Fantastic Adherence to the Books
erikchaseamazon3 December 2022
Just watched the first episode, and fell in live all over again! Great introduction to the characters and the artwork is so great! It really brings you into the town of Glipwood. The introduction of the different creatures right at the start gets you so excited to see more of this incredible world. The voice acting is very well done and is exactly in the tone of the expected feeling from the books. The singing in the books has always been interesting and we were not disappointed with the performances in the first episode! There is so much more in store in this epic story, and my family is incredibly excited to follow along.

A promising, if uneven, start
elijahaldrich-152143 December 2022
I've only read the first book of this series with my daughter and we both loved it. It's an excellent story, well told with wonderful characters, and a placed in a charming world.

The first episode of the TV show attempts to bring us into the world Peterson so wonderfully wrote, and it ends up (by the end of the first episode) feeling rushed and uneven.

It deviates pretty strongly from the book in some key areas-notably the character introductions-and makes me worry a bit for how it will handle the narrative going forward. Already, the discovery of the dangers of Glipwood Forest has been subverted by an intro that was far different in the book and better done in the short film.

There are also audio mixing issues where the voices don't always clear the mix and come out muddled and incomprehensible. The music is also mixed poorly and feels too rote in places and ill fitting in others.

Perhaps I expected too much from the animation after the short film, but I felt a little let down initially. Thankfully, it's done well enough that I was drawn in and enjoyed it after readjusting my expectations. The character designs are excellent and the voice actors do a great job with their characters.

Criticisms aside, there is so much potential in this show already and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of this season and reading the other books with my daughter soon.

So thankful

Such an important story!!! The Wingfeather Saga was the first novel series my 10 year old daughter fell in love with while she listened to us read it to her, and I kept luring her into confidence until she finally started reading it herself. She looks at the maps and memorizes all the details.

She waited in anticipation, and she was thrilled to see the show. The storyline is so deep and sweet for kids as well. We just finished the first episode, and we will watch all the other ones that come out! The animation is unique and creative and just took me a minute to get used to and then I loved it. It's really beautifull.

WHAT!?!?
KalmarShuffler3 December 2022
I don't have words to describe how I feel! Everything was beautiful! The characters. The background paintings. The props. The Fangs!!!

Andrew Peterson, Chris Wall, Keith Lango, Ron Smith, The Arcadian Wild, Kurt Heinecke, and everyone else involved have done the impossible. They took the best book series ever and translated it wonderfully to the screen.

All the creatures look phenomenal. Bumpy Digtoad, Fazzle Dove, Thwaps, Toothy Cow, and Sea Dragons!! Just amazing!

Every character was perfectly cast. They all sound just as I imagined them to.

I do not have words. I just don't.

And can we just give a round of applause to Kurt and The Arcadian Wild for the beautiful, amazing score?! 👏 👏👏

A wonderful adaptation of a great book series!
chriscasoni-38-3826123 December 2022
I have enjoyed reading this series with my children and enjoyed watching this show just as much! It's a thrilling family adventure filled with mystery, action, adventure, and a compelling narrative. I'm so thankful for Andrew Peterson and his team for bringing this to the screen.

The voice talent brings these characters to life in a fun way. The writers have set a nice pace for world building for an adventure that has twist and turns filled with a wonderful and magical land.

The music is riveting and filled with the talented Andrew Peterson.

I hope the show gets a full run and allows many to experience a needed story.

Together adventure
nealsharmon3 December 2022
Once, in a great while a show comes along where young and old look forward to watching together. Wingfeather is such a show.

The story immediately draws the family in and the animation is completely different than anything we've seen before. It seems like every frame is a piece of art.

Our 11 year old, who read the books, ended up buying wingfeather shirts for himself because he is deeply into the story. I think he has read the books twice. He is so excited for the show and he's struggling to avoid spoilers. "I want to be able to talk to the rest of the family about it!" He said.

So, tonight we all watched the livestream of episode one together. We will be there in two weeks for episode two!

Whole family loved the first episode.
rickytony-970593 December 2022
My son has heard all the books in audio and was so ecstatic for the series, honestly so was I. He, as the rest of us we enamored by the animation and so excited to see this story come to life visually. Even my younger kids that didn't hear the audio book where glued to the tv. The voice acting was spot on, the animation style was breathtaking . The story was true to the source material. With so many inappropriate kid shows out there I am glad this wholesome show was created so they could have something good to watch without me having to worry about what will pop up next. We can't wait to see the future episodes.

Absolutely Love The Wingfeather Saga
imacarolinian3 December 2022
I and my family absolutely LOVE The Wingfeather Saga first episode. We waited for months for the first episode. We weren't disappointed. We can't wait for episode 2. The animation is pure art. It's beautiful. And we like the music as well. The characters are fun and interesting. I am looking forward to the series exploring them deeper. This is just so well done. It was worth the wait. I have not read the book set The Wingfeather Saga, but I am certainly going to read it now. What a magnificent idea to turn this book series into a television series. Brilliant. I will definitely be telling everyone I know to watch.

Thwaps and Dragons and Fangs Oh My! (And toothy cows!)
nanningachristina3 December 2022
My son and I love the Wingfeather Saga books and were very excited to see the animated take on the series. Introducing characters and settings for the first time is always challenging and these books have a lot of vibrant imagery in the descriptions to portray. It took a minute or two for me to adjust my mental pictures to what was being portrayed by the artists, but I found myself quickly swept into the story and the animation style grew on me as we met more characters - especially the dragons!

I am definitely looking forward to seeing the next episode and watching the story unfold - perhaps even more now than initially.

Though I will always recommend the books first, this animated representation is engaging, unique, elegant, and intriguing - much like the books!

Congrats to the author and production team!
Snowbeard-12343 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am very happy for the author. Hats off to the production team for all their hard work.

The artwork was stunning, if a bit out of focus. It was reminiscent of gloppy painting styles such as impressionism or expressionism.

Unfortunately, the issues for me started from second one. The production teams live feed of the studio was choppy. Their Internet signal must have been low. Which made the claymation/stop motion of the show more difficult to watch.

The issues cascaded from there. The soundtrack and dialogue were too loud separately. Combined it was all noise, especially with background noise. I say background noise but the sound lacked depth. It was another layer of paint on an already heavy painting. And the dialogue recordings were surface level instead of embedded to the character in proportion to spacing or placement.

I did expect new scenes and scenes edited or reordered from the book. However, it was still disheartening to see the difference between the book and short film to the TV show. The igiby family going about their chores created such a home-ly tone. I get the adventurous boy antics of the TV show's opening scene but still...

Overall, I can't rate this as high as I would like. The books are excellent! In my opinion, the most creative Christian Fantasy since Chronicles of Narnia.

My kids liked the show even though they too said the sound was odd, scenes were missing or out of order, and the stop-motion made them blink a lot.

Again, congratulations to the author and production. Today was a big day. I hope my review doesn't dampen your spirits. As long as you are happy with the end product is all that matters.

A show for anyone and everyone.
aerwiararchives1 March 2023
I have always been a fan of Andrew Peterson's phenomenal book series, so when news reached me of an animated series in development, I was more than excited to see what the Wingfeather Saga team could put together. And I was not disappointed. This series, despite condensing the story, adapts it in a way that makes it enjoyable for the screen and yet true to the core parts of the books. While the events may not exactly match up, and certain details may be added, the characters and heart of the story remain intact, with Andrew Peterson maintaining creative control presiding over the project alongside executive producer Chris "Charlie Wingfeather" Wall. Season One was a blast, and I can't wait to see what comes of Season Two, and I'm especially looking forward to the soundtracks being released! Great work, Angel Studios and Wingfeather teams!

A great story with very disappointing animation.
jltaylor-1788628 January 2023
My family really wanted to love this show, because we love the Wingfeather Saga. Unfortunately, the animation has left much to be desired. When the first trailer was released I assumed that the animation must still be in development, rather than the final product. The motion is so choppy that it is distracting. The images are so pixelated that it has the feel of a low quality video game. Sometimes portions of the imagery appear to still be rendering like parts of a video game map that are loading during gameplay. This is incredibly frustrating, because much of the imagery is quite beautiful apart from the detracting qualities that I have described.

Since this is a story taken from a children's book and is marketed towards children I must stress that these aren't just my observations. My children all voiced the same complaints and felt the same disappointment and frustration. If we didn't love the Wingfeather Saga so much we wouldn't spend any more time watching new episodes. For the time being, we're holding out hope that the creators will make significant improvements to the animation. This great story deserves the effort it would require to address these problems.

Superb!!!
TheRovingRanger7 January 2023
I read the books of The Wingfeather Saga prior to the show coming out and I am not disappointed!! The heart of the story is still there and with each episode Andrew Peterson, Chris Wall and the Wingfeather team have done an amazing job of drawing me further and further into loving the show!!

I was unsure of the animation style at first but it is definitely growing on me!

It really helps this show to stand out from others that I have seen!

The music is simply outstanding! For me It's up there with some of the greatest soundtracks of all time like Peter Jacksons Lord Of The Rings! Absolutely some of the best soundtrack I have ever heard!!

I hope that more and more people find out about this amazing series, we need more shows like this!! 😄😄😄

My favorite show!
andreajoyjesus24 March 2023
I love the Wingfeather Saga books, and when I heard that they were making it into a show, I was excited! I was a bit concerned that the show might deviate from the books too much, because I hate it when movies and shows do that. And the show does deviate from the books a bit - and somehow, I'm okay with that! (mostly!) Although the order of events and details (and a couple of bigger moments) changed, the story goes in the same direction and the CHARACTERS stay true to the books. This is huge!

And as for the show itself - it's amazing! We've watched each episode over and over, and my kids act it out all the time! It's one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen (I hope I can get prints of the backgrounds!), the voice actors did an amazing job, the animators are incredible, and I could listen to the music all day... and I often do. I highly recommend it!

I worked on the show
chrisdoehling7 May 2023
So I'm a little biased. But, I remain very impressed at the quality of work everyone else on the team put in, and it shows in the final product! I'm a fan! I read the books years before the series began, and didn't realize I was on a course to contribute, but I could picture the he world in my head, and it's been remarkably close to what I imagined. I appreciate the attention to detail on a show with such a limited budget, and the commitment to a hand crafted look, even when utilizing digital tools. The writing/story departments were on point as well, and the animation team hit it out of the park. This show needs more visibility from the general public, and it's a shame it doesn't get more buzz. Truly a hidden gem.

An excellent adaptation of an excellent book series
joshuabb-015053 December 2022
Many movie adaptations don't do their books justice, but it doesn't look like this will be one of them! The story is engaging and very powerful. There's excitement, danger, joy, pain, and plenty of twists and turns. The world-building is outstanding. The characters are compelling, dynamic, and relatable. While this series was produced on a low budget, the animation is beautiful and the acting is convincing. They both add to the story instead of distracting from it. They've also done an amazing job so far handling the transition from book to screen. Hollywood studios should take notes! I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses as they get further into the story.

A breathtaking story come to life!
kdchase-901693 December 2022
My family has loved every one of the books. The show was highly anticipated in our house, and it did not disappoint! The art was beautifully unique, and the soundtrack was incredible. The cast did a wonderful job of bringing these beloved characters to life. My whole family was immediately drawn deeper into the story in a new way. It was so fun to see the creatures in motion; the toothy cow was so wonderfully frightening. The Fangs of Dang were as awful as they were written to be. Wonderful! We look forward to grabbing the soundtrack while we wait for the rest of the series to roll out. You can tell a lot of heart went into bringing this story to the screen. We can't wait for the rest! An amazing story come to life!

Excellent start to the saga!!
mattmcmains-491893 December 2022
I loved reading the Wingfeather Saga with my son. It's such a great story filled with adventure, drama, danger, and redemption. When we heard that there would be an animated film we were super excited and waited with anticipation. Well it did not disappoint! Episode 1 was an excellent start to the wingfeather saga. It was engaging and very well done! The characters were just like we imagined them. The fangs were terrifying, the igaby kids were rowdy with something deeper not yet revealed. And the dragon scene was spectacular! Needless to say, we will be tuning in for the rest!! Set up the story perfectly! Can't wait!

Chef's kiss guys
kwekunelson3 December 2022
I just finished watching episode one and I'm just blown away. It was everything I wanted and more. The art style was very unique. I loved it more than I thought I would from seeing the short clips on youtube. Voice acting spectacular especially Slarb. What! On the fangs, they really felt mean and menacing. For just one episode, they really captured the suffering of the Glipwood folk perfectly. Yurgens tune was also beautiful and overall sound design was great. My only complaint was it ended too quickly. Haha. I can't wait to get my nieces to see this, my whole family to be honest. Major props to all who contributed to make this possible. BIG WIN!!!

Not what I expected, or wanted.
ridgewaysp14 December 2022
As a person who read the books and enjoyed them, I gotta say, the first episode was disappointing. The proof of concept film they created in 2016 felt closer to the spirit of the books then this episode.

I read an enjoyed the books, though I think they had a few major flaws, and weren't as amazing as many seem to think, but they were still enjoyable.

When I heard they were making a tv show, I held my breath in anticipation. They built hype, hired professionals, raised the money. I expected myself to mostly enjoy the series, while slightly cringing at its, lets say, narrative flaws. Now I don't think I will need to worry about those narrative flaws, because the first episode felt GUTTED of everything I expected. And it wasn't just the story that was disappointing, but the visuals and music as well.

I knew things needed to be cut for the show, but they cut things I would never have thought would have been cut. Things in the book that seemed non negotiable, and they cut them. Maybe they will be in a later episode, but even so, its still feels like a poor start. There were also moments in the dialogue that made no sense, and gave contradictory implications.

Visually, it was kind up and down. Some parts were animated consistently, but then other scenes were jankier, and then a few out of the blue that were as smooth as butter, and off putting. The backgrounds were also up and down, not being consistent, sometimes having lots of detail, to hardly any. A few characters also looked like they were made for a completely different show, not being stylised the same way as others. And the characters often didn't look like they were actually in the environment, and the colour palate felt crowding and hard on the eyes. It felt overall like it had low quality control. Where was the art director?

The music was okay, but during the midpoint montage during the festival, the music weirdly made me feel uncomfortable. It didn't sound exactly happy, just weird and disorienting. (That's probably just a personal nitpick)

Perhaps things will improve, but even the characters themselves were changed from what they were, in attitude, behaviour, and desires. If you are a fan of the books, and are looking for a consistent adaptation, I'm not sure if this show will be that, but make up your own mind as we wait for episode 2. I'm aware that the writer of the books is one of the producers of the tv show, but it I'm worried that the original magic of the books will be forgotten.

My family loves the 1st episode!
stephen-718933 December 2022
My family is so excited to see this episode! This is so imaginative! I hope everyone with kids can take the time to watch this; you won't regret it!

The characters are so real and relatable, and they made me laugh. The animation is beautiful and vivid. The scenery has been well done by gifted artists. These episodes give me a new view on the book series; the episodes were very similar to the books. I was surprised at the amount of detail, and this show pleased me ( I can be hard to please). I promise you, this television show is worth the wait.

Loved it! Incredible story telling, amazing animation!
jordankd3 December 2022
What a wonderful first episode! I'm blown away by the incredible animation and fantastic delivery. My kids were looking forward to this more than any other show and it definitely lived up to expectations. Great show With a beautiful message. If you haven't read the books yet, you are absolutely missing out and the show is really living up to their legacy.

Love the bootstrap nature of the production, but wow! You wouldn't guess that this didn't have a massive team behind it. They really knocked the production value out of the park! The voice actions and the script was so well done! We can't wait till the next episode!

Fangs and Dragons and Toothy Cows, Oh my!
davidraysemail3 December 2022
My family has read the books and are absolutely delighted to see this come to animated life! They have truly captured the essence of the setting. The Fangs, the Igiby family, the townsfolk and library feel so close to what Peterson wrote. The toothy cows, the thwaps, the other creatures and, -oh my goodness- the dragons! Just as I imagined when I read the book. The voicing is very well done. The dragon voice is powerful and the fangs voices are very menacing. The animation style was pleasing to watch. I especially liked the bow and arrows in the opening scenes.

One of my kids felt like the action moved a little too fast in the beginning. But the pace slowed down a bit which helped us take in the story.

All in all! Wow! The story was introduced well and I can't wait to watch the next episode.

Gorgeous animation & audio- true to the book
nathan-753863 December 2022
This pilot captures the spirit of the book series extremely well, I read these books to my 8-9 year old daughter and voiced all the characters while reading, of course. We had a blast. I didn't think the series would be able to capture what we created at home, but I'm duly impressed. The animation is absolutely beautiful and I'm super impressed with the audio & music which, for me, is a huge deal. Great audio is necessary for great filmmaking. I think the voice casting is pretty solid, and I love the visually diverse Glipwood. I think the teleplay beats are spot on and represent the first few chapters of the first book extremely well. My favorite moment was when Leeli & the brothers get a brief flash of their powers during the Dragon Day Festival. What a powerful moment... which brought me to tears. Well done production team!

I'm excited to watch these again & again with my kids who adore the books... as do I. Thank you Andrew Peterson for being a conduit!
