"HBO's" "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty" returns with a fast break and slam dunk! As the season 2 premiere episode "One Ring Don't Make a Dynasty" was one entertaining and drama filled episode. The series picks up in 1980 just after the Lakers have won an "NBA" title and team owner Jerry Buss is working behind the scenes and rolling the dice with player contracts, as he's locking up many players to long term money deals before they become free agents so he can keep the structure together. Also along the way Buss( the good and fun John C. Reilly) bonds and makes the team a family business as he gets his children in on the business including daughter Jeanie. Plus this episode still shows the ego clashes and interpersonal drama felt between Magic(Quincy Isaiah) and Kareem. As the new season is under way the team is dealt somewhat of a blow when Magic has an injury when he tears his knee up, still Johnson himself also is dealing with personal matters too. As the episode showcases Johnson's playboy like ways. Overall good well done episode that tips off season 2 just fine as it sets up the series for another fine fast paced joy that highlights one of the greatest basketball franchises, while seeing the superstar rival between Bird and Magic and the Celtics and Lakers is a treat to watch.
