As the world’s largest streaming service and the most popular sport in the United States, Netflix and the NFL have seemed like natural allies for some time.
As the streaming giant noted on social media when it made the announcement, you can’t spell Netflix without NFL. The world’s largest streaming service is now an official game distributor for the top sports league in the United States after it was confirmed on Wednesday that Netflix would offer Christmas Day NFL games in each of the next three seasons, marking the largest investment by the streamer in live sports in its history. The deal is a massive step for Netflix and the NFL alike, considering the conservative approach to sports streaming taken by both companies thus far. That caution is one of the biggest reasons that it took so long for the two sides to team up, as both...

Sinclair, Inc. has hired an investment banking firm to explore a possible sale of more than 60 local television stations, according to a report.
On Thursday, CNBC said the media company was weighing the possibility of trimming its local TV station portfolio by as much as 30 percent, which would involve selling off more than five dozen of its 185 television stations across the country.
Through local marketing agreements, Sinclair operates nearly 300 local broadcast TV stations within the lower 48 states. Stations owned by shell companies like Cunningham Broadcasting and Deerfield Media are not part of the strategy, according to a person familiar with the matter, who confirmed CNBC’s report and provided additional information on condition of anonymity.

These days, it’s never too early to start talking about the Super Bowl.
Fox Corp’s 2025 broadcast of Super Bowl Lix is nearly a year away, slated to air Feb. 9 from New Orleans. During early talks with potential advertisers, however, the company is already making a bid to sell 30-second ads for at least $7 million each, according to three people familiar with the matter. The price could mark a slightly higher starting point in negotiations than that established by Paramount Global, which aired Super Bowl Lviii in February to a record audience and initially sought between $6.5 million and $7 million for a half-minute ad berth.
Fox declined to make executives available for comment.

Paramount has just unleashed its first quarter financials and they look pretty promising, although all eyes are on the shakeup in the C-suite. Revenue was higher across the board, albeit a hair shy of Wall Street expectations. Operating losses narrowed. Free cash flow rose, a key metric since it allows the company to pay down debt.
After a bleak Q4, TV and media group advertising jumped 14%, buoyed by Super Bowl Xviii on CBS in February. The studio had two winners in Mean Girls and Bob Marley: One Love. Paramount+ ended the quarter with more than 71 million subscribers, beating expectations and up from 65.7 million at the end of 2023.
The number hit just after the company confirmed that CEO Bob Bakish is departing, replaced with three division heads in a new office of the CEO amid drama-filled takeover talks with David Ellison’s Skydance.

The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t the only big winners of the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend. With the first-ever streaming-exclusive NFL playoff game, Peacock added 3 million new signups. (Earlier data had the number at 2.8 million over three days.) With Peacock’s free-trial option blacked out for the Chiefs vs. Miami Dolphins, all of those were paid subscribers. They didn’t dine and dash.
New research from Antenna finds that an impressive 71 percent (2.13 million) of those new Peacock users were still around by the end of February, nearly seven weeks after the game. Peacock ended 2023 with 31 million subscribers. The service lost $825 million over the final quarter of ’23, and there is still no timeline on Peacock turning a profit. (Even Paramount+ has one of those.)

Streaming television continued to chip away at broadcast and cable TV delivery in February, according to the latest report from Nielsen Media Research.
The data, published through Nielsen’s The Gauge report, showed streaming accounted for nearly 38 percent of all television watching in the United States last month, up from 34 percent during the same time period last year.
By comparison, broadcast television viewing dropped from 24 percent last year to 23 percent, while cable saw its viewership drop from 30 percent last year to 27 percent this year.
Gains in the streaming sector were buoyed by more consumption of YouTube last month, with more than 9 percent of all TV watching taking place on that platform.

Approximately 20 CBS News staffers were given termination notices Tuesday as a result of broader layoffs taking place across Paramount Global.
The cuts extended across CBS News operations in Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles, according to two people familiar with the matter, and included two of the news operation’s most prominent correspondents, Jeff Pegues and Catherine Herridge, these people said.
A CBS News spokesperson did not respond immediately to a query seeking comment. The Wall Street Journal previously reported on the number of layoffs, while The New York Post reported on some of the staffers who had been affected.
Pegues was named CBS News’ chief national affairs and justice correspondent in March of 2021, while Herridge has worked as an investigative correspondent at CBS News in Washington since joining the operation in 2019 after a long stint at Fox News Channel.

Super Bowl Lviii drew 123.4 million viewers according to CBS, and was the most-streamed Super Bowl in the history of the game.
While Super Bowl Lviii may have been something of a snooze for the first three quarters, the fourth quarter of the game and overtime were more than enough to make for a compelling game overall. The Kansas City Chiefs ultimately defeated the San Francisco 49ers, but the real victor was Paramount Global. It announced this week that Nielsen measured Super Bowl Lviii drawing an average of 123.4 million viewers across all platforms, making it the most-watched telecast in the history of TV.
CBS drew 120 million viewers, the largest audience in the history of the Super Bowl on a single network. Super Bowl Lviii was also the most-streamed Super Bowl in history, though Paramount did not reveal specific numbers for its audience on Paramount+. The ratings show why companies and leagues...

Paramount Global has begun a planned round of layoffs, telling U.S.-based employees that those affected by the cutbacks will be notified by the end of Tuesday.
An internal memo from CEO Bob Bakish (read it below) did not disclose numbers. A person familiar with the cutbacks estimated the total number at 800, which is consistent with a Deadline report last month. Bakish had confirmed the planned cutbacks at a “Bob Live” town hall event in January. The scope and details of the staff reductions will come into focus over the course of the day.
The cuts represent about 3% of the company’s global head count. At the start of 2023, Paramount had 24,500 full- and part-time employees in 37 countries, with another 5,800 project-based staffers.
Like its media peers, Paramount has been squeezed by a slowdown in advertising and a challenging transition from linear TV to streaming. The company will report fourth-quarter earnings at the end of February.

Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish recently asked his staff to prioritize “managing costs” and earnings growth amid expectations of looming layoffs and deal chatter surrounding the entertainment giant.
On Tuesday, the CEO made things official, unveiling plans for job reductions in the U.S., an estimated 800 according to sources, and cuts abroad over time. The company had about 24,500 employees as of its last 10-k disclosure, which reflects staff count in December 2022. Bakish’s memo coincides with what had been an expected, significant move to cut costs early this year as Wall Street evaluates Paramount’s prospects as a stand-alone company.
“Unfortunately, part of streamlining costs means that today, we will begin the difficult process of saying goodbye to some of our very valued colleagues across Paramount,” Bakish wrote in a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “We will be notifying impacted employees who are based in the U.S. by the close of business today.

When it comes to streaming the Super Bowl, Paramount Plus emerged as the big winner of the night when it comes to latency across streaming services.
Paramount Plus had the smallest gap between the action on-field and the delivery of each play to streaming TV sets across the country, according to a study performed by video content delivery service Phenix.
The study evaluated several streaming services offering the big game, which was carried on CBS, Nickelodeon and Univision this year. More than 170 data points were collected during the game, and the benchmarks were weighed against real-time reports from someone at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas during the Super Bowl, as well as broadcast, cable and satellite feeds of the game.

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell make unlikely, AI-assisted cameos in the Jon Hamm-narrated Super Bowl Lviii trailer for Despicable Me 4.
Universal Pictures released the trailer Sunday, and it is set to run on CBS prior to Reba McEntire performing the National Anthem for the NFL’s big game taking place in Las Vegas. Filmmaker Chris Renaud’s animated movie hits theaters July 3, and focuses on the problems that ensue after Gru (Carell) and his family welcome Gru Jr. to their brood.
The new ad appears to tout the benefits of modern technology but features strange images supposedly generated by AI, including women exercising with extra limbs and a group of friends enjoying handfuls of spaghetti.
“Artificial intelligence is changing the world, showing us what we never thought possible, transforming the way we do business, and bringing family and friends closer together,” Hamm says in the spot.

Here’s how to watch or stream the big game. Super Bowl Lviii will air live on CBS. CBS is airing the 2024 Super Bowl, along with seven hours of pre-game coverage. Could Super Bowl Lviii be the most-watched ever?
After a record year for the NFL, Sunday’s big rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers certainly has the potential to break a viewership record.
Currently, the most-watched Super Bowl in history is actually last year’s Chiefs-Eagles game, which was watched by more than 115 million people. That’s also the second most-watched TV program in history.
Given the league’s fairly incremental gains during the regular season, Super Bowl Lviii is unlikely to blow that audience out of the water, but it could inch past it to claim the crown. That’s thanks to a myriad of things including the fact that the Chiefs are competing for their fourth Super Bowl ring — and their third in five years. And, possibly, Taylor Swift.

No matter what happens, we can expect the Super Bowl to put up an impressive audience.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is off and running (pun intended). Not long ago, the official movie’s social media account released a short announcement trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in addition to the announcement that Jim Carrey, who had been circling around the decision to retire, will in fact return as the eggman himself, Dr. Robotnik. The third installment in the series teased the crossover of another character from the Sega game’s universe, Shadow, as the latest addition to the hedgehog family. Paramount has also now released the trailer for the Paramount+ limited series, Knuckles.
According to the press release from Paramount,
“The new live-action event series follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. The series takes place between the films Sonic The Hedgehog 2...

CBS will deploy 165 total cameras for the Super Bowl this year, including “doink” cameras inserted into each endzone pylon.

The Big Game will be played in Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Et and will air on CBS and Paramount+, and there will also be a special “SpongeBob SquarePants“-themed broadcast on Nickelodeon. From a technical standpoint, CBS’s production of the Super Bowl will be quite impressive, including its first-ever broadcast of a 4K event and the use of more 4K zoom extraction cameras for the game than have ever been employed before.

TelevisaUnivision is running more than 90 hours of new programming leading up to its airing Sunday of a Spanish-language telecast of Super Bowl Lviii. Executives hope the NFL may give the company a few more.
The Spanish-language media giant, created via an early 2022 merger between Univision Holdings and Groupo Televisa valued at $4.8 billion, has long shown the annual NFL extravaganza in Mexico, This year, however, it has secured U.S. rights to run a Spanish-language version of the game. And it’s betting a successful telecast will get noticed by the sports league whose games continue to win big linear audiences even as more TV viewers move to streaming.
U.S. rights to NFL games are sewn up for years in multi-billion dollar deals with Paramount Global, Fox Corp., NBCUniversal, Disney and Amazon. But the league has proven adept at carving out ways to reach new crowds. Univision can’t help...

New episodes of “True Detective” normally drop on Sundays, but the broadcast of Super Bowl Lviii is compelling a change in the broadcast schedule.
Warner Bros. Discovery is used to owning Sunday nights with new releases of its original TV series, but this week it knows it has no chance to dominate the ratings. That’s because Super Bowl Lviii is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Et on CBS this Sunday, and if last year’s numbers are any indication — Super Bowl Lvii averaged 113 million viewers in 2023, making it the third-most-watched television program of all time — there won’t be much point to trying to air a competing program in that time slot. That’s part of the reasoning behind Wbd’s decision to place its upcoming new episode of “True Detective” on its streaming service Max much earlier than its standard Sunday airtime.

Cox Media Group pulled around a dozen television stations from DirecTV-owned satellite and streaming platforms late Friday evening, after a contract between the two sides lapsed without a new agreement in place.
The decision to pull the channels came about a week after Cox Media began warning subscribers of DirecTV and U-Verse (formerly AT&T U-Verse) that they could lose access to one or more local broadcast stations if both sides were not able to reach a new agreement by Friday, February 2.
In a late-night e-mail to The Desk, a spokesperson for DirecTV said Cox Media exercised its right to force a programming blackout of its stations on DirecTV-owned platforms, which includes DirecTV via Internet, DirecTV Stream, DirecTV via Satellite and U-Verse.

The Super Bowl will air on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 11 and a Paramount+ rep confirmed to The Streamable how commercials will work on the platform.
One of the initial draws to streaming services was their lack of commercials. In the pre-streaming days, there really wasn’t any choice but to have whatever show or game you were watching interrupted by an ad for dish soap or a used car salesman telling you about the insane price at the dealership this weekend. Commercials were annoying and they were intrusive; that’s one of the reasons that so many people jumped at the opportunity to stream their favorite pieces of entertainment without commercial interruptions. But what about when the commercials are the entertainment? For many people, the Super Bowl is far more about commercials than football. So, in an age when many viewers will be watching the Big Game via streaming, that...
