Despite the Strange Name, A Fairly Amusing Parody
gavin694223 February 2016
An evil wizard, Lord Tensley (James Marsters), seeks the hand and heart of the beautiful princess, Lady Ennogard. When she refuses, he locks her away and releases a deadly dragon, which he controls, to terrorize the land. He vows that, until she accepts his love, his dragon will destroy all who dare display any sign of love throughout the kingdom.

As I understand it, this movie began with crowd funding, which was successful, and under the name "Dragon Warriors" went around to various festivals and received generally positive feedback. When picked up by Momentum, it received a name change. Exactly why is unclear, but maybe it was a legal thing because of the RPG of the same name. I am not a fan of the new name, because it makes the movie sound of lower quality than it actually is. But maybe others disagree.

There are some cheesy special effects, but this actually may be appropriate for how silly the movie is. While at first I was doubtful, it surprised me with its charm and clever writing. In contrast to the effects, the costumes and makeup are really good. One of the main characters is an orc, and his makeup (or mask) is as good as any Hollywood film.

What the film amounts to is a very strange parody. Someone else compared it to a mix between "Lord of the Rings" and "Princess Bride". I disagree, but they may not be far off. The nods to "Rings" are clear, and there are more than a few "Star Wars" jokes. But they are actually clever, rather than hackneyed like on "Big Bang Theory". You can tell the writer really gets it. When the damsel in distress says, "Help me if you want to hold me, you're my only hope," I was in love with the movie. It was at that point I knew they were really having fun and even ready to poke fun at themselves for having that fun.

Interestingly, while everyone else is tongue-in-cheek, Marsters plays it straight in most scenes. This provides an excellent balance, and actually makes him an even more important character than just being "the bad guy". He is also the one who ends up grounding the humor. Compare him to Adam Johnson as Ramicus, who steals the show in every scene. I have not seen much of Johnson's work, but he has excellent deadpan comic timing and delivery.

Whether or not this movie will appeal to everyone, I do not know. But I feel the nerds of the world will get a chuckle. Again, when compared to "Big Bang Theory", you can tell the people involved in this movie really get the culture and are not trying to make fun of the fans or reduce it to stereotypes. There is a true intelligence at work here that has to be admired.

Not high brow comedy but not low brow either
EdWrite4 March 2016
For a low budget movie with questionable cgi this is a slow burner that does catch fire.

Where this wins over similar competitors is its awareness of its audience. Its smart humour is based in solid foundations of its watchers references whether it is Star Wars or Lord of the Rings (OK I gave it away), it's a nerd movie. Still with solid actors like Marsters, Johnston as protagonists and even Denton who projects himself well beyond some excellent Orc makeup effects this film is in safe hands. Luke Perry I would not have recognised in a thousand years does OK but is overshadowed by his contemporaries who provide energetic and articulate voices for their roles.

I would admit the guys get all the best lines and the female characters are not as well served in this area. A bit more flesh on their characters bones would have been appreciated. The pacing of the movie however was well done and the low budget cgi effects for the backdrops reminded me of the old Dr Who green screen, which to my mind added to the charm of this movie.

While this film is no "Princess Bride", If you appreciate intelligent movies that don't take themselves too seriously then you might just have found a little gem.

Loved it!
ladybug25352 December 2016
Thoroughly enjoyed this film despite the cheap CGI, but after all, this is a low budget Kickstarter project--it struggled with funding and could be deemed successful by simply completing the project. The effects did fit the tone of the movie but it would be even better to see the film come back in a "new and improved" version thanks to an influx of cash. Sometimes the poor effects are a distraction--but for the most part they are adequate for propelling the story--and in some places they successfully play off the cheesy effects to comic relief.

Most of the actors--certainly the main cast played their parts well, with special recognition to our "hero" and the villain (you will recognize them both). Special mention goes to the Ork who managed to express himself well under tons of makeup and prosthetics, and without speaking a word. Charmingly funny, the film lovingly lampoons the "Sword and Sorcery" genre--and as other reviewers have mentioned there are clear nods to "Star Wars", "Princess Bride" and others. You'll know 'em when you see 'em.

Overall, genuinely funny without resorting to crude humor, or swearing as humor, or even the usual T&A. I wouldn't hesitate to let kids watch, but there's plenty for the grown ups to enjoy (I would not categorize this as a kid's movie, but there's little to object to either). Probably due to editing choices, as usual in this kind of film, some bits work better than others, More time, more money probably would have helped.

The story is pretty straight forward, and loaded with recognizable tropes that serve to support and push forward the humor and the plot. While there is nothing totally original here, it is put together well enough and is just original enough to keep it fresh rather than just a simple rehash or cliché. Yes there are flaws (some of the dialogue could have been tweaked), as you'll find with all very low budget films, but it is well put together for the money, and you can see the cast enjoyed themselves--while a few actors were a bit uneven, for the most part the acting was well above what you tend to see on this kind of budget--even when those bottom of the barrel budgets manage to lure in recognizable professionals.

Definitely recommended. Amusing, recognizable yet reasonably original-- it should give you a satisfying escape.

Too long and takes itself too seriously
abelhawk23 July 2022
I've seen worse low-budget movies, but the problem with this film is its pacing. It has some funny parodic humor in it, but it also spends too much time trying to be a serious fantasy film so it ends up being cheesy and cringey.

If its duration was cut in half by cutting out dead air, some of the more redundant and silly conversations, and just making things happen more quickly, you'd have a pretty fun comedy where you wouldn't notice the excessive green screening, low-budget costumes and props, and fake CGI.

Instead, you have a film that's funny for about 20 minutes, and then you start feeling embarrassed for wasting your time waiting for the plot develop among tacky banter and a clichéd plot.

I think this could've been more successful as a YouTube movie, but the fact that this went all the way to a feature length film on Amazon just makes it unclear who the intended audience is.

Let's be honest...
marcmorris-817-63971421 February 2024
You don't watch this movie for the story. Or the special effects. You watch it because of the stupid humor, tongue in cheek jabs at fantasy tropes.

Go into this movie with the lowest expectations possible and you'll enjoy it.

The really bad green screening, panning and outright over the top acting are part of this spoof charm.

It's apparent they spent their budget on the single Orc character as it was the closest thing to B-grade they get. It felt like some college students got stoned and made the movie in film school. Probably not too far from the mark as I learned after the movie it was a kickstarter with a $216k budget.

I enjoy a stupid level comedy on occasion. Movies like Kung-Pow, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, and even Your Highness to name a few.

This movie falls short of making the list of my "desire to rewatch it one day" (in its entirety). I however will probably pull up certain scenes just for the laugh.

The story - 2/10 The score - 2/10 The comedy - 5/10 The special effects - 3/10.

Hotties - 8/10

Smoke a bowl, lower your expectations and watch the movie. I promise it's at least better than sitting through a grade school play.

You've Got to be Kidding
tjsteiger8 November 2015
I went to the showing of this film at the Chicago Comedy Film festival last evening and I must say I couldn't understand how this film ever got listed as a comedy. Except for some nipple humor and marrying your cousin, it wasn't that funny. It seemed delighted to borrow heavily from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Princess Bride, which made it way too predictable and trivial.

The only funny thing about this was that the film was it was shown on an XBox machine at this theater and I'm sure the projectionist union loved that.

Skip this film all together. Watch the Princess Bride instead. That's funny.

don't bother
ken-atkins-320-7581523 March 2016
just don't bother a waste of 15 minutes of my life. that's how long I gave it. it was bad really bad. the film shouldn't get any play anywhere. james marsters shame on you. naff. poor. terrible. a joke. makes me nostalgic for poor films made by asylum.it makes me want to go throw up, I am having to write so much its taking me longer to write this review due to IMDb policy of 10 lines than I spent watching this piece of shat. not sure what else to say apart from again do not bother its not worth it at all. I have nothing else to say but still need to write as still not hit my 10 lines.still not long enough, I am beginning to think IMDb wants blood from a stone as there is nothing that can be added for such a poor useless, pointless, diabolical, waste of space film.

A fun, silly fantasy movie done right.
silverblades9 April 2016
I picked this movie up out of curiosity, having never heard of it before. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The story, while simple, was lighthearted and enjoyable. And the characters were likable and fun. Many of the references and sight-gags used had a Mel Brooks quality to them and fit the tone of the movie and never distracted from the movie its self. The CGI, while not blockbuster quality, was decent. The practical effects and make-up were very well done. The only flaw I could personally find with it was the use of Blue screen, which was clearly used because of budgetary reasons, could be a bit distracting at times, but also gave it a somewhat stylized look. I'd recommend Dudes and Dragons to fans of Fantasy and Spoof movies, and players of D&D.

Entertaining and silly.
kyla-723021 November 2021
This was a fun little film poking fun at fantasy tropes.

I enjoyed the characters and the dialogue and laughed at lots of the gags.

I've watched lots of low budget movies and wondered how they possibly got the cash. I see this one was funded with a kickstarter, which I think is pretty neat.

Appallingly bad
Leofwine_draca11 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
DRAGON WARRIORS is an appallingly bad comedy fantasy flick that seems to have been shot on a green screen throughout. The story features constant poor-quality dragons and monsters animated by rubbishy CGI, alongside damsels in distress, heroic knights, and supporting comedy relief characters. The actors given the most overblown performances ever, performances which would be considered over the top for your average provincial pantomime. Poor old James Marsters ends up being relentlessly hammy years on from his turn in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, while Luke Perry looks old and haggard. DRAGON WARRIORS truly is a film only for the sadomasochists among us.

I don't see how anyone could possibly give this steaming pile of crap anything more than 1 or 2 stars! The effects are cheesy, the acting is kindergarten and they must have had a budget of a few hundred dollars! There are absolutely no redeeming qualities to this garbage!

Low Budget Imitation of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
thess-9554112 November 2017
Very low budget imitation of the general idea of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" from the 1990s, but the special effects are worse than from the 1990s. Bad comedy with dragons and monsters. The actors are wearing cheap fake looking wigs with fake picture scenery in the background. In one scene an ugly devil looking male monster and one of the main male characters pretended to be in love like they were going to get married. At this point the stupidity became a little too much for me. Although some viewers might think it's very funny.

Slightly entertaining in a bad kind of way if you're into that, but not very "good" in any real way.

Horrible, 1960s Special Effects
bjonesjr-photos26 April 2017
I found this film virtually unwatchable due to its cheesy effects. As far as I could tell, the entire movie was filmed in front of a green screen, with no sets whatsoever. It's difficult to get into a movie when all you can think about is how the actors look as if they are about to start presenting the local weather report.

By far the worst movie i have ever seen...
pearcejeremyl20 June 2017
Idk what dragon con is but if this won the best film award i couldn't imagine how horrible the ones that didn't win are. Was dragon con created by the same people as the movie? I cant wrap my head around the fact that anyone ever has the slightest interest in this crap. I have never commented on anything on IMDb and went out of my way to write this in hopes that someone doesn't accidentally cross paths with this siht and ruin their day like mine was. Absolutely no comedy at all not even one slight attempt at a dad joke or nothing and the worst acting i have ever encountered. If i ever decide to go on a killing spree it'll defiantly start with the people that made this and the ones who gave good reviews. there's no question i will go down in history as a hero. I no siht 100% canceled my showtime subscription because of this. Who the fcuk allowed this happen? Showtime has gone to siht and this was the fly on the pile for me. What tf has happened to America. I can usually find something entertaining in any movie but fcuk me this was bad. Really bad! Im going to take 2 showers and god knows what kind of drugs to try to erase this crap out of my brain. I haven't drank in 2 months until about 8 min into this. I had a feeling it was a good time to start erasing my memory but it was too late already. I've never cut a movie short cause i think its only fair to watch the whole thing before i form my opinion but this one made me rethink my entire life. It literally hurt to watch i got a headache and the worst anxiety to the point i almost threw up. Im so baffled that these people still have jobs. If any suicide bombers are looking for some work i would suggest a visit to the fat nasty neck beards garage studio that made this. I would imagine the only good thing to ever come out of that studio will be the shredded body parts of its employees in a glorious blast of entertainment justice. I would rather watch my mom drown in mayonnaise than to even know this exists. Stop making movies seriously. Please just stop

Warning: Spoilers
Kinda stupid, but overall not a bad way to kill a couple of hours.

That being said, all characters like Camilan & (from Guardians of the Galaxy) Starlord (Chris Pratt) should be strung up by their ankles & hit with a stick until their goodies fall out!!! They ruin everything & have no redeeming qualities & nearly spoil an entire movie!

SO many great laughs!
indeedy19 November 2016
I saw this at Dragon Con, and have been looking forward to watching it again ever since.

This isn't a movie to watch all alone on your computer. It's a movie to invite a bunch of like-minded fantasy film fans over to watch while playing drinking games.

Fantasy tropes abound, as well as out-and-out spoofs of films you should know - and probably do.

It's an indie film, not a big budget affair, but if you are a fan of indies, this one is worth your while.

Name that original... and have a great time.

Sacrificial Virgins need love too
nogodnomasters15 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Two brothers are tasked to kill the Dolvarnög, a fire breathing dragon that kills people who are in love. The bothers are polar opposites. Camilan (Maclain Nelson) is a hairless blond who speaks modified Middle Earth English. He is in love with an elf (Clare Niederpruem) a wedding which his parents forbid. Ramicus lacks the social graces, is hairy, has an orc (Eric Denton) sidekick, and is our voice of modern reason as he questions the ways of the Middle Earth. Camilan has a Samwise sidekick named Samton (Jake Van Wagoner).

The film spoofs LOTR and well as a few scenes from "Titanic" and "Star Wars." The names of the individuals were a laugh and indeed I has howling as the film began. Unfortunately like all satires of the genre, the comedy drops off as there seems to be a need to front load all the good material. Unlike LOTR this is almost entirely filmed in front of a green screen with fake backgrounds making this look like a western or 50's film. Considering this is a spoof, that is not a bad thing. One of the better LOTR spoofs. I liked it more than overly crude "Your Highness."

No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Great popcorn comedy
wabooradley14 April 2017
One afternoon I blindly stumbled across the last 10 minutes of this film, and those 10 minutes (plus the post-film "bloopers") made me chuckle so much that I recorded the next full airing. This proved a great move!

"Dudes and Dragons" (or "Dragon Warriors", as it is also known) is simply slapstick comedy done well - lots of pratfalls and wisecracks that are certain to tickle your funny bone, provided you have one. It isn't the beneficiary of a rich budget, but the costumes are decent and the acting more than passable. If you just want to spend a lighthearted two hours snorting out your beer at one joke after another, you could do worse than this one.

What's not to love?
kimchicash6 August 2018
Was scrolling through Prime and searched for fantasy films to get up to date on fantasy films, and saw this and Orcs! This film did Not disappointment, and made me an Adam Johnson fan- love his humor. The film is low budget, but so what? Does a film need to cost $100md to have a great plot and solid acting? The story is classic, with nods to LOTR, Star Wars, and more. Many scenes had me rolling with laughter! Excellent writing, timing and directing! Will watch again and again!

Hilarious
milesmwr-4014330 March 2016
Laugh out loud comedy, action, glory, DND, love. Everything you would expect from a true fan made DND COMEDY movie I love it. Join Rammacus & Co. on his journey not only to conquer this epic quest but also family matters, and matters of the heart(mathematically speaking). First glance it seems a bit rough, I had to rewatch the first 10 minutes as I was not paying attention. The green screen threw me off once and awhile, only reason I give it a 9 is because every shot is literally green screen, second run through was better 10/10! I picked up on more of the references I think my brain was still dealing with the last one and they would go over my head, awesome. So many laughs to be had if you just get into this movie.

Adam Johnson is amazing once again, and probably all the time.
