovan shines,” reads his official character description, per NBC.
Probably best known for his leading work as former CIA operative Michael Westen on the USA series “Burn Notice” for seven seasons, Donovan also gained recognition with notable roles on FX’s “Fargo” and Hulu’s “Shut Eye.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has just tied up an eight-figure deal for domestic rights to The Crow reboot, we can reveal.
Bill Skarsgård (It), singer-songwriter FKA twigs (Honeyboy) and Danny Huston (Succession) lead Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) reimagining of the 1994 cult classic that memorably starred Brandon Lee in his last film role.
In the original revenge thriller, a man who is brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s deaths. Both movies are based on the graphic novel of the gothic character created, written and illustrated by James O’Barr.
CAA Media Finance handled the deal for the film’s domestic rights. John Biondo oversaw on behalf of Lionsgate, with the pact finalized late Wednesday night as the TIFF festival and market gets underway. The movie is expected to release next year.

Plot: A businessman (Liam Neeson) is trapped in his car with his two kids by a mysterious caller who warns him that there’s a bomb under his seat that will go off if anyone tries to exit the vehicle.
Review: Remember when Liam Neeson said he was giving up action movies a few years ago? Many think he wasn’t being serious, but watching his latest, Retribution, I’m almost thinking he was telling the truth as there’s so little going on here in the way of physical action that you could almost call this an “inaction” movie. Indeed, Neeson spends 95% of the running time comfortably seated behind the wheel of his car, making this less taxing than the brawnier movies that made him a late-in-life action star.
As usual, Neeson’s latter-era movies are a mixed bag. I was fond of his recent film noir, Marlowe, and...

Neil Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo” began its domestic box office race with $1.4 million in Thursday previews. That number does not include several word-of-mouth sneak previews that Sony conducted throughout August. Those figures will be rolled into the Friday gross — par for the course for these sorts of roll-outs.
With mixed-positive reviews (a 61% fresh and 5.8/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and thus far decent word of mouth for the old school, non-fantastical crowdpleaser, the studio is hoping that the film starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou can get a boost from Sunday’s $4-a-ticket Cinema Day.
The picture is based on a true story about a teenage Gran Turismo video game player who used his console skills to become a professional race car driver. As such, it’s...

It’s been quite a decade (and a bit) for Signature Entertainment. Having launched in 2011 as a U.K. DVD distribution business (its first release: the live-action/animated adaptation of the classic British children’s book The Velveteen Rabbit), the company — set up by former DVD salesman Marc Goldberg — has evolved and grown with the changing times. It became a major player in the home entertainment space as digital and streamers took over, expanded its distribution into Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.S., and also moved into production.
Signature Film’s first title was the Dave Bautista-starring 2018 action thriller Final Score, a film Goldberg describes as “Die Hard in a football stadium” (and a film that also saw him blow up — on camera, at least — the former stadium of his beloved soccer team West Ham United, whose chairman, David Sullivan, happens to be a major Signature...

Liam Neeson has now starred in 100 films, only a quarter of which are "Taken" sequels. I kid, I kid! Even 15 years into his surprising late-career run as an action star (going back to the original "Taken" in 2008), the Irish thespian retains an eclectic body of work under his belt. Since he started acting in the late 1970s, Neeson's starred in high-art dramas, auteur-driven period pieces, raunchy burlesques, pulpy blockbusters, classic literary adaptations, cheeky animated films, and, yes, more action movies about deadly old-timers than you can shake a stick at. Also, he played Jesus once. Twice, if Aslan from "Chronicles of Narnia" counts.

After years of false starts, The Crow is finally coming back to life with a brand new movie from director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell), with Bill Skarsgård (It) leading the cast as Eric Draven and singer/actor FKA Twigs co-starring. THR updates on the project tonight, reporting that Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) has signed on.
“Details of Huston’s character were not revealed,” THR notes.
The Crow reimagining is finally happening for real this time, as The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the film is “now weeks-deep in production in the Czech Republic.”
Zach Baylin (King Richard) is writing the script, with the new movie of course based on James O’Barr’s original graphic novel that spawned a previous feature film franchise.
Producers on this fresh new reimagining include Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida (Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises), John Jencks,...

Through 18 seasons of Grey's Anatomy, there have been plenty of changes.
Some of the biggest changes come from the cast, as any show that has been on as long as Grey's has surely seen plenty of cast exits.
Luckily, the cast that departed early in the series (or even more recently) can still be seen in other projects. So where are they now?
Isaiah Washington -- Dr. Preston Burke
Isaiah Washington portrayed Dr. Preston Burke for the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy.
Washington also returned as a guest on Grey's Anatomy Season 10 after Cristina left Grey Sloan.
Since leaving Seattle Grace, the actor has remained steady in both TV and film, having been in the main cast of The 100 through The 100 Season 5.
He's also appeared in shows such as Blue Bloods, Bull, Law & Order: LA, and was recurring during Survivor's Remorse Season 4.

Exclusive: The anticipated reboot of cult classic The Crow is heading to the Cannes market with FilmNation Entertainment where it will be among the hot packages.
It and Eternals star Bill Skarsgård will star with singer-actress FKA twigs (Honeyboy) in the modern reimagining of James O’Barr’s graphic novel about a brutally murdered man who comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.
Director Alex Proyas brought the story to the screen in 1994’s The Crow, which starred the late Brandon Lee, and became a cult classic. That film spawned multiple sequels.
This time around Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman) will direct from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard). Producers are Molly Hassell (Terminal), Victor Hadida (Resident Evil), John Jencks (Honest Thief), and Edward R. Pressman, producer of American Psycho, Wall Street and the 1994 Crow.

Consider it the calm before the storm. With Marvel’s eagerly awaited Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness officially kicking off the summer blockbuster season next weekend, the nation’s multiplexes were sleepier than usual… unless, of course, you were a kid (or the parent of one). As the top five movies in North America remained largely unchanged from the previous frame—with The Bad Guys taking top honors again—it’s worth noting that the weekend’s three biggest grossers were all family-friendly titles. Meanwhile, on the other end of the age spectrum, Liam Neeson served up the weekend’s only major new release, Memory. But the action-thriller’s soft, eighth-place opening raised questions whether his once-loyal fanbase has finally grown tired of his “particular set of skills.”

Another weekend, another new Liam Neeson action-thriller in theaters.
“Memory,” the actor’s nth Covid-era caper to play on the big screen, debuted over the weekend to 3.1 million from 2,555 North American cinemas. Its eighth-place finish is a weak result, but one that’s close to Neeson’s recent theatrical releases like “Blacklight” (3.6 million debut), “Honest Thief” (3.6 million debut) and “The Marksman” (3.1 million debut).
Since Open Road Films and Briarcliff Entertainment’s “Memory” is the only new nationwide release, last weekend’s champion “The Bad Guys” topped the box office again. In its sophomore outing, the Universal Pictures animated heist comedy earned 16.1 million from 4,042 locations, bringing its domestic tally to 44.4 million.
“Mr. Neeson’s pre-pandemic crime pics did well, including the successful ‘Taken’ series, but audiences are showing little interest now,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. At the same time, there appears to...

Refresh for chart and more analysis After all the hallelujahs about the return of theatrical at CinemaCon this past week, the major studios skipped out on programming any new wide releases this weekend. All of this is resulting in a marketplace which is seeing an estimated 64M in total ticket sales, down 33 from last weekend. Ugh. In regards to when the majors will sit on the sidelines again this year, it’s set to happen on June 3 and possibly Aug. 12 (Searchlight is holding the date for an untitled wide entry).

April comes to an end with minimal wide releases for the final weekend – just one, actually. This isn’t too unusual, since we’ve been seeing this sort of thing every month this year so far. In this case, it might just be the fact that no studio wants to open a movie in the week before (or after) Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” (Marvel famously shifted 2018’s “Avenger: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” forward a week into late April rather than its customary May/summer movie season kick-off date.) Read on for your box office weekend preview for April 29 – May 1.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. In his first major interview, he outlines his ambitions as a writer-director and as a financier-producer.

Jennifer Lopez wants to save it. Netflix wants to save it. Rose Matafeo wants to save it. Indie film has already saved it. But this weekend, “Marry Me” proved to be another uninspiring example of the studio-backed American rom-com. Even with a title that seemed custom-made for the return of superstar JLo to a genre she appears to genuinely love, plus the multi-hyphenate performing multiple original songs in the film, the film opened this pre-Valentine’s Day weekend to $8 million.
You could blame the slow return of women to theaters, Super Bowl Weekend, or that the film played for free on Peacock; any or all could be true. But here’s another reason: “Marry Me,” like so many rom-coms before it, isn’t very good. While Lopez is an extraordinary performer, all those songs start to feel like product placements. Super Bowl weekend tends to be a pretty pokey period at the multiplex each year as folks are too busy stocking up on chips and dips. But this year, things looked like they might be different. After all, three big, star-driven debuts were set to arrive in theaters on the eve of the Big Game. Sadly, for two of them, the box-office roll of the dice didn’t pay off, with only 20th Century Studios’ Agatha Christie murder-mystery Death on the Nile claiming anything like success as it wrested the top spot from Jackass Forever with $12.8 million in its freshman frame. Meanwhile, despite its Valentine’s Day timing, the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Marry Me bowed in third to a lukewarm $8 million and the latest Liam Neeson action-thriller, Blacklight, opened in fifth to a soft $3.6 million.

20th Century Studios’ “Death on the Nile” has taken the top spot at the box office this weekend with an opening of just $12.8 million from 3,280 theaters and a global opening of $33.5 million.
While that result is consistent with the $11-13 million projections for the Agatha Christie adaptation from Kenneth Branagh, they are also less than half of the $28.6 million opening earned in 2018 by its predecessor, “Murder on the Orient Express.”
Tracking was so low for the murder mystery because “Orient Express” had an opening weekend audience that was heavily skewed towards audiences over the age of 50; an age demographic that has shown up far less often since the pandemic began, not to mention the usual slowdown in theater turnout that comes on Super Bowl weekend.
Reception for “Nile” has been somewhat positive with a 66% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B on CinemaScore. But with a reported $90 million production budget, its...

Just as President Biden’s top medical adviser Anthony Fauci is declaring that the U.S. is exiting “the full-blown pandemic phase” of Covid-19, three studios are hoping to lure out adult audiences, especially women who’ve been slow to return to cinemas.
Further curbing Sunday business is the Super Bowl, but if older moviegoers are determined to head to the cinema this weekend, they’ll go Friday Saturday as they’ve shown during previous big game frames.
MGM/Uar’s Thanksgiving title House of Gucci remains the top opening and movie during the pandemic for an older-adult-skewing title, with a $14.4 million three-day opening and a $53.5M running stateside tally. That Ridley Scott-directed movie, which was snubbed for all but one Oscar nom yesterday, pulled in 45% 18-34s and 34% over 45s in its first five days.

Since “Taken” in 2008, Liam Neeson has starred in so many movies where he plays a character who protects, rescues, mourns, or avenges his family that it seems somewhat pointless to invest deeply enough in the latest to care whether it’s better than its predecessors, much less if it’s individually good or bad.
Directed, produced, and cowritten by Mark Williams (Neeson’s 2020 film “Honest Thief”), “Blacklight” is an unsurprisingly tepid action thriller which extends this odd phase of Neeson’s career, but the best thing that can probably be said about it is that it’s not materially worse than most of the others.
Williams coaches Neeson through another of the actor’s increasingly familiar gruff-but-sensitive performances while telling the story of the kind of black-bag man whose simultaneous political obsolescence and extrajudicial necessity movies like this too frequently want to explore without possessing the narrative or intellectual sophistication...

When Saudi Arabia announced it was opening movie theaters for the first time in 35 years back in late 2017, there was excitement from international exhibitors and Hollywood studios who saw a fertile new market of opportunity. Importantly, 70% of the Kingdom’s 34M population is under 30 and has money to spend.
And spend they have, with impressive box office progression. From April 2018 through late December this year, grosses reached over $454M, per comScore[/link]. Even with the Covid shutdown in 2020, that year saw a 26% increase on 2019. This year so far is already 85% bigger than last at about $230M. Saudi currently ranks as the No. 14 global market (although that comes with an asterisk given Covid impact elsewhere).
Says one international distribution exec of Saudi’s potential, “It’s going to be really important. It’s going to be a billion-dollar market.” High ticket prices (about $16-$18 each) will also help push it ahead.

Says one international distribution exec of Saudi’s potential, “It’s going to be really important. It’s going to be a billion-dollar market.” High ticket prices (about $16-$18 each) will also help push it ahead.

A little while back I read an interview with Liam Neeson basically saying that after a solid few years of churning out action flick after flick, that were basic carbon copies of Taken, he was taking time away from the genre. I was pretty happy to see this because, while it was always good to see Neeson being cast in films, they were all just becoming really, really, similar and it sounded like he wanted to flex his acting chops properly again.
Cut to now and we have Honest Thief. The poster is your typical Neeson Taken knock-off poster; the trailer is your typical Neeson knock-off trailer; and the cast didn’t exactly fill me full of hope – with the likes of Jai Courtney in the mix. But wait,...
