Nickelodeon and Disney might come to mind when you think of great kids shows. After all, both networks have been producing programming for kids for decades.
Despite that fact, both companies have been under fire in recent years, particularly Nickelodeon, following the release of the Quiet on Set documentary.
Here is the perfect list if you want to expose your kids to some great shows that are not associated with either company.
Hanna-Barbera Classics (Various)
The Hanna-Barbera cartoons are classics that kids and adults of all ages can enjoy together. Many of them are geared toward children but include jokes to amuse adults.
Founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in the late 1950s, Hanna-Barbera Productions produced 249 cartoon series between the 1950s and 1980s. Many of those have since become beloved classics.
A personal favorite of mine is Scooby Doo, and many fans share my love for the crime-solving dog and his Mystery Inc.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.
Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.
Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.
We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

When /Film published the massive 2023 Holiday Gift Guide last year, we highlighted an incredibly cool custom sneaker shop delivering amazing kicks with designs inspired by your favorite movies and TV shows. From "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to "RoboCop" and even "Captain Planet," the sneaker kings at Bull Airs have been churning out some outstanding custom creations. But their latest offering just might be the best.
Inspired by "Back to the Future Part II" (but not official merchandise), Bull Airs is releasing their own custom Nike Air Mag sneakers that take a cue from the self-lacing shoes that appear in the time traveling sequel. No, they don't self-lace, but they look just like the shoes seen in the movie, albeit with a little bit of a Bull Airs touch. But that's not all; they also have a pair of shoes based on Doc Brown's vibrant, futuristic fashion, as well as a...

Watching Reyna Tropical evolve over the years felt like watching two best friends, connected almost in a psychic way through their deeply personal lyrics and love for their heritage. They have embodied the word tropical to its very core, with breezy beats, upbeat guitar riffs, and psychedelic electro-cumbia sounds.
For years, the duo was made up of Mexican expats Fabi Reyna and Nectali Díaz, known as Sumo. Reyna is the founder of She Shreds Media (formerly She Shreds Magazine) and has performed and provided backing vocals and guitar for acts...

In the 1980s and early 1990s, cartoons often featured positive moral lessons in a PSA style, like the "knowing is half the battle" segments of "G.I. Joe" or the "Sailor Says" endings of "Sailor Moon." Many of these additions were due to the passing of the "Children's Television Act" in 1991, legalizing what so many shows had already been doing -- serving the "educational and informational" needs of children. A lot of times, these PSA announcements had something to do with the episode that just played, but sometimes they, like "Sonic Sez" on "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog," had absolutely nothing to do with the cartoon ... like that time Sonic gave a PSA on sexual harassment. (I'm dead serious.)
Then there was "Captain Planet and the Planeteers," an environmentalist superhero series from Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner that took the...

Billy Joel has apparently been waiting for someone to come along and update his 1989 single “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” In an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball following his headlining performance in Hyde Park last weekend, Joel praised Fall Out Boy for their recent take on the song.
“Everybody’s been wanting to know when there’s going to be an updated version of it, because my song started in ’49 and ended in ’89 — it was a 40-year span,” Joel told Ball. “Everybody said, ‘Well, aren’t...

In 1989, Billy Joel released his eleventh album Storm Front which featured his third single that would reach number one on the Billboard Top 100 charts, We Didn’t Start the Fire. We Didn’t Start the Fire was a unique tune in which the lyrics were composed entirely of a laundry list of subjects that dominated news headlines spanning from 1949 to 1989 (which was also Billy Joel’s lifetime at that point). The pop culture hit would address topics such as Beatlemania, the Berlin wall, the Ayatollah, Ho Chi Minh, Catcher in the Rye, The King and I, the crack epidemic and much more.
The song would spawn parodies for use in movies and TV, but there hasn’t been a genuine updated cover until now. The band Fall Out Boy has just released their version with headlines from the last thirty years filling out the lyrics. This single will reportedly be...

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Episode 14: Nip/Stuck
Everything about "Nip/Stuck" was down the middle Legends of Tomorrow fun. A bottle episode that shows character growth, some workplace comedy, light time travel nonsense, Matt Ryan in a terrible wig. Power Rangers Beast Morphers Episode 3
The streak of conservatism in Power Rangers is finally at its end. We have a whole episode centered on (literally) green energy, protecting the forests, and even getting exercise! It’s a welcome change from Super Ninja Steel, which seemed to push the message that if you didn’t conform to societal norms you’d be punished. It was such an odd run of anti progressive episodes for Power Rangers, a franchise that at its very DNA was always trying to be progressive.
‘End of the Road’ returns to that level of progressiveness, with Zoey stopping the mayor from building a highway through the forest and leaving all the animals without a home. It also touches on clean energy,...

Charles Murray has been hired to adapt the bestselling book “Truevine” by Beth Macy for Paramount Pictures, sources tell Variety.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davidson’s Appian Way banner is producing.
“Truevine” is the true story of George and Willie Muse, black Albino brothers bearing golden dreadlocks who, in 1899, at the ages of 9 and 6, were considered “genetic anomalies” yet visually ideal when spied by James “Candy” Shelton, a white bounty hunter scouring the area for “freaks” to enslave in a circus sideshow.
Murray is currently under an overall deal at Marvel Studios for television and has worked with the studio on shows including Netflix’s “Luke Cage,” on which he also serves as an exec producer, and “Inhumans.”
Additionally, he is writing “Micheaux: The Great and Only” for HBO films and Zadan and Meron Productions. Previously, Murray worked on “Sons of Anarchy,” “Criminal Minds,” “Roots,” “The Bastard Executioner,” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Scientists have been widely acknowledging climate change as a real and pressing danger to our planet for a while now, but it seems pretty clear that none of us are actually going to do anything about it as long as we’ve got all-day breakfast at McDonald’s and another decade of Marvel movies to look forward to. Thankfully, we’ve got celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio to watch out for us. Not only is he producing a Captain Planet movie, but he and Fisher Stevens also made a climate change documentary called Before The Flood that was screened at President Obama’s South By South Lawn festival earlier this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce and star in a movie about the legendary rock and roll producer Sam Phillips, who ran a little recording studio in Memphis called Sun Studio. That studio caught the earliest blends of rhythm and blues and country music that artists like Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were cooking. It was also the studio where a young Elvis Presley plunked down some cash to record a song for his mother’s birthday.

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was one of my favorite cartoons growing up in the early 1990s. While it also gave me cool interpersonal “drama” such as Wheeler and Linka’s on-again, off-again relationship and the surprise of realizing Kwame was voiced by LeVar Burton, it also taught me about recycling and keeping the planet clean. So, imagine my surprise when I found out The Hollywood Reporter has stated that a “Captain Planet” film is on the works! The longer I think about Captain Planet, the cartoon from the early 1990′s, the more it would make sense today. The environment is still an important issue and the Planeteers with their magic rings could actually be pretty cool redone in today’s technology. That could possibly be the plan for a movie, Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
“By our powers combined…” Sony is in final talks to get the rights to the franchise for adaptation, according to THR, to be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.
The question remains. Will Captain Planet retain his green mullet? Only time will tell. “The Power Is Yours!”

For some reason Hollywood is still trying to get a big screen live-action adaptation of Captain Planet off the ground. The last we heard, Cartoon Network had teamed up with Angry Filmworks and Transformers producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford to develop it. Now according to THR, Sony Pictures is going to pick up the rights and move the project forward.
The movie is based on the terrible 1990s animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers. I wasn't a fan of the series growing up--whenever it came on I changed the channel. I never had any interest in Captain Planet, and I still don't. There's nothing interesting about it, and I can't see how they can effectively adapt it into a film unless they develop it as a parody.
The original series follows five teens from around the world including North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America.

Fondly-remembered and rarely-rewatched early-’90s cheesefest Captain Planet and the Planeteers will be adapted into a hilariously expensive franchise-baiting blockbuster film, if Hollywood has its way. EW has confirmed the news, initially reported by the Hollywood Reporter, that Sony is working on a film version of the cartoon, which starred five kids with magic elemental powers, a monkey, and a superhero whose only weakness was garbage. Mark Gordon, Don Murphy, and Susan Montford are slated as producers on the film — Montford and Murphy previously had a deal to turn Planet into a Cartoon Network movie, before Cartoon Network adopted a...

Last we heard on the “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” live-action movie front, Cartoon Network was working on one with producer Don Murphy (of “Transformers” fame). But that was back in 2011, and nothing seems to have come out of that. It’s 2013, and Sony is now trying to acquire the film rights to the 1990s animated TV property, with an eye towards turning it into a live-action film. Murphy is still involved, but Cartoon Network has dropped out. “Captain Planet and the Planeteers”, of course, is the scintillating story of five teens from different parts of the world who are given power rings by Gaia, the uh, earth spirit, “in order to protect the planet from the devastation of polluters.” The tykes can combine their powers to form the titular Captain Planet, a blue-ish tinted guy with green hair and groovy powers. As you can see from the pic above...

Sony is close to securing the rights to make a Captain Planet movie because why the hell not? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Gordon (2012), Don Murphy (Transformers) and Susan Montford (Splice) will be producing the adaptation of the nostalgia-stuffed 90s television show where teenagers imbued with special powers via Gaia-given rings tried to shut down polluters. Which, now that I think about it, Captain Planet wasn’t a huge presence on the program. He was more of a Day Glo Blue Ex Machina that descended whenever the kids failed (every episode). But regardless of how much he’s featured in the movie version, I think we can all agree on who should play him.

The original show featured five young characters from across the globe who are empowered with magical rings by the Earth mother Gaia to protect the world.

The cast of villains and supporting characters attracted some high-profile voice actors including Sting, Tim Curry, Jeff Goldblum, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Elizabeth Taylor, Mark Hamill, Dionne Warwick and Kate Mulgrew.
Whoopi Goldberg voiced Gaia before being replaced by Margot Kidder.
A movie adaptation was attempted in the 1990s, but never progressed past the script stage.

Sony Pictures is negotiating to acquire the rights to the 1990s TV series "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" in order to turn the property into a live-action film to be produced by Mark Gordon (2012), Don Murphy (Transformers) and Susan Montford (Real Steel). In an effort to inform younger viewers about serious environmental issues, Turner Broadcasting partnered with Dic Enterprises in 1990 to create the world's first animated environmental series, "Captain Planet and the Planeteers." The series was about a group of young people (The Planeteers) who combine their special powers to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world's worst eco-villains. While a writer, director or any cast members have yet to be hired, I'm sure many are hoping that Don Cheadle will be considered for the main role. Don Cheadle is Captain Planet:...

Screenwriters the world over must've stopped generating new ideas because there is a big-screen adaptation of "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" in the works.
THR reports that Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up the rights to the 1990s environmental cartoon for an adaptation by producers Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy), Don Murphy ("The Transformers") and Susan Montford.
"Captain Planet" told the story of five teens, each from a different continent (North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America), who'd been given powers by Gaia, the earth spirit, in order to protect the planet from polluters. When they weren't strong enough, their powers combined to summon the one and only Captain Planet. (You remember the chant: "Earth! Wind! Water!...")
It's too bad Gordon, Murphy and Montford's powers couldn't combine to create an original movie.
Are you looking forward to a "Captain Planet" movie or has Hollywood finally hit...

Sony just went there. The classic 1990s animated series Captain Planet And The Planeteers is coming to the big screen, with Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford producing the project.
It’s a silly show, but also brilliant, and pretty timely, given the environmental bent of the show. The five teenagers, all with diverse international backgrounds, receive powers from Gaia, and fend off pollution, literally. If their powers aren’t enough, their powers Combine to become Captain Planet! Hooray. It’s a superhero movie, it’s a known property with the whiff of nostalgia, it appeals to a global crowd, and it’s taking on hot button environmental issues. It’s a slam dunk (and could also be really, truly, awfully bad). Not sure why it took so long for this to happen.

By Sony's powers combined, the Captain Planet movie appears to be closer to becoming a reality. We've actually known for a couple of years that there was a chance the cartoon superhero and his five environmentally-conscious teen "Planeteers" would be headed toward the big screen at some point in the future, courtesy of a man who knows a thing or two about adapting a beloved cartoon to a feature film, Transformers producer Don Murphy. Today comes word that Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire the rights to the adaptation, which - according to THR - would be produced by Murphy, along with Mark Gordon and Susan Montford. Captain Planet and the Planeteers aired for more than a hundred episodes from 1990 through 1996, and centered on a group of teens from different parts of the world, and each of whom was given a magic ring from Gaia, the spirit of...

More below! Here's the original credits sequence from the cartoon series that aired in the 90s: In tune with the show's theme of environmentalism, the young eco-warriors used rings that harnessed the powers of wind, water, fire, Earth and heart to call upon the titular hero. Live-action adaptation have been attempted in the past, but none of them managed to get further than the script stage. With a modern day reimagining, Sony are clearly hoping to develop a new franchise from the 90s animated series. Shortly after word came last July that Cartoon Network and Transformers franchise producer Don Murphy and his Angry Filmworks production banner had announced development of a live-action feature film adaptation of the environmentally sound 90's cartoon series Captain Planet, the folks at Funny or Die took a stab at it with Don Cheadle as the green mulleted environmentalist hero. But now a more serious take on the hero has surfaced in the form of a fanmade trailer for a film that sees the Planeteers forced to call upon Captain Planet after ten years of being estranged. There are some great moments here, so watch it! Here's Jay Diaz's trailer for a live-action Captain Planet movie via ScreenRant: While it's not a mind-blowing piece of work, there are some phenomenal trailer moments, especially once the Planeteers combine their powers to summon Captain Planet. Captain Planet isn't the most well-known hero, but he apparently has a fan in "Iron Man 2" actor Don Cheadle.
In a new skit posted on FunnyOrDie, Cheadle takes on the mantle of the early 1990s superhero who fought environmental injustice with the help of a group of multiculutural kids and the ambiguously defined powers of earth, fire, wind, water, and heart. Of course, in this version of Captain Planet, the superhero gets a little carried away with his mission to rescue a forest from evil loggers.
Yes, that's right: that was the guy who played a walking weapon of mass destruction called "War Machine" taking a turn as "Captain Planet," the mullet-headed protector of Mother Earth.
You win this round, FunnyOrDie team.
Still, as ridiculous as this skit is, it's worth noting that just last month it was announced that Cartoon Network was developing a live-action movie based on the "Captain Planet" animated series.

Last month it was announced that "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Real Steel" producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford had inked a contract with Cartoon Network to develop a live action movie of the animated cartoon, "Captain Planet." Now, if you ever happened to be babysitting a four- to eight-year-old during its early '90s run, you're aware that "Captain Planet" was irony-free and/or perhaps earnest in a way that no longer exists in children's cartoons. Even in the early '90s before slacker culture had set in, "Captain Planet" was the fey, milquetoast hero of children's cartoons especially in comparison…...

Originally appearing in an animated series in the early '90s called Captain Planet and the Planeteers, the show revolved around five teens from around the globe who were each given a ring that contains the power to control an element of nature.
