A Waste of Time

Where to begin? UNDERBELLY BLUES fails in almost every department. Despite the fact that it is completely unoriginal and boring, the lighting is bad (everyone's faces are constantly in the shadows, and not in a good way), the framing is bad, and the music is poorly-selected stock music that we've already heard in a thousand YouTube videos. This actually LOOKS like a bad YouTube video that your little cousin made with his friends. Except it drags on for an hour and a half.

It's a cheap rip-off of films like PULP FICTION, even marketed as such (Tarantino's father had something to do with this production), though the two are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of quality and overall watchability. This is a great example of exactly everything that can go wrong despite your best attempts at mimicking your favorite films. The screenplay is bad, but it is sadly the best thing about this. The acting is bad and over-the-top, the characters and costumes are even worse, and the dialog is absolutely horrible. They could have just made a regular bad, boring movie, but instead they put on fake mustaches and overacted with bad accents and made something truly horrendous. Apparently costing $200,000 to make, it is clear that none of that went to hiring an experienced, qualified, or competent cast or crew. Nor did any of it go to purchasing or renting decent equipment, as it looks like they shot this thing on the worst camera they could find. No excuse for that if you ask me, since decent cameras are cheap and easy to come by these days. And the one halfway decent actor in it with any skill whatsoever had his performance ruined by a bad fake mustache and ugly hat that he wore throughout.

I'm conflicted, because this makes me never want to watch a movie again but also makes me want to watch anything else to help me forget it. If I have to say something nice, I will say that the editing is at least halfway decent (not the WORST I've ever seen) and there were at least a couple genuinely funny moments, although those were few and far between. The writer should have gotten mad at the director for ruining his script, except for that the writer WAS the director, so he has no one to be mad at bus himself. Steer clear of this one at all costs. Do not recommend.
