Wayne Thiebaud, a Sacramento-based artist and teacher famous for his colorful paintings of desserts and California landscapes, died Dec. 25 at the age of 101. Thiebaud’s death was announced on Instagram by his gallery, Acquavella.
“An American icon, Wayne led his life with passion and determination, inspired by his love for teaching, tennis, and above all, making art,” the gallery wrote. “Even at 101 years old, he still spent most days in the studio, driven by, as he described with his characteristic humility, ‘this almost neurotic fixation of trying to learn to paint.’”
Born in 1920 in Mesa, Arizona, USA, Thiebaud became an apprentice in the animation department at Walt Disney Studios for three months while in high school. He then enrolled at the Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles where he learned sign-painting and other commercial art skills.
Thiebaud’s years as a cartoonist influenced his technique, a stylized realism depicting everyday objects and scenes.

Despite relocating to Chicago in 2015, Shengze Zhu has focused on her hometown of Wuhan throughout her career. Her first feature, Out of Focus (2014), is a creative portrait of the school-life of children from low-income families and the troubles they face. Her second, Another Year (2016), uses long takes to document the mealtimes of migrant worker families. Both are set in Wuhan but were made after she first left China in 2010 to study filmmaking in Columbia, Missouri. For Present.Perfect (2019), she widened her lens, creating a montage of live-streamers living across China entirely from desktop recordings of their broadcasts. […]

On a day when Gina Carano was fired from The Mandalorian and Post Malone revealed he’s putting on a concert to celebrate Pokemon‘s anniversary, the most surprising announcement of the past 24 hours may just be the reveal that the formerly abandoned video game Six Days in Fallujah is being revived.
It’s hard to know where to start with this one, so let’s just go back to the beginning. In 2009, Konami announced they were publishing developer Atomic Games’ upcoming military shooter, Six Days in Fallujah. The game was set to recreate the events of the Second Battle of Fallujah: a 2004 conflict that remains one of the deadliest battles of the Iraq War.
The game was long seen as something of a passion project for Atomic Games who was helping to develop training tools for the Marines when some of the soldiers assigned to advise them were deployed...

As far as reasons go for delaying a movie, the wild popularity of the lead actor isn’t a bad one to have to deal with.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently gave an interview in which he opened up about Deadpool 3. Up until now, fans had a lot of questions about the project. For instance, will it be set in the MCU? Will it maintain the franchise’s R-rating? And, perhaps most importantly, when is it coming?
Well, now we know the answers. Or at least, some of them. It appears that the Merc with the Mouth is indeed making the leap to the MCU as perhaps the sole refugee from Fox’s X-Universe, with my bet being that the dimension-hopping shenanigans in Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will open the door for him.

“Clear Lake” tells the story of how Buddy Holly and other famous musicians of the late 1950s gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll while changing the trajectory of civil rights in America, all leading up to “The Day The Music Died,” when Holly died in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa on February 3, 1959, along with Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson.

Irish actor Ruairi O’Connor will play rock ‘n’ roll icon Buddy Holly in the biopic “Clear Lake” with a tentative production start date set for the spring.
O’Connor, who stars as a young King Henry VIII in the Starz miniseries “The Spanish Princess,” was selected following a six-month search by the producers and casting directors at Presser/Well Casting to find the right actor who both resembled Holly and could handle vocals and instrumentation on classic songs such as “Everyday,” “That’ll Be the Day” and “Not Fade Away.”
The BMG-backed “Clear Lake” will helmed by Bruce Beresford, who received Oscar nominations for the “Breaker Morant” script and for directing “Tender Mercies.” He also directed “Driving Miss Daisy,” which won the Academy Award for best picture. Earlier this week, we shared the ballot that Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz submitted for the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list. It was, to put a mildly, a very eclectic list that included Marching Band Favorites by the Tremont High School Drum Line, Boogaloo in Brooklyn by Juan Epstein, and Ultimate Spinach’s 1968 self-titled debut. Some of these albums are legit even if they are quite obscure, while others exist only in far-off dimensions like the Welcome Back, Kotter Universe.
And then there was number 27: Dance Into the Light by Phil Collins.

A tribute album to Adam Schlesinger being released today on Bandcamp includes cover songs by two actors who collaborated with the late songwriter on projects, Rachel Bloom and Sarah Silverman, as well as contemporaries of Schlesinger’s from the rock world like Kay Hanley, Nada Surf and Tanya Donnelly.
“Saving for a Custom Van,” which takes its name from the title track of the essential Fountains of Wayne album “Utopia Parkway,” is a 31-track collection that covers the breadth of Schlesinger’s performing and songwriting career. Besides familiar FoW songs from the late ’90s and 2000s, the collection also includes songs from his six-season run as the core house writer for TV’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” the films “Music and Lyrics” and “That Thing You Do!,” and Schlesinger’s other long-standing band, Ivy. Even two of the songs he wrote for “Josie and the Pussycats” figure into the expansive track list.

Sixty years. That’s how long a Louisiana judge sentenced Rob Richardson to serve for armed bank robbery. Garrett Bradley covers more than a third of that term in “Time,” and the cumulative impact — boiled down into an open-minded and deeply empathetic 81 minutes — will almost certainly rewire how Americans think about the prison-industrial complex.
Bradley interweaves the day-to-day struggle of Rob’s seemingly tireless wife Fox Rich in the present with nearly two decades of home movies that Rich recorded over the span of her husband’s incarceration. The videos were the last ingredient to fall into place (Rich entrusted them to Bradley only after principal shooting had wrapped), but they’re incorporated beautifully and absolutely define the unconventionally structured result, which earned Bradley the best director prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Netflix is going the impact campaign route as it expands its profile in the U.K. and looks to assure local players of its commitment to the domestic ecosystem.
Why spend marketing dollars on impact? Partially because impact drives are a sure-fire way to raise profile. But for Netflix, this level of campaigning is particularly important in a market where both public and commercial broadcasters perceive it as an existential threat.
Outgoing BBC director general Tony Hall has been one of the industry’s most outspoken critics of cash-flush SVODs, and his successor will likely need to do the same. But to their detriment, what some senior industry figures still fail to understand is how Netflix is able to leverage its content in clever ways, particularly around impact.
