May Day in Padstow
richardchatten5 November 2022
Colour had been an occasional component of documentaries since at least as long as sound when director Alan Lomax visited North Cornwall with a Bolex and a consignment of Kodachrome stock to record on behalf of the English Folk Dance and Song Society the local's "sexy, savage springtime rite" performed annually on the streets of the town of Padstow; anticipating by twenty years similar activities depicted in 'The Wicker Man.

The appearance by the locals in a brief sequence in the local pub in black & white creates a vaguely avant garde impression that anticipates 'Un Homme et Une Femme' and 'If....', which as in the later films was dictated merely by the unavailability at that precise moment of colour stock.
