“Alone,” the latest film from prolific horror director James Cullen Bressack, comes with one of the year’s creepiest premises: Alys, a sex trafficking victim who escaped from captivity ten years earlier, is lured into a terrifying survive-or-die scenario by someone from her past.
It’s a good fit for Spain’s annual Sitges film festival, which highlights fantasy and horror from around the world. “Alone” will have its world premiere in October as part of Sitges’ Midnight X-Treme lineup, and ahead of its public debut comes the extremely unsettling official trailer. Watch it exclusively at the top of the page now.
Starring Yulia Klass as Alys and Bruce Davison as the psycho who lures her to a mountain home in the middle of nowhere in the cold dead of winter, “Alone” also features Josh Kelly (“Transformers” franchise), Mark Rolston, Michael Paré, and Michelle Burke Thomas (“The Final Wish”).

Pernicious, the new film from director James Cullen Bressack, stars Emmy-nominated Emily O’Brien (Young and the Restless), Ciara Hanna (Power Rangers) and Jackie Moore (100 Ghost Street) and tells of three young girls, holidaying in Thailand, who unleash the spirit of a murdered child with only one thing on her mind – revenge. If you haven’t read it yet, check out my review of Pernicious here but not before reading this interview with actress Ciarra Hanna all about the film…
So, first things first, how did you get the gig?
The director emailed me for a meeting, and I read the script and loved it
Did you do Pernicious because it was something totally different from Power Rangers?
I didn’t do the film to do the opposite of Power Rangers. I don’t try and get away from rangers. It’s a part of my life I am very proud of.

Thailand is the setting for bloody horror in “Pernicious,” from Benetone Films. “Pernicious,” directed by James Cullen Bressack and written by Bressack and Taryn Hillin, will be in theaters and On Demand June 19. The film stars Emmy-nominated “Young and the Restless” actress Emily O’Brien as well as Ciara Hanna (“Power Rangers”) and Jackie Moore (“100 Ghost Street.” Just from the trailer alone, you can see that the claims of a “carnival for the eyes” and a “sexy, bloody, and heinous” by Dread Central and Horror News are extremely apt. Take a look at the trailer below the post and you’ll see just how horrifying this particular film is. “Pernicious” [ Read More ]

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by October Coast PR. **there are spoilers here. Director: James Cullen Bressack. Writers: James Cullen Bressack and Taryn Hillin. Cast: Ciara Hanna, Emily O'Brien and Jackie Moore. Pernicious is an indie horror feature from director James Cullen Bressack (Hate Crime). The film's title is synonymous with something that is harmful. And, the film follows several travellers in Thailand and the ghosts they meet. Based in supernatural superstition, Pernicious offers unpolished sound design, including Adr. The film also lifts much of its scares from Asian films of the past, including Ringu (1998) and Ju-on (2002). Though, the term scares is a misnomer as many of the potential horror elements are laughable. Overall, Pernicious is a cliche filled and disappointing indie horror outing. The film begins and stays with a trio of travellers. Alex (Ciarra Hanna) and Rachel (Jackie Moore) are sisters, while Julia (Emily O'Brien) is.

I had the privilege recently to talk with the very talented director James Cullen Bressack. He’s becoming the Cameron Crowe of Horror directors by being a wunderkind and showing mind blowing talent as a writer and director even before he could buy his own beer. I was grateful to get some insight from him, find out what inspired him, and see what’s next. Special thanks to actor/producer/writer Zack Ward for joining in on the interview.
Ks: I know that you get this a lot, but you are a really young guy. You seem so close to the golden age of VHS, with a love for such classics as “Basket Case” and the William Lustig films, yet you are a generation removed. How did you discover them?
Jcb: I got really into watching VHS stuff. My Dad had “Hellraiser” on VHS.

I’m always running a formula in my mind when I watch any movie or a horror movie in particular. Well, I’ve got some attractive ladies in a foreign land, this has got to be a kidnapping or a sex trafficking film. My sensibilities are my own worst enemy sometimes, because with James Cullen Bressack’s film “Pernicious”, it really is like that leftover Whitman’s sampler from Valentine’s Day. You never know what you are going to get.
It begins with three young women from the States arriving in Thailand for a humanitarian teaching gig.

Pernicious (adjective), definition:
causing insidious harm or ruin; ruinous; injurious; hurtful: pernicious teachings; a pernicious lie. deadly; fatal: a pernicious disease. Obsolete. evil; wicked.
Never has there been a film that so clearly lived up to its dictionary definition as James Cullen Bressack’s Pernicious. The film sees three beautiful girls arrive in Thailand to teach English and have a summer filled with adventure but none were prepared for what awaited them. Their nightmare begins when they trio pick up three strangers in a bar; three strangers who disappear with (seemingly) the girls jewelery and a golden statue that was left to rot in the attic, leaving behind only gore-filled dreams that haunt the girls sleep.
