Quarles asks Sheriff Napier what the origin of the term "holler" is, Napier says he didn't know. Holler originates from the word "hollow", which refers to the small valleys between the hills and mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee and also the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. Hollow sounds more like holler when pronounced with a southern accent, plus the valleys are so narrow and long, and carry sound very well, that one can "holler" at their neighbors and be heard through the entire valley.
