The Baby Driver actor, Edgar Wright, is somewhat of a film critic in his downtime on social media. A few days back, he shared his thoughts on Challengers, and now it’s Furiosa’s turn. Having had the opportunity to watch the film beforehand, it seems he had an absolute blast.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in the film’s trailer.
He rates this revenge movie a solid 10/10. Wright also mentioned that the film’s subtitle, “A Mad Max Saga,” lives up to its word, reminiscent of another revenge film classic, the 11-time Oscar-winning Ben-Hur. Here’s what he had to say about it.
Edgar Wright Compared Furiosa to This Oscar-Winning Classic!
Mad Max: Fury Road was undeniably a resounding success! So, when George Miller took on the responsibility of expanding the saga and following up on the masterpiece that entranced audiences in 2015, people undoubtedly had some apprehensions.

Behind the scenes, director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick have been instrumental in the movement for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts to recognize stunts. The director-producer husband-wife team hasn’t been shy in using their new film, “The Fall Guy,” a love letter to stunt professionals, to advance the cause. And it’s a cause that is increasingly looking like it will become a reality; a significant victory came last spring with the creation of the new Production and Technology Academy branch, which includes stunt professionals and therefore supplies the necessary pathway to a Best Stunt Design category at the Oscars.
“We’ve always been in the shadows, [but] that’s not the problem,” Leitch said when he was a guest on an upcoming episode of the Toolkit podcast to discuss “The Fall Guy.” “That was maybe the misconception for the Academy, ‘Well, these guys want awards because they...

Christopher Nolan is no stranger to winning critical acclaim, but his biopic based on the life of the troubled, unfaithful, Bhagavad Gita-spouting father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has earned him more awards more than any other movie he has ever done, including ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
For starters, Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, after becoming the second highest-grossing R-rated film in Hollywood history after ‘Joker’, notched up 12 Oscar nominations, far more than the eight each of ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
The blockbuster hit ended up with seven Oscars, far less than the 11 each of the Charlton Heston classic, ‘Ben Hur’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, and even the eight each of ‘Gandhi’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
But for Nolan, it must come as a big relief to have finally broken his Oscars jinx and going home with the Best Director trophy,...

John Williams’ film legacy is being immortalized with a Sony Pictures studio building dedicated to the Oscar-, Emmy,- and Grammy-winning composer.
The newly renamed John Williams Music Building on the Sony Pictures’ Culver City lot was unveiled January 18, with Williams’ longtime collaborator Steven Spielberg sharing his admiration for the musician.
“I have grown up with Johnny from the very beginning,” Spielberg said of Williams. “What he’s done for me is something I haven’t been able to imagine. This building is where all my stress dissipates…when I finally get to this stage of a production, and I know I’m in your hands.”
Spielberg added, “In the end I don’t recognize the movies as mine but as ours. Thank you Johnny, my movies would not be the same without you.”

Darin Scott as Moroni, in The Oath. Courtesy of Freestyle & Great Scott Entertainment
A historic drama about the descendants of two brothers from Egypt battling for control in North America, sounds like the premise of an imaginative action film. But The Oath is not really an action film – its only action sequence comes very late in the film – but a romance/heroic drama based in Mormon (more properly the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) belief, by writer/director/star Darin Scott. Scott stars in and directs The Oath, and co-wrote the script with Michelle Scott. The Oath joins a long cinematic tradition of religious movies, a genre that has existed since the beginning of movies and includes films like Ben Hur. Like all cinematic retelling of religious stories, the greatest appeal is for members of that particular faith but The Oath seems like it might be aimed to a more general audience,...

Many native critics have bemoaned the invasion of English-speaking actors turning their hand to the Italian tongue at this year’s Venice Film Festival, easy to spot not, this time, by their proclivity for adding both onion and garlic to a sugo or cream to a carbonara. In this case, it’s Joe Keery, Willem Dafoe, and Lily James in the baffling competition title “Finalmente l’alba,” (“Finally Dawn”), which mixes Italian and American actors in Rome’s booming “Hollywood on the Tiber” era, during which the Cinecittà Studios was a breeding ground for large-scale productions of the 1950s and ’60s such as “Ben Hur” and “Cleopatra.”
Beginning as a “Babylon”-esque tale about the unmitigated heft and mania of epic filmmaking in Rome before becoming a quasi-murder mystery, and then, ultimately, a loss-of-innocence bildungsroman for one of cinema’s least memorable protagonists, Saverio Costanzo’s driverless feature seems to constantly...

The Oscar race got a shake-up this week, with Warner Bros. officially moving “Dune: Part Two” to 2024. It’s a game-changing move that could benefit the summer’s second-highest blockbuster “Oppenheimer.” The two seemed destined to dance in several artisan races at the upcoming Academy Awards.
I agree with the move by WB to move “Dune 2.” Why have its auteur director Denis Villeneuve, shockingly snubbed for the first entry, being forced to go toe-to-toe with several cinema masters? Sequels in franchises missed a directing nom before the third installment swept the next ceremony.
The first “Dune” walked away with six Oscars — production design, cinematography, film editing, sound, visual effects and original score. Based on the trailer and early buzz, the second installment would likely be competitive once again in those same races (perhaps even more). With “Oppenheimer,” Nolan assembles another dynamite team of talented artists, all competitive in those same races.

A blockbuster film tied big records, a legendary actor set a new record, a viewership record was achieved and the Academy celebrated its platinum anniversary in a big way. Billy Crystal hosted the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998, where one film made a “titanic” splash, and the ceremony saw its highest viewership of all time, with more than 55 million people tuning in — a record that stands today not only for the Oscars, but all live awards programs.
It’s a film that people either love or hate (or at least wonder what all the fuss is about), but either way, the huge impact that James Cameron‘s “Titanic” made on the film industry cannot be denied. The most expensive movie ever produced up to that time, many doubted that the romantic tragedy would result in box office gold. IndieWire reached out to the cinematographers whose films are in awards contention and among the most critically acclaimed films of the year to find out which cameras and lenses they used and, more importantly, why these were the right tools to create the visual language of their respective films.
(Films are alphabetical order by title.)
“1917”
Dir: Sam Mendes, DoP: Roger Deakins
Format: Arriraw 4.5K
Camera: Arri Alexa Mini Lf
Lens: Signature Primes 40mm
Deakins: We wanted the “look” of the Alexa Lf with the shallow depth of field the larger sensor brings to the image as well as its higher resolution. We needed the camera to be very small and lightweight so that we could use it on the stabilizing systems necessary for us to make the long and complex camera moves the story demanded. For that reason, the Mini version of the Alexa Lf was key to shooting this project.

Martin Scorsese’s upcoming gangster film “The Irishman” has a runtime of 3 ½ hours, making it the filmmaker’s longest movie and the the longest mainstream American narrative movie in more than two decades.
It will play for audiences for the first time on Sept. 27, day one of the New York Film Festival, but with the unusually early screening time of 3 p.m., making the epic the festival’s “opening day” selection rather than “opening night.” A source confirms that it will run without intermission.
“The Irishman” will run 210 minutes; by comparison,”Wolf of Wall Street” was 180 minutes, “Casino” was 178, “Gangs of New York” 167 and “Goodfellas” 147. All of the films, except “Casino,” received nominations for best director and/or best picture.

As “Avengers: Endgame” crushes everything in its path, it’s already broken box-office records. It’s the top domestic and global release of 2019, and reached the $2 billion worldwide mark faster than any film in history. But when it comes to claiming the biggest-ever box office, that means contending with the adjusted gross.
It could be so much simpler. Money is a plastic concept (and we don’t mean credit cards). Ticket prices vary; time creates inflation. The calculus that remains unchanged is 1 ticket buyer = 1 seat; if we tracked admissions instead of grosses as a metric of success, there wouldn’t be any discussion. Billboard tracks music by units sold; so does the New York Times’ best-sellers lists.
But that’s not the way Hollywood does it. The argument over box-office bragging rights stretches back to “Gone With the Wind,” which set the standard with its $189 million domestic initial gross. As...

With an official Monday domestic gross of $37.6 million, “Avengers: Endgame” (Disney) confirms the promise of the weekend’s massive $357 million domestic take ($1.2 billion worldwide). The 22nd Marvel movie is poised to end up as one of the biggest-grossing theatrical releases of all time.
While the “Endgame” weekend gross bested prior record-holder “Avengers: Infinity War” by 37%, Monday wasn’t a record because it had to beat the holiday Monday numbers notched by “Black Panther” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
With just four days to measure, estimating an ultimate gross is risky, but comparing the box-office trajectory of “Endgame” to the very similar “Infinity War” a year ago gives a strong sense of where it’s headed. Next weekend will provide critical evidence where it will end up (“Infinity” fell 55% on its second). But “Endgame” with a Monday of $36.7 million ($10 million better than “Infinity”) also showed a better percentage of the...

Casting for the new James Bond movie is still under way, but a prominent part is set to be played by the ancient southern Italian town of Matera, Variety has learned.
The town of 60,000 people will provide the setting for what is expected to become “Bond 25’s” prologue action sequence, similar to “Spectre’s” opening segment in Mexico City during Day of the Dead celebrations, insiders say. Preparations to accommodate an estimated 500 production people for the shoot, which is expected to take place in late July, are already underway. Matera’s prehistoric whitewashed caves also provided the backdrops for the Jerusalem set of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.”

The Venice Film Festival begins August 29 and possibly the most anticipated American entry is the world premiere of “A Star Is Born” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who also directed the film. This is at least the fourth telling of this tale. The stars change, the style of music changes, but the story apparently has something that is evergreen — the title, coincidentally, of Barbra Streisand’s Oscar-winning song in the 1976 version.
The latest big-screen reboot of “Charlie’s Angels” was announced earlier this summer, and as we speak, Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner are prepping a reimagining of “West Side Story.” It might make sense to attempt a new take on a great idea that didn’t work the first time. (The Rat Pack’s “Oceans 11” became the much better George Clooney version.) But for an iconic musical that won 10 Oscars?

Jack Huston plays Judah Ben-Hur and Morgan Freeman plays Ilderim in Ben-Hur from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Paramount Pictures.
Check out the trailer, along with the first poster, for the timeless epic, Ben Hur, based on the best-selling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ.
Paramount Pictures’ newest version of the timeless classic is one of the most-anticipated movies of 2016.
Will be interesting to see how this film compares to the 1959 classic, directed by William Wyler, produced by Sam Zimbalist for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Hugh Griffith and Haya Harareet. The nine-minute chariot race has become one of cinema’s most famous sequences, and the film score, composed and conducted by Miklós Rózsa, is the longest ever composed for a film and was highly influential on cinema for more than 15 years.
The 2016 version’s score is from composer Marco Beltrami.

Update: Looks like her Wonder Woman gig has proved too conflicting for Ben-Hur. Scheduling issues means she's dropped out of talks for the Biblical epic. Though her Justice League duties – including the long-awaited solo Wonder Woman film that has just been confirmed – will keep her busy in the coming years, Gal Gadot isn’t just relying on superhero work to push her career along. She’s now in talks for a lead role in Ben Hur.Taken once again from Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel, the new version aims to chronicle the younger days of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and Messala (Toby Kebbell), best friends growing up in Jerusalem before the Roman Empire takes over. Ben-Hur is a Jewish prince and Messala the son of a Roman tax collector who is packed off to be educated in Rome for five years. Upon his return, he mocks our hero for his religion,...

Gal Gadot is racking up one high profile role after another. Our future “Wonder Woman” is in early talks for Esther, the female lead in the upcoming “Ben’Hur.” Meanwhile, “Game of Thrones” breakout star Pedro Pascal is also joining the film, eyeing the role of Pontius Pilate. The film is based on “Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ,” a 1880 novel by Lew Wallace. The drama follows Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a nobleman wrongly accused of a crime and ending up a slave for years, because his best friend Messala (Toby Kebbell) betrays him. He returns for vengeance for the [...]

Recently we caught up with "The Originals'" Joseph Morgan to talk a bit about his latest film, Armistice, as well as playing the anti-hero and of course the finer and favorite parts of portraying Klaus Mikaelson. Read on for the goods.
First, Morgan spoke about what attracted him to Armistice. "Working with the director, Luke Massey, was the main thing that attracted me to the project. I worked with him on a short film previously with Matt Ryan, who played the other role in Armistice. Luke was the director of photography, and it was just a great experience."
"Luke was very much into the same films as I was and the same comics and books so we geeked out a lot together. When he presented me with Armistice, which is his directorial debut, and then I met Ben [Read], who wrote the film with him, it just seemed like the...

While not the epic 1959 Charlton Heston film, Ben Hur the miniseries does attempt to achieve television levels of epicness. And by channeling HBO’s Rome, this miniseries succeeds. The retelling of this religion-infused revenge saga turns out to be a not-terrible way to spend three hours. If it seems an odd time to be releasing a 2010 miniseries on DVD, it is probably related to the fact that nearly the entire cast has been featured in popular TV shows this season.
Ben Hur tells the story of two childhood friends whose lives go in drastically different directions leading to an unforgivable betrayal and lifelong quest for revenge. Judah Ben-Hur (Joseph Morgan, The Vampire Diaries) is wrongly accused of inciting a riot that endangered the life of Pontius Pilate (Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey). As a result, Judah’s former best friend and now up-and-coming Roman soldier Messala (Stephen Campbell Moore, Hunted) condemns...

Ben Hur
Directed by: Steve Shill
Cast: Joseph Morgan, Stephen Campbell Moore, Emily VanCamp, Ray Winstone, Alex Kingston, Hugh Bonneville
Running Time: 3 hr 12 mins
Rating: Not Rated
Due Out: April 30, 2013
Plot: When a tile falls during a Roman parade, Judah Ben-Hur (Morgan) and his family are wrongfully punished. Sent away to be a slave, Ben-Hur eventually returns to his home seeking revenge.
Who’S It For? Those who enjoyed History Channel’s The Bible or other similar adaptations might find some enjoyment in this Ben Hur miniseries. Anyone who is only interested in seeing what an updated take on the chariot race looks like should save themselves the trouble.
Movie:
Though its aspirations are far more modest, I went in expecting Ben Hur to be similar to the recent History Channel miniseries, The Bible. While I’m not religious, I slogged through it because I still find a lot of the stories interesting.

Canadian TV series "Lost Girl", which also airs on Syfy here in the States, has lined up a pretty impressive guest star for its upcoming Season 3: none other than ass-kicker supreme Linda Hamilton.
TVLine reports that Hamilton (The Terminator, "Beauty and the Beast") will guest star in Season 3's tenth episode as Acacia, “a tough, sexy, and ruthless assassin who has enjoyed a storied and deadly career.”
Season 2 of "Lost Girl" is currently finishing out its run on Syfy by moving to Friday nights at 10:00 Pm, and Season 3 will air on both Syfy and Showcase in 2013 (Syfy says January while Showcase just says winter).
Synopsis:
Anna Silk (Being Erica) stars as seductress Bo, a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Of course, for the most part I only know of Lost Girl from its U.S. airing, but I’m a fan, and Linda Hamilton showing up is just too cool.
She’ll be guest-starring as an assassin no less, and it ought to be a rather fun trip. Call me crazy, but this show just gets better and better, and I love to see things coming south.

Anna Silk (Being Erica) stars as seductress Bo, a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Excellent news about a fun, entertaining supernatural crime show with some cool creatures, a fair amount of sex and terrific chemistry between the characters. Hopefully you’ve been catching Lost Girl on Syfy, Mondays at 10/9c. The show is Syfy‘s only “acquired” scripted series. It’s a Canadian production and has been broadcast there with great success and rabid fans, if my international Twitter feed is any indication.
It was renewed for a third season in Canada back in December, before Season 1 debuted here on Syfy in January. Syfy began airing Season 2 the week after Season 1 concluded, and Season 2 is still rolling out now. It’s great news that we’ll be seeing the third season here as well. Here’s the press release:

Well, there’s a much bigger audience for this news than there was when I mentioned that the second of Lost Girl was coming, so hopefully there are a lot of you out there that are glad to hear that Season 3 is getting underway.
It’s timely news as well, now that Syfy kicked off Eureka! last night, which hopefully gave Lost Girl even more of a boost. It’s also timely, because I know there are some folks out there who started to wonder when Syfy began talking about Season 2 of a rebroadcast show that didn’t actually have a Season 3 yet.
I love Syfy for airing the show, but it’s tricky for some fans who may find themselves unsure how much they want to invest in a show, when the network you’re watching it on isn’t really in control of what happens.
At any rate,...

Some may have felt Kristin Kreuk’s Smallville character, Lana Lang’s romance with Clark Kent dragged the show to a halt. The super hero drama would fall into convoluted emo-driven subplots that action fans didn’t want to be bothered with. Besides, we all knew Superman would someday be with his Lois Lane when he got to Metropolis. In reality, Kreuk was just warming up for what could be an even bigger romantic fantasy, as the lead role in the CW’s modern take on the 1980′s Beauty and The Beast series that starred Linda Hamilton (Terminator) and Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy).
Kreuk will play Catherine, a New York City homicide detective, who is still emotionally damaged from her mother’s murder nine years ago. The killer was taken care of swiftly by Vincent Koslow, The Beast. Using her skills as a detective, she tracks down the Beast,...

It is the early part of the first century Ad and Rome occupies Judea. Judah Ben-Hur, a young Jewish man has been friends with Messala, a Roman and the son of a powerful Senator, since they were boys. On the day that Messala rides back into Jerusalem with the newly appointed governor Pontius Pilate, an accidental slip by Ben-Hur’s family results in tiles falling from their home onto Pilate. Pilate is determined to make an example of them, sentencing Ben-Hur to be crucified and his mother and sister to be garroted. Somehow, Judah finds himself a slave on a Roman galleon instead, though he continues to hope for escape, that he might exact his revenge on Messala.

Kreuk will guest-star in the pilot as Susan Longstreet, the wife of Jamie Bamber’s crime scene expert. Should the Peacock pick up the series, the role has the potential to go recurring.
