As far as the previous fifteen episodes, of Season 1 and 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' in general, go, all but two are very good to outstanding. "Dragonshy", "Winter Wrap Up", "Fall Weather Friends" and "Suited for Success" being my favourites. The two exceptions, but neither in my view are bad episodes (just disappointing by the season's standards), being "Boast Busters" and the previous one "Feeling Pinkie Keen".
"Sonic Rainboom" is my favourite up to this point of the show and one of the high-points of the first season. After being let down by "Feeling Pinkie Keen", while reiterating again not hating it, part of me was worried as to whether the show would get better or not while not at all losing hope. Luckily, 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' redeems itself and between that episode and this one the improvement is massive, namely down to it being one of the season's, and show's, most relatable and not having to worry about primarily a confused message like before.
The story was a great one already just reading and hearing the premise alone. One of the season's most inventive and one of the few to make my eyes well up thinking about it (no am being serious here). The execution does not disappoint, actually consider it even better. Found myself completely identifying with Rainbow Dash here, being somebody who was bullied myself and have had a lot of self-doubt, confidence issues and insecurities during school and since. The story is one where it was so easy to root for her success and overcoming her adversity, have struggled with that my whole life so "Sonic Rainboom" resonated with me on a personal and emotional level.
It was not just personal and poignant, but also very entertaining (have always loved the friendship and relationships between the ponies, essential for the show's success and one of its main strengths, and Pinkie Pie is always amusing) and heart-warming. The ending is explosive and warms the heart, with yet another relevant and worth talking about moral not handled in a preachy way while making its point. And an outcome that makes one want to cheer.
Rainbow Dash, as said, is so easy to relate to and it is good to not see anybody handled one-dimensionally. The friendship theme is beautifully brought out as well. The animation is colourful and elegant as ever and the music fits without problem throughout tonally and in placement. There is a perfect balance of humour and pathos, both done brilliantly individually. Hilariously in the former and poignant in the latter and the episode excels in not going over people's heads while not dumbing down at the same time. Ashleigh Ball is particularly good when it comes to the voice acting, which again is without fault.
Overall, brilliant. 10/10
