Netflix’s action-thriller “Gray Man”starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling has been selected for a $20 million production tax credit allocation by the California Film Commission.
The credit for “Gray Man,” with Joe and Anthony Russo directing, was by far the largest amount unveiled Monday among the $50 million in conditional allocations for nine film projects. That list includes $8.4 million for an untitled Jordan Peele project, $2.5 million for the Octavia Spencer sci-fi thriller “Invasion,” $2.3 million for the Jessica Chastain drama “Losing Clementine,” and $1.4 million for the sports drama “Sweetwater” about the first African American player in the NBA.
“Gray Man,” announced last month, is based on a series of best-sellers from Mark Greaney. Gosling will portray an ex-cia operative who becomes a killer for hire and is pursued by a former colleague, played by Evans. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing and producing through their Agbo company.

Several major films primed to begin production just got some big bucks to shoot in California.
Netflix’s Russo Brothers-directed The Gray Man, the Jessica Chastain-starrer Losing Clementine and an untitled Jordan Peele project for Universal were among nine films allocated $50,053,000 collectively in the last round of Golden State tax credits. Though a return to production has been slow going as California’s coronavirus surges spiked in the last month, all nine films are expected to begin production by early next year.
As you can see in the chart below, the Chris Evans- and Ryan Gosling-starring thriller The Gray Man snagged the largest sum in the first round of what is being termed “Program 3.0” of the incentive initiative.
With $20 million, the movie (which Deadline revealed last month) received just a touch less than what Captain Marvel and Sherlock Holmes 3 got from the California Film Commission program in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

We’re not entirely sure it’s Shadow who’s receiving multiple, dire warnings in the newly released American Gods Season 2 trailer, but if so, we suggest he heeds them — and quickly.
Because when Laura says “He is dangerous. I need you to believe that” and Mad Sweeney cautions “There’s always a cost with him. You just haven’t paid it yet,” who else could they be talking about other than the (literally) bigger than life Mr. Wednesday?
Indeed, the manipulative Old God himself looms large over the nearly two-minute spot, which previews the Starz drama’s Sunday, March 10 (8/7c) return.

There are times when you watch a newcomer in a role and know, just know, that they’ll go on to tackle great, eclectic challenges; with “Call Me By Your Name” still in moviegoers’ rearview mirrors, Timothee Chalamet, for example, is already proving himself an enormous, versatile talent. But other times, such as with Richie Merritt, the star of “White Boy Rick,” you’re no less transfixed, but you wonder: Is this young actor simply perfect in this one role? Or can he countenance others with that beautifully, ordinarily dull expression? While there isn’t a single moment in his performance that doesn’t feel utterly believable, it also seems singularly engineered for this character and this one alone.
“White Boy Rick,” director Yann Demange’s account of the young, wasted life of real-life teen drug dealer and FBI informant Richard Wershe Jr., is punctuated by surprising verisimilitude that uplifts...

As the composer of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld,” Ramin Djawadi has become the master of his musical craft, demonstrating great versatility by alternating between aggressive action and intimate drama. No wonder he’s been nominated for both fantasy epics. But he’s the favorite to capture his first Emmy for “Game of Thrones'” penultimate Season 7 (“The Dragon and The Wolf” finale), bolstered by the exposure from his popular “Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience” tour.
“‘Game of Thrones’ offers such a wide range of instruments that I use and stylistically for what I’m doing, but ‘Westworld’ is the same,” Djawadi said. “There is so much for me to explore. It goes all the way from these acoustic and organic instruments to ethnic instruments this season. But then it goes all the way to the other side by experimenting with sound designs purely with synthesizers.”

For “Westworld” newbies Howard Cummings and Sharen Davis, coming into Season Two to design the production and costumes turned out to be an advantage for their Emmy-nominated episode about Shogun World (“Akane No Mai”). Coming in fresh, yet knowing the sci-fi series inside out, allowed them to hone in on the Western sets and costumes for Sweetwater so they could create a mirror image for Edo feudal Japan.
“My impression of Sweetwater was as a viewer, not as a builder, in the first season,” said two-time Emmy winner Cummings. “And when I got to read the script, it truly was a mirror image of Sweetwater. But Shogun World seemed like a natural because the films of Kurosawa and Westerns are very similar and tied together.”
The creation of Shogun World as a mirror image of Sweetwater even extended to some of the Japanese hosts, who paralleled their Western counterparts. Bandit...

That’s what Westworld‘s hosts might say if they heard Ramin Djawadi’s soundtrack for the HBO series. But to fans, the sci-fi drama’s musical cues should sound awfully familiar.

“Westworld Mobile” will be available for download on Thursday, according to a tweet from the App store that was retweeted from the official Twitter handle of the game.
Players take the role of a new Delos employee in the upcoming “Westworld Mobile.” Players can manage the park from the hit HBO series “Westworld” and all of its locations, such as Sweetwater, Escalante, and Las Mudas.
Managing the hosts is a big part of the job too, and players can even customize the hosts props, appearances, and even their reveries— gestures that hosts develop in spite of their memories being wiped, a key feature noted in the first season of the TV series.
Players can also match hosts to guests, determining which hosts will best meet the needs whether that means fulfilling their sense of adventure or, erm, other desires.

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read ahead unless you’ve seen last Sunday’s episode of “Westworld.”)
Alright, either someone royally screwed up during the filming of last Sunday’s episode of “Westworld” Season 2 or fans just found an incredible Easter egg, because some weird stuff was going on in the background.
The most recent installment of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s HBO sci-fi series was a day in the limelight episode for Ghost Nation member Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon). Entitled “Kiksuya,” the story centered around his history in the park and how he came to the mission he is on today to help all the other hosts “find the door” out of Westworld.
But because you were so focused on all the moving moments going on the foreground, you may have missed what was either a giant oversight or extreme attention to detail in the background.

“Westworld” fans have been waiting for a look at Shogun World ever since samurai were spotted in the Season 1 finale. It took the series until the fifth episode of Season 2 to get a peek inside this park, and the wait was worth it. The bulk of the episode takes place in Shogun World, which evokes the Edo period of Japan and sees Maeve (Thandie Newton) grow into the most powerful host in the park. Dive into the action and revelations of “Akane no Mai” below.
The Mesa – Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) watches the Delos rescue team clean up the massacre at The Mesa. Humans are put in body bags while dead hosts are rounded up in hopes they can one day be reprogrammed. One employee makes a startling revelation that about one third of the hosts appear as though they’ve been wiped. It’s as if there was never any data stored inside them.

The season 1 finale of Westworld was shockingly badass to say the very least, and while there were certain payoffs to various storylines that had been building throughout the first 10 episodes, it also raised a bunch of questions as to just where exactly the story will be heading in season 2. So, in anticipation of this weekend’s premiere episode on HBO, here’s a look at what we know so far about Westworld and what we’re hoping to see during this new season, which kicks off Sunday night at 9:00pm Est.

Fresh Blood: While we haven’t seen them in action yet, Westworld expands its cast with six newcomers for season 2, including the always great Betty Gabriel, Jonathan Tucker, Fares Fares, Gustaf Skarsgård, Katja Herbers (The Leftovers), and Neil Jackson.

One would think having played Captain Hook in Peter Pan, Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies and voicing DC villains like Sinestro and Ra's Al Ghul in animated films--as well as a couple more authoritarian figures in Star Wars: Rebels--would have gotten any desire to be evil out of actor Jason Isaacs’ system.

Tonight’s trip into Ford and Arnold’s gun-slinging paradise (or perhaps Hell, as the title Contrapasso implies) was the most astonishing episode of Westworld to date. Intricately plotted and densely challenging, we had shootouts, betrayals, moments of robotic transcendence whereupon a host broke her “modest little loop,” and even confirmation of true artificial sentiency in Maeve.
The Dolores and William subplots jumped deeper down the rabbit hole while elevating the tension to remarkable degrees. The group found themselves...

The intrigue thickens in HBO's Westworld as the series develops contrasting views of what the park truly represents.
This review contains spoilers.
1.2 Chestnut
Like a bath of milk congealing around a mechanical exoskeleton, the Westworld plot thickened in all the right places in episode two, giving definition to what very well could be HBO’s best new show in years. For all the gunfire and other sensual distractions, two scenes in particular stood out as what makes Westwold as a TV series work so much better than, say, Westworld the movie.
The first occurs early during a conversation between two new major characters, William and Logan. Both are ‘newcomers’ this week, quite literally so in William’s case as this is his first time at Westworld. For Logan, it's all old hat to his returning eyes, which hunger for the many lurid spectacles of the park. As he more or less implies,...

You can’t accuse HBO’s biggest drama gamble in years of playing it safe. Developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, “Westworld” remakes Michael Crichton’s 1973 film about a futuristic theme park as a mediation on what it means to be human — from the point of view of the robots created to populate an artificial Western world.

The world “Westworld” occupies is lush with authentic details, made possible by HBO’s commitment to physical production, and that same sheen of quality is only enhanced by the stellar cast, including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton and James Marsden.
At the Television Critics Association press tour, IndieWire spoke with Joy and Nolan about the impact of video game design, what went into creating the world of Westworld and the ethics of consent as they apply to robot sex.

Welcome to Westworld, a theme park of the future run by the Delos Corporation, where cowboys and farmgirls and hookers and bandits roam an artificial Western landscape where anything — anything — goes. Teddy (James Marsden) arrives in the small town of Sweetwater in search of adventure and finds the beautiful Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood)…
But both Teddy and Dolores, along with the vast majority of Sweetwater’s residents, are robots programmed by Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins), Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and a team of specialists operating in isolation in an undisclosed location. Their primary purpose is to keep Westworld operational and their ludicrously wealthy clientele happy, which isn’t easy when some of the “hosts” start malfunctioning. The hosts are incapable of hurting humans, we’re told repeatedly, but their old programming is coming back to haunt them — and something is brewing under the surface.

Cinema Retro readers no doubt remember Michael Crichton’s classic sci-fi thriller Westworld. Who can forget the chilling spectacle of Yul Brynner – sans face – stalking a hapless Richard Benjamin? When I heard HBO was “rebooting” Westworld, I was skeptical. The word “Why?” kept coming to mind. The original was so good, why go there?
I’m happy to say I was dead wrong. By expanding Michael Crichton’s original vision, the producers were able to open up new storylines and vastly enhance the earlier concept. While the 1973 film was epic, it was limited by the visual effects available at the time. Now every modern tool in the VFX toolbox can be used and the results are intoxicating, drawing the viewer into Westworld’s latex embrace.
The overall setup is still the same – a high-end resort modeled after the Old West where guests can indulge in every fantasy...

Four episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
There isn’t much hand-holding in the opening hours of HBO’s insane new epic Westworld. Like the guests in the show’s western theme park, there isn’t a helpful guide to show you around, or a succinct orientation video with a dancing DNA strand to fill you in on bits and pieces of how the park even started. As one of Westworld’s robot “hosts” says to a nervous guest early on, “figuring out how it works is half the fun.”
Truer words couldn’t be spoken about the first four hours of Westworld, which is both a terrifying disaster-in-slow-motion and a rollicking adventure, all rolled into a plot that has so many levels of storytelling you’ll be obsessed with its nascent mythology by the end of the pilot’s goosebump-inducing opening scene. But it’s never obtuse, never needlessly highbrow,...

Would you really want to try to scare James Caan? Haven’t we seen what he does to people that cross him in several films? Apparently It Follows' Keir Gilchrist and co-star Logan Miller didn’t get that memo, as they’ll be making just such an attempt in The Waiting.Kasra Farahani is directing the indie thriller, born from Mark Bianculli and Jeff Richard’s script. The story follows two high school filmmakers (Gilchrist and Miller) who decide that what they really need to do is create the illusion of a haunting on an unsuspecting local neighbour, which we can only assume is Caan. This has all the ingredients for a prank that could go horribly, horribly wrong, be it supernaturally or just with two young punks getting their comeuppance. The film kicks off shooting in Los Angeles in the next couple of weeks. Caan is shooting action-romance...

Autumn Blood was shot entirely on 65mm in the Austrian Alps and stars Sophie Lowe, Peter Stormare, Gustaf Skarsgard, Samuel Vauramo and newcomer Maximilian Harnisch.

After both starred in the first two Hunger Games installments but never got to really interact on screen, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth will be teaming up again to star in a revenge Western titled By Way of Helena for Wish You Were Here helmer Kieran Darcy-Smith.
The 1880s-set flick has been coming together for a few years now, but Harrelson and Hemsworth’s casting is the most exciting news we’ve got about By Way of Helena to date. The Western boasts a script by Matt Cook, which made the Black List for most popular but unproduced screenplays back in 2009. It centers on “David, a Texas Ranger (Hemsworth) and his Mexican bride who are sent to investigate a mysterious frontier town where multiple Mexican bodies keep washing up on the riverbank.” While in the frontier town, David squares off with a sinister preacher (Harrelson) named Abraham, who “holds the townfolk in a fearful grasp.

Wes Bentley rarely takes on leading roles, probably partially because his youthful, nondescript features lead audiences to identify with him most as a background player. Things People Do, a quiet drama directed by The Thin Red Line editor Saar Klein, finds Bentley taking on the main role of insurance adjuster Bill Scanlon, who turns to a life of crime when always playing the nice guy leaves him jobless and heavily in debt. Unfortunately, the film’s plodding, ham-fisted narrative allows neither Bentley nor Things People Do as a whole any opportunity to leave even the slightest impression.
Klein and co-writer Joe Conway clearly wanted their film to be received as a morality play, with seemingly every line of dialogue holding deeper meaning. In moderation, symbolic dialogue can be one of a screenwriter’s most potent weapons, but here it’s more exhausting than enlightening. One of the reasons Things People Do...
