The Golden Feather

When the fashion designer Wyck Theissens is programming his return to the fashion world, he is found murdered in his studio, stabbed by a pair of scissors. Theissens ruined his career when he was betrayed by a man that was interviewing him, and fired by his boss Guy Duval. His coming back was programmed to be a success, and the CBI agents investigate many suspects, among them the photographer Tony Redgrave.

"Red is the New Black" is another good episode of "The Mentalist". The criminal is found again by Patrick Jane, but his discovery in the end is the most intriguing part of the show. My vote is eight.

Best episode of Season 4

My overall rating of "The mentalist"'s Season 4: 4/10.

I am honestly surprised that an episode centred around the fashion world was so interesting and outshined every other episode in this season. The characters are all supercharismatic and motivations and roles are well-established. There is a legitimate sense of mystery with multiple valid suspects. As far as whodunnits go, this is a very solid one. Now, the Red John storyline worsens the episode a bit (which other reviewer of this show are you going to read ever saying that?) with its contrivedness. We're yet to be explained (if we ever will be) why Red John thinks it even remotely advantageous to stop playing dead, when only Patrick knows the truth otherwise, but cannot exactly share it, reducing his pool of available resources.

Still, the main plot is great and I'm rating off of that.

A major part of Red John's M.O. was missing

Warning: Spoilers
I cannot believe that the writers didn't have any of the characters in the final scene (mainly Jane, Lisbon and Darcy) mention there was no red face in blood. I recorded this episode and watched the final scene several times and there is no red face. Red John wants the red face seen before any dead body is seen.

Also, the choice of victim was weird. How did the morgue assistant wrong Red John? The serial killer enjoys taking on Patrick Jane. It's a game to him. One thing we never see is how Red John first felt when he learned that Jane was a consultant with the CBI? There's no way he could have seen that coming long after killing Jane's wife and daughter. In this episode, it would have made more sense if it had been Darcy who had been killed by Red John. After the dead body is found in the closet, I thought Jane or perhaps Lisbon would tell Darcy that the killer probably isn't Red John...no red face in blood and the body is wrapped in plastic. Red John is known to display his victims in a humiliating style. I can't say anything of this is surprising because the writers and producers were far away from mastering the mythology (Red John).
