By Robert W. Welkos The Curse of the Blood Moons isn’t on any studio release schedule this year as far as we know, but then again, we’re not talking about the latest horror flick. We’re talking about Hollywood itself. No matter how you look at it, 2014 is shaping up to be among the most turbulent year Hollywood has ever experienced—and we have yet to reach summer. It wasn’t that long ago that Hollywood was reeling from the drug overdose death of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman in his Greenwich Village apartment. Hoffman’s death followed on the heels of director Woody Allen being accused by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow of molesting her when she was only 7 years old. Then there was the suicide of Nancy Motes, Julia Roberts’ half-sister, who died of a drug overdose and left a five-page suicide ranting against the Oscar winner.

Nightmare Factory (2011)
Directed by: Donna Davies
Featuring: Gregory Nicotero, Howard Berger, Gabriel Bartalos, John Landis, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, and more.
There’s a unique subset of horror fan that enjoys the horror documentary. Some would rather not know what the man looks like behind the curtain, or all the drama, politics, or bureaucracy behind getting a horror movie made. Then there are others that will take all the inside information and factoids that they can get. Maybe being able to get a glimpse into the lives of horror directors and effects guys, and that they have the same problems as us, or sitting back in the armchair, and thinking “I could’ve done that!”. Whatever the case, I personally love a good horror documentary.
“Nightmare Factory” tells the story of Knb Effects Group, particularly Greg Nicotero, who has become legendary in the horror world,...

Review: Epix Documentary 'Nightmare Factory' Details The Hard Work Behind Horror's Scariest Monsters
Every Halloween people indulge in horror movie marathons, where fountains of gore crescendo skyward, madmen make mincemeat of unsuspecting victims, and otherworldly monsters prowl menacingly with gore-dipped fangs. While watching these movies, it's easy to take these terrifying creatures of the night for granted. But how do those ghouls, goblins, and gross-out zombies actually make it to the screen? That is the question effects guru Greg Nicotero is faced with everyday and one that the new Epix documentary "Nightmare Factory" fully engages with. Zombies, werewolves, and vampires all have to start somewhere, and that somewhere is often Nicotero's Knb Effects factory floor. At the beginning of this lively documentary, Nicotero lays it all out. "We've done 900 movies," he estimates. "We're one of the most prolific, if not the single most prolific, effects company in the world." And it's true – just running down their roster of films shows both the scope of their imagination and.

For the couch potatoes among us, getting in the Halloween spirit can simply mean sprawling out on the couch in front of a Freddy Krueger marathon. Howard Berger features in a new documentary called Nightmare Factory, which showcases some of the best make-up effects he has created over the years with Greg Nicotero - his business partner at K.N.B. Effects Group. Together, they have worked on some of the biggest movies in the history of Hollywood, such as Evil Dead II, Pulp Fiction and From Dusk Till Dawn.

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

Nightmare Factory
Stars: Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, George A Romero, Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, Frank Darabont, Robert Rodriguez | Directed by Donna Davies
In 1989 Greg Nicotero quit medical school and headed for Hollywood to pursue a dream of making monsters. Together with splatter maestros Howard Berger and Robert Kurtzman, Nicotero created the Knb Efx Group. Nightmare Factory is the story of Knb and in particular Greg Nicotero – from humble beginnings, to the rockstar excesses of their fame in the 80s, to today where they known and respected as one of the most prolific make-up effects studios in the world.
From the humourous, yet affectionate, look at Troll 2 with Best Worst Movie, to the decade spanning, in-depth story of the Nightmare on Elm Street series with Never Sleep Again, the horror documentary, a small but growing sub-genre that is steadily becoming one of the most interesting aspects of both the documentary and horror genres.

Last Friday saw the final line-up for this years London Film4 FrightFest, aka FrightFest the 13th, announced to an eagerly awaiting public – myself included.
