Paul Newman at Fox (2011)

This 27-mintue documentary was one of the news features made for the Blu-ray of THE HUSLTER and is a nice overview of Paul Newman's time at Fox. Rick Jewel (Hugh. M Hefner Chair for the Study of American Films), Eric Lax (Newman biographer), film critic Gene Shalit and film historians Jonathan Kuntz and Thomas Schatz are all interviewed and discuss films including not only THE HUSTLER but also THE LONG HOT SUMMER, FROM THE TERRACE, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, RALLY ROUND THE FLAG BOYS, HEMINGWAY'S ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG MAN, HOMBRE and THE VERDICT.
At just 27-minutes there's not too much information given but what's here is very entertaining. We start off learning about how Warner loaned Newman out and when you hear the pay increase he got with the loan you can't help but laugh. You gotta wonder what Warner was thinking. From here we learn about Newman's rebel attitude and especially to Jack Warner and then the experts discuss what his career was like at Fox. This includes talk of his work with Joanne Woodward and how the two of them fell in love.
From here the historians take a look at the films Newman made at Fox and how THE HUSTLER is what really made him a major player. THE VERDICT also gets a lot of discussion and it seems everyone agrees that it contains one of Newman's finest performance. Strangely, there are a few Fox films that are overlooked here but this is only a minor issue as overall this documentary is very entertaining and those unfamiliar with Newman will have a nice look at what made him so special. Fans of Newman will certainly enjoy watching this and it certainly gives one the desire to go back through his work.
