SIlly Movie, Great Concept
jamaisj-838-9373212 September 2019
In every super-hero universe you have the also-rans, the heroes with silly powers that you're never sure how they made it onto the team roster. This is the story of one such person.

This is not a fast-paced movie, and that works. A writer is looking at Squid Man's life, and the exploration of that allows exploration of the universe. It's sort of fun to look at it through the lens of a third-string hero, and this does not disappoint.

The acting is on point, and there is some excellent casting, and it asks all of the right question while making the right points. If you're looking for a movie that explores the super-hero genre and want to have some fun doing it, this is it.

Surprisingly watchable little movie

It's not a masterpiece, but there were a many funny moments and little surprises, that kept it interesting. The premise is cute, and the acting is excellent. There's something charming about having such realistic dialogue and well-developed characters in a film with such a silly premise.

I rate it about 6.5.

it could easily fit into the Marvel Universe.
webhead-975532 December 2023
Most of my reviews are negative because I dislike saying 'me too' about the films that I like. But I liked Squid Man, it is cheap, it is ridiculous, but it is also well written, well acted, and well photographed. If it had the budget of a Marvel movie it could easily fit into the Marvel Universe. Marvel has it's share of third rate heroes/villains. (Venom, Starlord) that make for good stories when handled well. Squid Man is well done and I recommend this film.

Positive reviews are boring, so please forgive me for my negative reviews elsewhere. Positive reviews are boring, so please forgive me for my negative reviews elsewhere.

Goodness, not power
tgemberl6 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I love Squid Man. This might become one of my favorite movies. Some years ago I told a friend that I like movies about people who lack power, not people with power. This film fits the bill and shows the absurdity of superhero films. It has a tagline, "Life is not a comic book." In the end, Lord Paradox, probably the only "super" person in the movie (super villain), fails to get what he wants, the pretty girl to be his queen. That's a touching moment, when he sees that all the crazy things he's done to get her failed. All she wanted was a decent, nice guy. She was happy with Squid Man.

The beginning of her contact with Lord Paradox is when he, in another guise, rescues her and her father from a plane crash when she's a child. As he leaves he says to her, "whenever you get in trouble in life, look for a super hero." At this point he's already smitten with her. Apparently he's unable to just approach her and ask for a date after she's an adult. He has to go through a bunch of bizarre stunts to impress her, and it fails.

Squid Man isn't much of a superhero, but I think he ends up at peace, though probably without that pretty woman, who had been captured by Lord Paradox.

The film is hilarious at many points. The special effects are quite good in the "superhero" parts. That adds to the humor: all these impressive effects for something ridiculous!

I wonder why the woman who played their love interest hasn't been in more things. She was very good in this film, in my opinion.

A good movie.

A good movie.

Enter squid man a down and out superhero who is kicked out of his brand of other heroes and crashes on his friends couch until he gets on his feet and his life back again.

Squid man gets eerie jobs and springs into mild bad situations a few fist fights and fights with words not to minor nor big of a deal but all still good to squid man.

Squid man sees his future not to fully nor in depth but it is there in front of him then follows through with life as it is before him.

This movie is pretty good as long as you give it a watch you''ll be fine :)

The casting is perfect through beginning to end

7 out of 10 is the most accurate score i can give it now.

Surprising depth in a goofy premise
BomageMinimart19 July 2019
This movie is slow-paced so I kept thinking "man, nothing really happening here; I'll just switch it off" but somehow I always wanted to see what happened next. The story is decent enough, the premise is goofy but embraced whole-heartedly, and there's almost zero action going on. So why keep watching?

The acting. And the characters. Absolutely solid acting from Andrew Roth, Laurel Schroeder, Eric Bryant and Chad Eric Smith. And the characters they get to inhabit, especially Roth as Squid Man, are the exact opposite of most superhero movies: they have depth.

I can't get all my thoughts together on this one just yet (I finished watching it less than 10 minutes ago), but it is right up there with 1997's Spaceman and 2001's The American Astronaut as far I'm concerned: low budget doesn't have to mean poorly made or cheap or camp. It just means you do more with what you have. In this one, director Charlie Cline, his production crew (the sound and cinematography are excellent) and his cast absolutely nailed it.

I know I will watch this movie again.

The Fall of Squidtopia
shazzy-7536911 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is an epic achievement in cinematic film. Squidboy ruled over the kingdom of Squidtopia with an iron tentacle for decades. This film begins with the failed cuttlefish revolt, and continues through the final successful regime change of 2004. you'll see how it was begun by a charasmatic giant Pacific octopus named Joe who was born with only 7 arms (septopus?) but still managed to single handedly unite both crustaceans and most cephalopods to the *Show of Hands* movement. My only question is why the film downplayed the love affair between Joe and and Sarah the lobster. Come on guys! It's 2020!!!! Also, we never see what ultimately happened to squidboy when he escaped by latching onto the belly of a killer whale. My guess is they were thinking sequal, but with the untimely passing of the actor who played "Joe," I fear that we'll never get closure on this last chapter of Squidtopia.

The special effects were good, but understated. The dialogue was strong, although the actor who played squidboy seemed to overact in his monologues (just my opinion). The score was much better than expected. You may remember lots of folks didn't think the band "RU12BSeen" was up to the task (and at times they do seem to struggle) but they didn't disappoint.

Highly recommend this one!
