A Conventional but Good Episode
claudio_carvalho25 March 2017
Olivia is summoned by Broyles that informs that The Fringe Division in the parallel universe has requested their support to hunt the serial- killer John McClennan (John Pyper-Ferguson). Olivia invites the John McClennan in our universe, who is a professor specialist in serial- killers, to go with her to the parallel universe omitting their destination. When john investigate his house in the parallel universe, he does not understand the coincidences and soon he learns that he in a parallel universe. He discloses that he might have been also a serial- killer if he had never met a woman called Marjorie, who took him from the dark side with her love. When he goes to the bathroom, he flees from the Fringe Division looking for his double to teach him love. What will happen to John McClennan?

"One Night in October" is a conventional but good episode of "Fringe". The "Olivias" seem to be respecting the other one much more. The conclusion with Walter hearing Peter asking for help is promising. My vote is eight.

I'm Still Trying to Figure Things Out
Hitchcoc12 November 2023
We have another brain sucker case. The two Olivias are forced into working together to get a serial killer who is drilling holes in people's heads. They figure if they find his twin on the other side, it will lead to his location and capture. It turns out that both men have similar knowledge but took separate roads. This one seems rather silly because the whole business with drilling heads. Also, the childishness of the two women when it comes to the case. They are like a couple of seventh graders. Walter is acting even more bizarre than usual. Is he going to at some point start to be a force. And what is haunting him? Is it Peter?

Season 4 plays one of its trump cards, surreal Twin Olivias, award-winning guest star and masterful strange writing
igoatabase1 October 2011
Wow ! It's what you will keep saying all along because this second episode was nothing like the first and more reminiscent of… The freaking third season ! Remember its innovative red and blue format ? Well the writers on this show are so talented that they managed to enrich their winning formula with a new parameter. You better pay attention because it's a televisual experience that pushed the science-fiction barrier in a new direction. This time there were far much more interactions between Prime Olivia and Alternate Olivia. Again I couldn't help comparing the visual effects and editing to Ringer. It's definitely the last time I will because they don't play in the same league. The execution is so flawless and bold that you just forget that what you see… is impossible ! It's as mind blowing and puzzling as an optical illusion expect Anna Torv is far much more charming than M. C. Escher's work. Moreover her performance as Bolivia is delightful and beside a different persona she also injected some comic relief to the serious and fascinating topics covered during the investigation. As for the guest we had none other than John Pyper-Ferguson who had already impressed me as Tomas Vergis on Caprica. Defining his character as ambivalent is inexact but it's the closest term that can be found in the dictionary of our world. The actor's performance and dual writing are both award-winning. It was a contemporary take at Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Fringe style. They drilled a hole in Stevenson's brain, extracted the neurons that allowed him to write his wicked masterpiece and injected the genius substance to produce One Night in October. September, 30th 2011 ? The day the audience orbited its jaw around its TV. Still there were a few elements that deserved to be questioned. First the risky game played by both sides is what made this episode so excellent but even if Olivia warned Phillip Broyles about it multiple times I'm surprised they still haven't learned their lesson. Haven't they heard about the butterfly effect ? Second the "Where is Peter ?" game is far too anecdotic to be entertaining and the ending was predictable. In fact considering how well written the rest was I'm surprised they made such an easy mistake. Third… plot holes ? If Peter never existed, there shouldn't be a portal between the two universes. I read reviews and comments pointing them out but I don't think there're plot holes. The whole point of season 4 should be to explain why there's still amber in the other side for instance. Moreover we have to consider that in the pilot the Observers mentioned Peter was leaking. To sum things up, these are just captivating topics and very intriguing questions to talk about. Stay tuned Lost fans, the answers aren't coming.

Now Tell me your Most Happy Memory.

...Step into the Light

If "The Proof of the Butterscotch Pudding is in the Eating" then the proof of any Fringe Case is in the viewing of it. In this second Peter-less Case, although I am still wondering where the Observers have spirited Peter off to - If in fact it was they who did It... I am certainly as interested in this New Case - Mostly because of the unique investigation element added - And also in the characteristics of the of Fringe event that is being looked into.

The point is, my interest is officially Piqued, I now want to now how this all plays out. We know that Peter is still poking his head into existence (and in new ways) - But as important as that is, we have a new conundrum to figure out.

Fringe division, on both sides of the orange universe, continues to look into odd events, apparently not bothered by what we know of a missing key team member... All except Walter maybe, who is bothered - If he could only know what he is being bothered about. Can he figure it out? At this point I don't know and that is what makes it interesting.

The idea of not knowing what's around any corners, combined with the fact all of us must eventually look, is what makes this intriguing, if you add in foreknowledge of how certain events played out with the addition of another character. And this episode shows us more of the differences between the "Red" and "Blue" Fringe Multiverses (becoming in fact the "orange" universe) and timelines of each- Searching deeper into Olivia's (And maybe Fauxlivia's) past.

In fact, in the short interaction between Olivia and Faulivia where they are briefly alone together, Olivia tells some thing about her past relating to her Stepfather to Fauxlivua- and the reaction that we see from Fauxlivua is probably the first time we see respect from Faux-livia directed at O-livia. This is a major development and it is not to be missed. Look for it.

In fact these first four episodes without Peter are very important, as it shows Walter coming to grips with his instability and figuring out ways to step out of the little world he has trapped himself into, in the laboratory. He finally, eventually, takes steps to leave that protected environment. But it requires watching the progression from the first episode to the fourth- it is mostly his abject fear of being sent back to St Claire's- "The hospital where he spent 17...", well, you know what Walter says about this..

My most happy memory is when I learned earlier this year that there would be 22 more Fringe "cases" this season.

It also makes me happy that I can revisit these episodes on IMDb TV.

Boring and confusing alike
VinceGambini19 August 2019
New writers? Have to check that because this was one of the worst episodes of my otherwise fav show. The plot just didn't fly with the two Olivias side by side and I just wouldn't get interested. The question that popped up in my mind constantly was why should I care? Yes, okay, the timeline was rewritten by the observers but there's a limit to how much crazed stuff the viewer can accept. Just hope they bring Peter back. His common sense is missing.

Warning: Spoilers
Back at office after sane John disappears Fauxlivia is back in tough girl costume including red hair. In this crisis, does she really have time for that?

Dead Broyles is back. How then did Olivia escape? Earlier she acknowdges previous identity swich. Why was she on other side if there was no Peter to recue? Lots of confusing things to explain.

Did they forget Broyles is dead?
averymartin-447926 September 2023
I don't understand how they can forget one of their characters are dead. Don't get me wrong, I have loved the show. But when you reintroduce a character without any explanation it really bugs me that you couldn't have cared enough to fact check your own show. Other universe Broyles was kill by Walternate and his body was sent back to the original universe when alternate Olivia went back to her universe.

This was a huge plot point in a previous episode because it showed that Broyles, even in his "evil" alternate self, cared a whole lot about others and Olivia. And would do anything in order to do what he thought was right. Which is the same character trait he has in the original universe.

Writers, don't get sloppy. Please fact check yourself. If you are going to write like that, check yourself out of a carrier. If you want to bring him back great, explain it.
