The Men Who Made Zombie's Gore
Zombi Italiano (2011)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Of all the new featurettes on Blue Underground's special edition of ZOMBIE, this one here will probably be the most popular among fans because it has interviews with Gianetto De Rossi, Maurizio Trani and Gino De Rossi, the three men responsible for the zombies, gore and violence in the film. The featurette starts off with them talking that their job was to create an Italian DAWN OF THE DEAD and since they didn't have the budget to compete with the Romero film they had to try and get viewers in a different way. The idea was to create violence and zombies like nothing anyone had seen before and that's exactly what they did and over thirty-years later it's fair to say that they ended up creating some of the most famous images in horror history. A wide range of topics are covered but they all deal with the make-up effects. Some of the most interesting include the scene with the shark and zombie and after hearing how it was filmed it's rather amazing that nothing went wrong. There's also a very good bit about creating the "worm/eye zombie" and how this effect almost did go wrong. Of course, the biggest scene in the movie is the infamous eye/splinter scene and this too is discussed in good detail. It's clear that all three men are extremely impressed with the work they did on the film and it's even more obvious that they are all happy to be talking about the picture after all these years.
