"Write a book about what?!"
thisseatofmars19 September 2016
There's no plot to "Wrong Cops." It... just sort of unfolds, like a flower blooming, then withering, then rotting.

The official synopsis claims that "Wrong Cops" is set in a future where crime has been eradicated —but you'd never know this was "SF" by watching this film cold. "Wrong" looks like it was shot during a sunny day in New Jersey or someplace.

Due to this lack of structure, "Wrong" has a anemic, listless, aimless feel, which makes viewing tedious at times. Overall, however, the lack of structure (or maybe the structure I'm not picking up on) adds to the absurdity of the comedy, making it truly funny in places. Additionally, an otherworldly soundtrack of messy, electronic beats strings the movie together, giving it its own identity. I love the music. It makes this movie feel like it's set in another dimension. One character comments on it, suggesting that they may be in Hell: "We have invisible flames around us. You can't see them, but we all have invisible flames around us."

Marilyn Manson has a small role as a maligned high school kid and he's very funny. I've always respected him after watching his insightful interview on "Bowling for Columbine," and he seems like a cool guy, someone who doesn't take himself too seriously. That's the attitude of this film, too. You just laugh at the oddness of it all, and don't get annoyed or angry when the plot doesn't make sense. I've seen other user reviews refer to this as a movie for weed-smokers. I don't smoke pot, but I can see this as perfect pothead theatre.

Parts of the movie that drag tend to be scenes with Eric Wareheim and Arden Myrin. I don't know them from other work—both are comedians, apparently—but the scenes with them (especially Wareheim) kind of suck. Wareheim getting sprayed with pepper spray was slooooow and his comedy mannerisms seem to be him just over enunciating "n" and "t" sounds, like he's doing a cruel impression of a severely autistic adolescent. Props to Mark Burnham, however. He's got real charisma as the bullheaded lead, and the guy playing "Sunshine" looks a lot like Edward Norton. That's funny to me, somehow.

Recommended.

Dumb cops, no plot, good stuff
drjacobgrayson3 February 2022
Like a more criminalistic and corrupt Reno 911 mixed with a stoner movie. There are a lot of unfunny parts but somehow that makes the movie better. I'd be interested to know if there was any script at all and, if so, how much of it actually made it into the film.

Another perspective
redzz26 December 2013
I'm gonna keep it brief.

I got high, watched this and laughed. I laughed at its weird, incoherent plot line and it's weird, strange characters that did weird, crude things. The review before this mentions a "stilted dialogue" which I think is an accurate description...but in a good way.

This is a very niche sort of humour - not for everyone granted. I'm not comparing it to Freddie Got Fingered, but if you're the type who 'got' that film, you'll understand this one - which I suppose is not reading into too much into it and just effin' laugh at it instead.

The cinematography was definitely a plus as well. Not groundbreaking, but actually well considered for this type of film.

All in all, its not to be taken seriously. This is someone just simply playing around and having fun.

The whole endeavor still has no-no plan
StevePulaski29 December 2013
"This stinks of Germany!," hollers Duke (Mark Burnham), a pudgy, crooked cop, who is one of the many characters in Quentin Dupieux's latest film Wrong Cops. The context involves a shady figure named David Delores Frank (Marilyn Manson) giving Duke a taste of the new-age, Dubstep-esque kind of music the kids are listening to today. The scene is an accurate summation of everything Wrong Cops includes - quirky characters, inane little vignettes, random bits of humor, comedic laxness, and bumping house music housed inside a seventy-eight minute runtime.

This is Dupieux's third feature, his first being the widely-scene sleeper-hit Rubber, involving a killer tire, Wrong, a damning film about a man who wanders into the strangest of circumstances while trying to find his lost dog, and now Wrong Cops, the sorta-kinda followup to his last endeavor. The film continues the line of absurdist, surreal comedy, which is really hit and miss in the long run. However, Wrong Cops has probably more hits than any of Dupieux's previous features. Rubber was great fun for about fifty minutes - the problem was it was eighty minutes long - and Wrong felt like a screen writing exercise involving vapid characters and asinine circumstances clobbered together.

Wrong Cops, similar to Wrong in several ways, flies by the seat of its pants, possessing a vague plot that can be summarized in a sentence and includes numerous vignettes on its many characters. The plotlessness helps Dupieux communicate every cockamamie thing he wants to in a relatively short amount of time, so calling the film a burden on somebody's behalf is quite the overstatement. The story revolves around a band of bumbling cops who accidentally shoot an innocent person and must dispose of his body. Now that the plot is out of the way, the story largely focuses on the antics involving Duke, a hilariously vulgar officer who deals bags of marijuana in secrecy by handing the customer the product inside a dead rat to avoid drawing attention. Duke, however, is at kind of a loss, trying to retrieve money from a customer (Steve Little) who continues to buy more and more marijuana without having the money. Another noteworthy character is Renato (Eric Wareheim), a dopey cop who barely gets by when he's left to his own wit. The only cop who seems to have sense is Shirley (Arden Myrin), who works closely with Duke.

To begin with, the film feels like a series of fifteen minute long skits fit for the lineup of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, strung together in a halfway coherent seventy-eight minute film. The spontaneity and unpredictability of this project can be commended as a rather risky effort by Dupieux but the result feels somewhat incomplete and lacking seeing as there really is no continuity in the film whatsoever. Furthermore, the anti-humor schtick is still wonky, once again leaving me at a point of confusion, as I don't know what the humor is trying to be other than as weird as can be because, as far as I can tell, the entire movement doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

Wrong Cops, however, is entertaining, albeit disjointed. Aside from the style of humor and situational weirdness that was clearly present in Wrong, the same goes for the easy-on-the-eyes, washed out cinematography, whose color-scheme consists of faded yellow, sky blue, and plain white to make for an always beautiful look. Quentin Dupieux is easily one of the damnedest new filmmakers, and I technically haven't really liked one of his films yet, but his style, efforts to blend contemporary surrealism with comedy, along with persistency into throwing characters and plots together for "no reason" begs to be explored, for it seems genuinely fresh and unique in an age where so much isn't.

Starring: Mark Burnham, Steve Little, Marilyn Manson, Éric Judor, Eric Wareheim, and Arden Myrin. Directed by: Quentin Dupieux.

An absurd comedy for those with a very particular type of humor
Chaos1928-125 May 2014
This movie really wasn't for me, and I think that will be the case for most people. Those who do like this style may really enjoy it, but it's definitely not for your typical film fan. The movie has no real structure, plot, character development or anything, but at the same time it doesn't want to. It is totally absurdest. Nothing is believable, it has an odd feel the whole time and none of the characters are even remotely believable. Like I said before however, it doesn't want to. Its not that the movie tried to be a good movie and failed, it just didn't really try to be a movie at all. It's just a bunch of ridiculous things going on with ridiculous characters. For those who enjoy that type of thing, it may be very funny, but I didn't know what to expect when I started watching the film and it definitely wasn't what I was looking for. There was no story to really follow or get into, and since there's no real character development it isn't able to make any kind of humor based on the characters. I will say that a couple times I did laugh at just how ridiculous some of the dumb jokes were (not dumb as in bad, just purposefully random and absurd thing), but there just wasn't enough substance to the movie to leave me walking away thinking that I enjoyed the time I had just spent. I think this could have done better as a short film online or something so people could be more understanding and open to it, but since I found it on Netflix as a normal movie in the comedy section, I was expecting more. If you like adult swim and that type of totally random and absurd humor you will probably enjoy this movie. If you don't like that and are looking for a real movie with some meat to it whether comedy or not, you should probably skip over this one.

The Trailer is an Honest Depiction of this Movie
panaceamedia18 October 2022
...including saying it's not really a movie. No one with the last name Manson has ever lied.

So, if you enjoy the trailer, you should enjoy whatever this is. If not, well, then skip it.

Bizarre antics and dark humor abound.

One character spends most of time making a techno track that everyone hates. A dying man improves it. The studio might not like it, but I think it's a banger. (or is "it slaps" the current term?)

All the characters look to be having a good time and fully commit to the absurdity.

Nihilistic cops with no empathy... oops, oh sorry, I switched tabs and starting commenting on a real life story. But wait, these cops are also like that, but funny. And more honest. Not likeable though (intentionally), so don't expect a Reno 911 or Supertroopers. But similar vibes.

Hiding drugs in dead rats > hiding drugs in dead fish. Not sure why, but just go with it. Wonder if that part was Wareheim's idea.

Many delightful cameos including the underappreciated Ray Wise. Dude is boss. He needs a Walk of Fame star. His presence makes everything better.

I've rated movies higher that I don't really want to watch again. I'd watch this again. Make of that what you will.

The least believable thing about this movie, aside from the literal walking dead guy, is the intense shame a character feels being outed as a former homosexual? It's 2013 in San Francisco. No one cares. Every resident there in the past decade has at least dabbled in homoerotic behavior, except maybe perhaps Candance Cameron, although her wolfpack seemed ready for some hanky-panky.

Wrong Movie
technolady-me24 December 2013
At the time of my writing this review this stinker of a movie has 352 ratings on IMDb and strangely enough not one single written review so I will be the first. It's difficult to understand how 352 people rated this horrid film a (current) 6.5 without them all being all contracted out from Bombay. The jokes do not even fall flat as much as they can not even be recognized as jokes. This movie is not so much comedy as it is a tragedy ... a slow ... boring ... horrid tragic parody of a film. Stilted dialog and "jokes" that only an eight year old could possibly find funny - if said eight year old were turned on by flaccid jokes about marijuana, murder, transvestism and rape. A plot that I would not describe as contrived merely because the word "contrived" could possibly denote that someone actually put some thought into its development. I see several places on the web that compare this film to either "Police Academy" or Reno 911 - rest assured that this film is not comparable to either as to do so would carry the expectation of the film containing either humor or likable characters, neither of which are to be found anywhere in "Wrong Cops".

I'm giving the film an additional star because the cinematography was actually rather surprisingly adequate. I suggest not wasting your time watching this poor excuse for a film school project.

You'll love it unless you don't
littleiceagerecords4 January 2014
Quentin Dupieux's films are not for everyone, but if you're looking for a very fun, absurdist film you're going to love Wrong Cops.

I can't understand why other reviewers hate on this film so much. I watched it and laughed my ass off and had a great time. It's my favorite film of the past year. It's deadpan absurdity, a sequence of slightly the surreal encounters of a police force that does more harm than good, who spend their time selling drugs, refusing to investigate crimes, and composing house music. Dupieux's films collectively are like a breath of fresh air in a stodgy and self-important film culture.

The plot of Wrong Cops is loose and it almost feels like a piece written for the stage. It's all about the slightly twisted encounters - from scene to scene there is no way to predict where the film will take you, and once it takes you there there's no way to know exactly where you are. This kind of mischievous disorientation can be very fun if you just let go and take the ride.

If you like David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, etc. - films that go over the top with their surrealism and absurdity, films that never feel quite comfortable and familiar yet which you can't look away from, you will love this film. If you're looking for standard fare, just don't watch it. It will probably make you angry.

With potential but way under expectations
maros6128 February 2014
I would label the genre of Wrong Cops as cynical and absurd dramedy. It had its moments, but couldn't properly fill the length of the title. The writing wasn't bad though. I liked some creative ideas and approaches from the writers, and also some of the plot twist were well done. "Cops gone bad" is a potent concept though, which should've been exploited much better here. I understand the movie intentionally wanted to look independent and different - which succeeded, but I must say it had extremely boring and entertaining moments and overall it was uneasy to watch it through. Kind of movie you can pass and you won't miss much - unless you're in a mood for very unconventional flick.

A Potential Cult Classic with Great Black Humor
blaynebittner12 April 2014
I like to avoid spoilers in my reviews. This movie is very short, but you'll remember every moment of it. The music is extremely obscure, but draws you in and makes the movie by the end.

It was great to see that the cast and crew didn't take themselves too seriously when making this film. Its not meant to be completely realistic, nor run for Academy Awards.

If you are offended by extreme sexual jokes, and people treating each other horrifically in bizarre social environments, then this movie is not for you.

The film starts off awkward, which sets the pace of the entire movie. The acting is not the most amazing, but its hilarious.

I've watched this movie at least 10 times since I got a copy of it. I've re-watched it with friends who share the same type of humor.

There is a gore scene that's quite disturbing, yet darkly hilarious. I mention that as a warning for people who couldn't stomach it, its quite psychotic. I won't ruin it for people who want to enjoy it.

This movie is best watched knowing almost nothing about it before you see it. Its best for when you don't have time for the usual 1hr45-2hr run time movies that are the norm these days. Wrong Cops is a movie you should also be in the mood for the first time you see it.

There's a lot of people who will hate this movie. Every joke is pure black humor. It seems to take influence from Reno 911 and Super Troopers. It is, however, much less slapstick.

This is the best review I can do without giving away anything, or spoiling anything. I rate it a 9/10 for the category of Black Humor Cult Classics. While its not old yet, people may still enjoy this 20 years from now.

The storyline is very unpredictable. A lot of the characters are unlikeable as people, but enjoyable to observe.

Although being unrealistic at various points, there are a lot of scenes that hit a little "too close to home" for people who have had a rough past. To enjoy this movie, separate yourself from the situations completely and thank heavens you don't live in the same neighborhood as these people.

Please remember that a protagonist doesn't have to be a good person. There are plenty of books and movies where the lead characters are straight up villains. The entire movie is quite amoral, which helps make this a unique little film. Its original, memorable, and not for everyone.

I hope this helps you decide if this is the movie for you tonight.

what the he'll was that?
Cokeoverpepsi12313 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sorry, but I honesty think this was the worse movie I have ever sat through. Nothing in this movie makes ANY sense. Wtf happened to the dying guy? Its like the whole movie hes in, but forgotten about in the end. And the bag of money CLEARLY is more than 13,000. The money is by no means a big deal, just saying.I wanted to turn the movie off, but I just had to know what the he'll happens that it got such good reviews. I'm still waiting, but there is no movie left. I've seen worse acting and camera wasn't bad, except for some transitions, but the movie is like an idea you have and you try to put it all together but cant. Idk. It wasn't for me but I'm glad other enjoyed it.

Worst movie ever.
dylboz24 July 2014
A complete disaster. Pointless, awful, irritating, stupid. No laughs, just an unrelenting crap-fest. You might accidentally watch it all the way through like I did, just waiting for something to make sense. But don't. Because it won't. And you will resent it, deeply, in the worst way. You're better off watching the Dexter finale again. There are no likable characters, no believable plot lines, nothing good. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. To say I hate this movie, and that I am deeply embarrassed for many of the otherwise decent actors who, for God knows what reasons appeared in this film, would be the understatement of the century. This is not a movie. It is a really bad, terribly unfunny joke.

Disappointing
richardpoore7 February 2015
I was going to attempt an actual review of this, but well brought up by my mum, I was reminded of the saying "If you can't say anything nice"... but I'll break my rule for this gem.

The directing lacked - well - everything, the acting reminded me of a third grade play, perhaps in part due to the simply awful script which did absolutely nothing to pull the viewer in. I don't mind innuendo and crude one liners but it has to be done well and this felt forced and tired - a poor imitation of decades past. The editing was perhaps the only area where I could give any praise what so ever, however not for the actual cut but more for the work that must have gone into fixing what I can only imagine was a train wreck.

Not only do I want my 82 minutes back, I would also like assurances that under no circumstances will these people ever be allowed to make a movie again.

Doesn't try to be anything
martin-461-37513512 April 2014
8 out of 10 is quite a high rating, normally reserved for great films. This isn't a great film but it is a great comedy. It's great because it doesn't try to be funny or really even try to be a story. The concept and idea are strong and funny enough. So many good ideas are ruined because they try to be something and completely fail (anchorman 2, for instance). This is not a mainstream comedy by any shout, it's fresh, subtle and very smooth. Aesthetically and intellectually. This is very brave film making, it doesn't ponder to mainstream acclaim and for that it holds it's integrity. This film simply is what it is. If you like Eastbound and down or Green Wing then i advise you to give it a go, if your cup of tea is 'how i met your mother' then forget it. This isn't for you. I'd actually like to see this as a TV series.

It is definitely very weird! AND it is NOT easily "digestible". It's OFF. It's unique though, in a wrong footed, yet fascinating way...
imseeg11 January 2020
Director Quentin Dupieux is known for his unique, BUT very estranging "comedies". NOT NOT NOT suited for anyone desiring to see a straight comedy. You have been warned, because Quentin Dupieux' movies are GUARANTEED to make you wonder WHAT THE HECK is happening. His movies/stories are CONSTANTLY wrongfooting the audience. That's it's charm and it's definitely quite unique. I love SOME of his work, but in this movie he did not achieve a good balance between wrong footing the audience and simultanuously telling a good story with likeable characters.

Better watch another great Dupieux movie called "Wrong" (2012). That story/movie is more easily "digestible" for the inexperienced viewer of these sort of extremely weird stories from director Dupieux, because the characters in it are more true to life, however weird they still are. Quentin Dupieux' movies are only to be recommended for a select art house movie audience, but those select few will most certainly be surprised and (probably be) delighted with a unique experience...

I loved it so much
SillyGayBoy14 December 2015
This movie is both hilarious and ridiculous. It is totally weird and insane and totally funny at the same time.

I was so happy when I watched this movie. I bet stoners would love this movie too, just seems like something they would. It has the ability to surprise and be funny and fun and be totally weird at the same time.

The characters are doofuses but they are wonderful doofuses that get into ridiculous shanannigans with each other.

They do stuff that is inappropriate but twist it around to make it funny and I like how they do it. I don't give spoilers just see it. It made me so happy.

Utter waste of time
preciousjemma28 December 2014
Decided to watch this due to Manson's role as I enjoy him as a musician, actor in Sons of Anarchy and general human being, and was sorely disappointed. Acting from all actors was shoddy, script was lazy, not a single character was well-developed or likable and I would literally rather watch Twilight than this garbage again. If the filming style was supposed to feel 'indie', the low-budget feel was certainly there. What's up with the weird depth of field and focal points? Looks like the producers couldn't get the camera to focus on occasion. The female character is unrealistic and a terrible representation of police, and women in general, her character was just irritating and senseless. Despite Manson's 'cute' little character, it was literally the worst film I've endured this year

Pathetic
ulric993 May 2014
Based on other reviews I expected better of this show. Sadly I was disappointed.

Poor acting, direction, dialog and script made a disaster of a movie

I am in awe of how this steaming pile could be made... Who fronted the money to make the movie ? I'd be after a refund because the outlay won't be recouped by cinema ticket sales and DVD may not even make up the cost.

I'm also amazed that the writer / director didn't ask to have Alan Smithee used on the credits to avoid future embarrassment.

Don't bother with this one, nothing to see here, move along.

No redeeming qualities in any part of this film - complete waste of time
dwight-linden16 June 2014
I have never felt so ripped off and disgusted after walking out of a movie theater. They stole both my money and my time. I can't fathom how anybody gave this film a rating above 2 (except for the plausible exception of the guy that got high before watching this filth).

The movie appears to be the work of an incompetent poseur freshman film student trying to make some type of avant-garde and eclectic movie which avoided the stereotypes of Hollywood and standard cinema guidelines. So much of this film was not only non-sequitur (in an unintentional way), but was filled with outdated, offensive "humor" which lacked any punchline. There are so many inconsistencies in the story line and no closure to key themes in the movie. (What happened to the dying guy who was in much of the film? He was just forgotten at the end).

It appeared like the director watched a series of early-80's art-house films (Liquid Sky, Videodrome, etc) to be "inspired" to meld quirky music with jumping from scene to scene without much plot or consistency. Either that, or he watched a series of American police comedies (Police Academy, Reno 911) and did not understand that there are several jokes in those which are context-based or have some type of pop-culture reference. This film seemed to want to have such jokes but lacked any pop-culture connection for anchoring any of their attempts at humor.

This movie not only falls flat but could only be a cult classic for those whose only method of sitting through it are taking drugs and entering an altered state of reality.

The Russian connection of this film is obvious in the way they portray the police. I can only see that the inspiration was transplanting corrupt Moscow police mentality into LA and think that the audience will have both the cultural references for both of these environments. Even with this cultural context I felt completely violated by this film and can't get back either the time or the money I wasted on this worthless garbage.

Worth to watch
oilcake-274-51222927 December 2013
I gave it 8 out of 10, because it was too short for me, I didn't want it to ends. I really enjoyed this movie, it's really funny and I've laughed a lot. I like good movies though, but, this movie is something different from my point of view, it's not good, it's not bad, it's something that makes you forget about anything else but the movie, good actors, good play, everything is good. I've watched it in one breath. The scenario and director's play is unordinary, that's what appreciated. I wish there will be more that kind. Anyway, the movie is for soothing your brain, not the serious one, but for fun and entertainment. Better to watch with a good company. Don't listen to others, don't listen to me, just see it, you must have your own point of view.

just plain awful
dalanik11 May 2014
I went to see this film after checking the IMDb rating. It had like 6.something which is mostly watchable film. I expected at least light comedy and went to see it with my wife. The warning bell began to ring right after the opening titles started. The letters, fonts, it was all indicating something low budget. I said to myself I must be imagining things and we went on. After 10 minutes of watching this CRAP, my wife just stopped watching and went out. I managed to last until like 25 minutes into this CRAP and it is such a waste of time. I will never understand how a CRAP like this can get such a high mark? It deserves like 1 or max 2 stars, it is just plain AWFUL. The acting is awful, the characters are shallow; they tried to copy Tarantino but failed miserably. The camera is not THAT bad. The music is totally awful, it is like some crap synthesizer music from the 1980's and it really annoys one. This is one of the WORST films (if one can call it that) that I have (started) watching. STAY AWAY, it deserves 1 max 2 stars, the ranking is way too high. The producers must have bribed all friends and relatives to vote for this piece of crap.... STAY AWAY!!!

My favourite film and I don't know way
JakJak462 May 2017
This films speak to to my love of nonsensical dry slightly dark humour. This films progression and self-reference to director himself quite evident. It also coincides with the directors personality, which is don't take me seriously and let me create. The other part of this film makes it my favourite is this character's. Mark Burnham in my books does this great job in playing the serious and stubborn depressed looking cop in this absurd kind of circumstance. his reactions, or lack of, make some great awkward cringey moments but I just love and it makes me laugh. The supporting cast do a great job of adding to the absurdity of the situation. Normally exacerbating it or having to deal with Mark Burnham's character actions/reactions.

Weird, very weird
room1029 October 2015
This movie is almost like a comic version of "Bad Lieutenant".

Directed by Quentin Dupieux, a.k.a. Mr. Oizo, who also directed "Wrong (2012)", so you should know how weird this movie can get.

Like "Wrong", this movie has a strange style, strange story line, strange cinematography (especially those sudden and random zooms), strange writing. Everything about it is strange. But it's funnier than "Wrong".

And if that's not weird enough, you should see the mini-guest (almost cameo) role by Marylin Manson - the movie is worth watching for that scene alone (clue: An almost unrecognizable Marylin Manson without makeup, plays an insecure teenager who listens to electronic music).

There are also two cameos by Jonathan Lajoie, one of them as rapper "E=MC Vagina" (you might miss it if you blink).

A lesson in delivering subpar comedy.
Wanderlust_Hinton5 February 2015
Initially, I was blown away by the stellar performances from supporting actors Eric Judor, Eric Wareheim and Marilyn Manson. Synth was an amazing choice for the soundtrack however that doesn't carry the movie out of the enormous hole it's dug itself into. The content could have easily fit into a 25 minute slot. At a gratuitous 83 minutes the humorous moments are very few and far in-between. Taking the liberty to be shot like an art-house film Quentin Dupieux has created a perfect storm of bland comedy. 'Wrong Cops' tries too hard to become a cult classic like 'The Room' yet barely achieves mediocrity. To sum the movie up in one resounding word, "meh".

Sketchy, episodical, absurd

Pretty sketchy episodical kind of movie. I liked the non linear style of story telling, but dosent really gives the effect that quientin tarantinos "pulp fiction" gave me. Some comedy works, some I didn't find much funny. The sketchy characters were kind of ok, not much of the comedy worked for me. There is no much of a plot, maybe they just wanted to show a vibe. The music is very groovy, I liked the songs. The movie has its moments, especially i liked the way it started. The way they introduced a cop selling drugs filled inside a rat, that way compelling and intresting. But the movie dosent pick up in pace with these characters.
