  Tom Branson : [laughs]  Kill the general? I was not.

  Anna Smith : [takes the lid off the soup and gets a whiff]  Eurgh!

  Tom Branson : I was going to throw that lot all over him.

  Anna Smith : What is it?

  Tom Branson : Oil and ink and a bit of a cowpat, all mixed with sour milk. He'd have needed a bath right enough, but not a coffin.

• Ethel Parks : Major Bryant wants me to go to the pictures in York with him, when he's allowed out. But you'll say that's stupid.

  Anna Smith : Not stupid. Insane.

  Ethel Parks : Oh, he really likes me, though. He says he wants to get to know me better.

  Anna Smith : Has he told you how he's planning to achieve it?

  Ethel Parks : Spoilsport.
