Since the beginning, The Challenge: All Stars has been giving all-new meaning to the term “veterans.” Whereas The Challenge proper and other spinoffs like The Challenge: U.S.A. have been busy introducing fresh blood into the franchise, All Stars gives some of the longer-in-the-tooth Challengers a place to shine. This season, which premieres on April 10 on Paramount+, there are some serious blasts from the past in play, including a few folks even the most dedicated Challenge fan might’ve forgotten. The vastness of the generational variety in Season 4 brings with it a few ages-old alliances that put certain folks in peak positions right from the start. On the other hand, there are also some more recent folks who are already good enough to count as an “All Star,” and that’s a wholly different kind of advantage. TV Insider caught up with a few of the returning stars from The Challenge:...

Big Brother 23 featured Derek Xiao and Claire Rehfuss.
The BB23 cast members were on the wrong side of The Cookout alliance that summer, leading to their early exits from the game.
But Derek and Claire made it to the jury phase. A romantic relationship developed between them in the jury house.
The secret of the relationship between Derek and Claire was kept close by their fellow jury members, and it only became public after the season finale.
As a reminder, The Cookout dominated that season, taking all six of its alliance members to the end.
The BB23 jury voted unanimously for Xavier Prather to win over Derek Frazier. It made Xavier the first winner of the $750,000 prize. The prize had been at $500,000 for the previous 22 seasons.

The Challenge: Battle For a New Champion featured several showmances in episodes, including MTV newcomer Kyland Young and former finalist Melissa Reeves becoming an item.
Kyland arrived on the competition series after competing in CBS’ Big Brother 23 and The Challenge: USA’s debut season.
Melissa, who reached the Total Madness final but had to drop out, returned to MTV’s show after a brief hiatus in which she was raising her baby daughter.
The Season 39 castmates were strongly interested in one another. This included Kyland standing up for Melissa to castmates several times as they tried to eliminate her.
Melissa eventually bowed out after losing to Ride or Dies champion Tori Deal in an event at The Arena, but she didn’t leave without Kyland saying his goodbye.
Kyland would leave the show much later due to his impressive performances in multiple eliminations, including against former champs. Following his Season 39 exit,...

CBS debuted its newest late-night show last night and the numbers are.
After Midnight, hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, was watched by an average of 686,000 viewers in the 12:37am hour, per Nielsen’s live+same day fast national data.
This compares to The Late Late Show with James Corden’s live+same day average of 806,000 for its final season.
Some caveats, the data does not yet include viewing from out-of-home, which will be available on Friday, most of the networks only really pay attention to the live+3 numbers, and it was After Midnight’s debut show. It will be interesting to see whether the game show format gets a bigger jump in delayed viewing than a traditional late-night show, which is slightly more topical.
After Midnight was up 31% across all viewers compared to the time period over the season, where Comics Unleashed has often aired while CBS waited to debut The Late Late Show replacement.

After Midnight finally made its debut January 16 in the timeslot formerly held by James Corden.
Hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, the show is a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network. For those who didn’t see the original version, imagine a combination of Who’s Line Is It Anyway? and Tosh 2.0: it’s an internet-themed panel game show that challenges comedians to come up with the best yuks during a series of improv games.
For the premiere, Whitney Cummings battled it out against Aparna Nancherla (former writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Kurt Braunohler (former host of IFC’s Bunk) in front of a studio audience for the grand prize of “my father’s approval,” quipped Tomlinson. “It is rare but winnable.”

The Challenge was one of the best reality TV shows for a long stretch, delivering exactly what the fans wanted.
There were feuds, competitions, romances, and everything else you'd expect from a show where the goal is to win as much money as possible.
While the series has remained on MTV, Paramount Global has been hard at work expanding the franchise for a worldwide audience.
With The Challenge Season 39 (subtitled "Battle for a New Champion") well underway, it's becoming increasingly clear that the producers and network are now out of touch with fans who have enjoyed the format for years.
The series features 20+ contestants who have never won a season of the show before.
The move means that the likes of Chris "Ct" Tamburello, Jordan Wisely, Laurel Stucky, and Tori Deal were not part of the regular cast, leaving us with many newer faces.

MTV’s The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion is finally here, and we can’t wait to see how it all goes down with a cast full of contestants who’ve never won. This season, players who’ve never become Challenge champions get their fair shot at winning — and there’s an entirely new format they’ll have to follow. Here’s how The Challenge Season 39 works, plus information on the season’s biggest twist.
MTV’s ‘The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion’ has a new format
MTV’s The Challenge Season 39 brings an entirely new concept, format, and twist. As a longtime fan of the MTV series, I enjoy seeing veteran players take on newbies, as it’s always nice to see familiar faces and old feuds burn brightly in a new season. However, fans (myself included) must get used to an entirely new cast with season 39, Battle for a New Champion.

Season 2 of “The Challenge: USA” concluded Thursday night with “Survivor” veterans Chris Underwood and Desi Williams racing their way to the championship and splitting a $500,000 cash prize. Placing second and third on the men’s side were “Challenge” vet Cory Wharton and seven-time winner Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio. Watch their exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson above.
For Cory, coming in second place for the third time in his “Challenge” career was a tough pill to swallow. Day 1 of the final got off to a rocky start, with the competitor losing all four “Trials,” which earned him a five minute penalty at Day 2’s starting line. “I put a lot of work into ‘The Challenge,'” he explains. “Leaving the family and all of the gym sessions beforehand…throughout the whole season you want to go to the finals. You want to put your best day forward.

"Michaela is an anomaly. Generally, when people are afraid to do something, their fear overwhelms their ability to perform. Michaela is wired the exact opposite. The more terrified Michaela is, the better she performs." That benediction, delivered by the mascot of The Challenge himself, Johnny Bananas, not only sums up Michaela Bradshaw's performance in competitions on this season of The Challenge: USA, but it underlines just how far she's come since she first appeared on Survivor in 2016. When The Challenge: USA airs its season finale on Thursday, win or lose, Michaela will have completed one of the most satisfying arcs in recent reality TV history.

In reality TV, trailers often serve as tantalizing appetizers, whetting the audience’s appetite for drama. This is especially true for fans of The Challenge: USA, who recently found themselves grappling with a letdown: a major fight between contestants Josh Martinez and Faysal Shafaat was teased but never aired.
The clash, hinted at in the show’s promotional material, sparked many theories and debates among viewers. It raises questions about the editorial choices of producers, especially when such moments could arguably enhance the season’s narrative arc.

Fans of The Challenge know all too well the frustration of having buzzworthy moments hinted at in trailers but snipped out of the final broadcast. It’s a common issue in reality TV, but it’s particularly annoying for fans who crave the full dramatic story.

Cassidy Clark became the 15th contestant eliminated from “The Challenge: USA” on Thursday night, following her loss to Chanelle Howell in the arena. In a not-so-classic version of “Hall Brawl,” the opponents smashed into each other in a narrow hallway and then had to complete a puzzle. Chanelle finished the fastest, sending the “Survivor 43” runner-up packing just before the season finale. Watch our exclusive video interview with the eliminated contestant above.
“It’s so bittersweet,” she tells Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. “I was really proud of everything that I had done in the game. Having to fight that hard just to come up short of making the final was pretty devastating. I was in a lot of shock when it happened because it was over so quickly. Before I blinked I was out. At the same time, I had practice in losing right at the end in an epic way on ‘Survivor.

Michele Fitzgerald became the 14th contestant eliminated from “The Challenge: USA” on Thursday night, following her loss to Cassidy Clark in the arena. In the game “Hot Wheel,” Cassidy was the first to torch all six of her targets and sent the “Survivor 32” champ packing by a score of 6-1. “I was so mentally and emotionally checked out at that point,” Michele tells Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. “When you go in you have to have a fire to come back into the game.” Prior to the arena Michele got into a heated fight with Michaela Bradshaw, with whom she clashed all season. “She plays the game super logically and I play really emotionally,” she reveals. “We always wanted the same end goal, but it’s how we got there. She’s out in the sunlight and I play in the shadows.

Michele Fitzgerald lucked out, for the most part, in playing both the Survivor and vets side in The Challenge: USA Season 2… until she didn’t. After doing what was best for her game with the previous vote and not putting Tori Deal‘s name in the hopper (but rather Chris Underwood‘s) and lying to Desi Williams and Chanelle Howell, Michele was one of the players nominated for elimination this week. (Chris and Desi won the daily.) Cassidy Clark, with seven votes, was the one whose name came out of the hopper, and she beat Michele in Hot Wheel: They had to use a steering wheel to light their color targets. Here, Michele talks about her time on The Challenge: USA, why you shouldn’t expect to see much different about her when she competes in Battle for a New Champion (premiering October 25 on MTV), and more.
