Bewitched in the War of the Roses
claudio_carvalho16 January 2013
Dean and Sam read about two bizarre death cases in Prosperity, Indiana, and they head to the town to investigate. They try to find something common in the cases when the owner of a construction company in murdered by a nail gun that had operated without available power.

The Winchester brothers discover that the three victims were working in the project of a mall with the investor Don Stark. They visit the businessman and find that his wife Maggie has separated from him believing that he has a love affair with his secretary. Further, they disclose that Maggie is a powerful witch and Don is an also powerful warlock. Meanwhile a leviathan is hunting down the Winchester brothers and waiting for them in their hotel room.

"Shut Up, Dr. Phil" is a highly entertaining episode of Supernatural, with a story of witchcraft. It is great to see James "Spike" Marsters and Charisma "Cordelia" Carpenter from Buffy and Angel again after a long period, and the references to "Bewitched" and "The War of the Roses". My vote is eight.

The War of the Roses.
zombiehigh1831 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I never was a Buffy fan but I was crazy about Angel, so to have Cordelia and Spike together again on a show, that was a welcome touch. Now more than ever Supernatural needs to lighten up the tone of events and The War of the Roses theme was a very nice change. James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter still share the same great spark and I'm glad as a fan for not killing them off at the end. That brings me to why so many fans complained about that fact, In my Humble opinion this episode could have worked better had it been earlier on the show and not after that Amy dilemma. The Winchesters have let some Villains go before (Does Patrick ring a bell anyone) so it is not the first time and the two witches here have proved themselves to be very powerful, so they are not that easy to kill. Needless to say that Don had saved them twice, OK I know the same happened with Amy who saved Sam's life before but let's not forget three main things: 1- Amy might have not been Dean's smartest move, the guy has been beating himself up about it for weeks now. 2- There are more urgent things at hand for the boys now that they have captured a Levaithan and had to put him somewhere safe before the spell wears off. 3- I know it's a very long shot, But I'm daring to dream they might use Don's help in the future fight off the ancient creatures, so just wait and see.

Cut to the Winchester boys:

1- Why did Sam now more than ever worry about Dean's drinking habits since it wasn't an issue before? But Dean's drinking problems surfaced up on season four after his trip to Hell, so drinking was his way of dealing with nasty stuff and Sam could understand that, but now for someone who is stuck 24/7 with his elder brother, Sam can't put his hand on why exactly Dean is retreating to drinking again, Moreover Dean has also been experiencing frequent endless nightmares, plus his surfaced guilt issues last episode.

2- Dean's little experience with Osiris last episode clearly didn't help much and the guy is still having trouble dealing with his guilt towards everything starting from Sam's mental state, to Cas, to having to hide out the truth about Amy from Sam.

3- So frequent do I see fans complaining about the boys' heart to heart talks beside the Impala, so allow me to say please stop complaining about them. The two had gone to Hell and back, they have lost their support system and have no body else in the world but each other (Yeah, well there is Bobby also, but I have to say he is not the poster boy of mental health) So they have to deal with their problems the way they usually do. Sam wants to talk and let out his feelings, While Dean is hiding his feelings deep down under. For some reason I don't see them talking to a shrink about their problems, simply because we know what would happen then (Recall "Sam interrupted" any one?). Besides those heart to hearts are one of the reasons most fans are in love with the show, without them they would be two soulless robots fighting evil things and that would be so boring.

All in All this was a nice episode, I loved the showdown between the boys and the Starks, with the Starks toying with the brothers, tossing them around the room like play things. Jensen and Jared have always had good comic timing and both are great with physical comedy. I also missed the Supernatural creative gory deaths, Talk about head fried in one of those beehive dryers, a guy pinned in an out house with a nail gun, a head sliced clean with a tray (I was utterly happy when Maggie's annoying friend got her head chopped off) and the unforgettable hearts in the Cupcakes (and this was another reason why I never eat Cupcakes)

Too cute
CubsandCulture16 April 2020
One of the standing issues of Season 7 (and onward) is the tone and style of the show started to slip on the writers a bit as they tried to expand the show in different directions. This episode is a good example of ton getting away from them. This is not a horror, or horror-comedy. It is farce with a thin veneer of gore. It is largely fun and funny-hey Spike is in it-but it is a overly cute episode with several gags that don't land. It is lacking the edge the show use to have.

Spike/Cordie reunion
conraddalton3914 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode as it reunited two of my favorite alums from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter, who possess perfect comedic/dramatic timing. These two do what they do best, and create tongue-in-cheek, memorable characters that we love to watch.

It says a lot about the team behind Supernatural, when they give such a substantial amount of screen time to the two. The director also assured they were given sufficient takes, providing the cutter with good material to work with.

As a husband/wife team of long-lived witches, with marital infidelity issues, and really, what's a little supernatural murder between spouses, these two walked that fine line between too much comedy and parody. A balancing act they perform to perfection. As for Dean and Sam, the Winchester brothers prove again how much they care for Supernatural. They are host with the grace to assure their guest are treated like welcome family.

All in all, one of my favorite episodes. I hope to see more of these two soon.

I loved seeing two members of the Buffy cast in this episode, totally works <3 Fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer should watch this episode even if they're not big fans of Supernatural (feels like the best of both worlds though :)

Warning: Spoilers
After years of not watching Buffy & the Scooby gang I fell in love with Spike all over again.Strange though, hearing his natural American accent,he suits the English accent he had in BTVS much better. What a fantastic surprise to see him & Cordelia in this episode.Felt like a teenager all over again! Brilliant seeing Charisma(Cordelia) too.

Supernatural meets War of the Roses
mm-3928 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural episode of Shut Up, Dr. Phi is a twist of Supernatural meets War of the Roses. Dean even alludes to the movie War of the Roses. Dr Phil episode is inspired by the movie War of the Roses which is about a couple that has a violent and ugly divorce. The boys can only save themselves from the witches who have marital problems by being marriage counsellors. One of the monsters which tried to kill the Winchesters is hurt by the guy witch who tells the boy to leave town for his wife has it in for them. Not a bad episode, but not good either. This episode is the Supernatural series attempt at humour. I give this episode a six out of ten.

Cute and funny, but not offering anything else
saphira-284547 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's a mostly comedic witches episode that it's enjoyable, especially towards the end, but doesn't feel at home in this show. Could have been a great filler episode with some tweaking, but it's just slightly above average.

And this might be a nitpick to some, but if you're going to use witches from another country, do more research and effort than just translating a generic sentence ("The power of black magic condemns you to suffering and death"? Really? Was that all they could come up with as an incantation?) and then having actors who clearly never heard that language read it in a really forced and botched way. It's not the first time the show doesn't research the culture that it's using, just the one time it used my own culture so I knew how much they messed up.

Nostalgic for Buffy
bogdan2538 January 2023
Spike and Cornelia are married witches in this episode and to my surprise manage to bring the same fun to Supernatural as they did to Buffy. Story is nothing spectacular, but it's tight and fun. Episodes like this shine in these dark seasons.

I also want to take this chance to apologise for my friend CataTheDon, which reacted badly to his lack of knowledge on his language. Actually, the oldest dated text in Romanian is from 1521, Neacsu's letter written in Cyrillic letters because the language had been influenced by Slavs. Only in 1860 did the we start to officially use the latin-based alphabet through a decree by ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza.

These witches once mention they've been together for 800 years, so it's realistic they would use Cyrillic Romanian.

Good episode.

You dumbasses, you shoulve done some research, cyrillic script is not roumanian, its Slavic, Turkic, Mongolic, Uralic, Caucasian and Iranic across Europe and Asia. Stop badmouthing roumanians !! It looks like you always feel the need to badmouth roumanians !!

Seriously why?
Meeraah11 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is my first time watching the show, and I really like it so far.

The issue that triggered me to write this review is the complete contrast between events and decisions of characters, like Dean killed Amy two episodes ago cause he couldn't let her live knowing she'll kill again and he had to kill her.

Ok I get that, then he lets those two witches who killed how many person, just live and kisses them goodbye? Seriously? They have been alive for 900 years and god knows how many people have they killed this whole time and Dean didn't get the tingle of righteousness to HAVING to kill them just like he did with Amy?

It just bugged me that I couldn't keep it to myself.

That being let off my chest, I'll continue watching cause I'm already hooked praying they won't make stupid unnecessary decisions again.
