- Quotes
Twilight Sparkle: Oh my gosh, I think I did it! If I can find a way to read The Art of Invisibility Spells, and Thornhoof's Brief History of Canterlot at the same time, that could leave me a half-hour scheduling window! Huh?
[magic crackling, wind blowing]
Twilight Sparkle: What's going on?
[another Twilight Sparkle, wearing a damaged black sneaking suit, an eyepatch, a wild hairstlye, and a cut on one cheek, appears; present Twilight yelps]
Future Twilight Sparkle: Twilight, you've got to listen to me!
Twilight Sparkle: Who are you? I mean, you're me, but I'm me too. How can there be two 'me's? It's not scientifically possible. *You* are not scientifically possible!
Future Twilight Sparkle: Twilight, please! I have a very important message for you from the future!
Twilight Sparkle: You're from the *future*?
Future Twilight Sparkle: That's right, now listen...
Twilight Sparkle: What happened to you? The future must be awful.
Future Twilight Sparkle: Please! I don't have much time!
Twilight Sparkle: Is there some sort of epic pony war in the distant future or something?
Future Twilight Sparkle: Actually, I'm from next Tuesday morning, but that's not important right now!
Twilight Sparkle: I can't believe time travel is really possible! How did you, I mean, *I* figure it out?
Future Twilight Sparkle: The time spells are in the Canterlot archives. But that's not...
Twilight Sparkle: Really? Where? I've never seen them.
Future Twilight Sparkle: They're in the Star Swirl the Bearded wing. Now, you have to listen to...
Twilight Sparkle: Is time travel fun, or does it hurt? I have so many questions-
[muffled voice; Future Twilight sticks her hoof in present Twilight's mouth]
Future Twilight Sparkle: I have something extremely important to tell you about the future, and I only have a few seconds so you've got to listen! Whatever you do, don't-
[magic crackling; she disappears]
Twilight Sparkle: Future Twilight? Oh no! What was she trying to warn me about? Her clothes, her mane, that scar... oh, what a mess she is!... I mean, I am... or I... will be...
[gasps]
Twilight Sparkle: She must want me to prevent whatever horrible thing happens in the future!
[gasps]

For me, "It's About Time" had elements of both extremes. It is not a perfect episode by all means, and the concept is not fully realised. It is still quite good though, and while not one of Season 2's best episodes it is also far from being one of its worst. Put it somewhere around high middle, which is a quite solid position to be in. It is a delight for fans of Twilight and people will also like Spike here, but other episodes have done a much better job for example with Rarity.
The animation is typically great, with some very imaginative moments in the futuristic scenes. The music has energy and lushness. On the most part, the voice acting is very good. Superb in the case of Tara Strong in some of her best and most dynamic voice work with some of Twilight Sparkle's meatiest material of Season 2. The writing is both entertaining and heartfelt. Twilight speaking out loud what she is thinking stands out. "It's About Time" has some nice subtle messaging, that is also surprisingly deep.
"It's About Time" starts off on a cute, without trying too hard to or being too cutesy, note. Cute is also a great way to sum up Spike's role. Really loved what was done with Twilight, who has not been this relatable in a while and is a quite riveting character. The little details/things are striking and the episode does really well with the character relationships. Especially Applejack and Rarity's friendship/working together. The story is generally intriguing.
Albeit not perfect in execution by any stretch. Actually think that "It's About Time" could have done more with the concept that it had. It's an imaginative one but for my tastes it was executed a little too ordinarily. Surprises are few with stakes being not very high at all, for a MA Larson-penned episode this was a bit safe.
Rarity's treatment of Twilight was a bit too cruel for reasons inexplicable, which has been the case for some of Season 2's epospdes. Some of the time travel is a bit convoluted. On a more nit-picky note, Rainbow Dash sounded a bit off.
On the whole, quite good but could have been more. 7/10
