Great short thriller

Arrivee is making a name for himself for the slow-build character piece - his previous major work, Silent Radio, takes the viewer inside the mind of his protagonist with slow, careful editing and character development, and he has clearly decided to raise the stakes with his latest work, Man at the Door. This 30-minute short draws you in with long shots, slow editing, tight camera frames, and minimalist soundtrack. I found myself inside the head of the main character, her isolation within the big city, her need for independence coupled with her fear of being alone, and her confusion at the events unfolding around her. I loved the fact that Arrivee was very sparing with subtitles - most of the Spanish is frustratingly unclear for the non-Spanish speaker, drawing you into the main character's head as she struggles to understand her predicament. Definitely worth the price of admission!
