Imaginative and beautifully crafted
TheLittleSongbird12 July 2013
Svatohor was one of those childhood favourites that held up just as well when recently rediscovered. It is very striking visually, you can tell that a lot of work and care went into every detail from the backgrounds to the character modelling. While there is something enchantingly beautiful about Svatohor's look and the atmosphere it creates, there is also a haunting and quite darkly eerie edge sometimes that made it even more nuanced and fascinating. Equally good are the music and story. The music score is one that fits each scene accordingly and never undermines it, there is an understated ethereal quality but also a sense of foreboding that is done in an equally subtle way. The story is very imaginative and holds the attention all the way through, getting further brownie points also for having an emotional impact. The characters, designed in a way that stands out among characters in puppetry animation, fit very well within the story, are simply written and are engaging. The narration is beautifully written and sincere in delivery. All in all, beautiful and imaginative, if you come across it on Youtube and love animation or Czech/Russian stories Svatohor is a very strong recommendation. 10/10 Bethany Cox
