Refresh for latest…: As it crossed the $1B international box office milestone this past weekend, Warner Bros again owned the frame with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and its third session haul of $33.7M from 71 markets. That was good for a 47% drop from the previous weekend and lifts the overseas cume to $278.6M and global to $436.6M. Meanwhile, WB and Legendary’s other major title in the marketplace, Dune: Part Two, now has a shot at getting to $700M worldwide.
While 2024 may end up down on 2023, coming out of last week’s CinemaCon exhibition conference, it’s not all doom and gloom — something we heard in a refrain — as several titles continue to post solid numbers. There’s also plenty of local play doing great business, notably in Japan this frame where the 27th movie in the Case Closed series, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram, has opened to...

Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki is revered in China as much as he is anywhere. The 83-year-old filmmaker’s Oscar-winning swan song The Boy and the Heron opened last Wednesday in China to take advantage of the country’s Qingming public holiday and by Sunday it had earned $73 million — more than its totals in both Japan ($61 million) and North America ($46.6 million).
The Studio Ghibli film easily overtook Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. holdover monster movie Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, which brought in $36 million over the four-day holiday weekend. Godzilla vs. Kong‘s total now sits at $93.5 million, the biggest haul by a Hollywood movie in China in many months, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects The Boy and the Heron to top out at $106.5 million and Godzilla vs. Kong to finish with $121.9 million — but the company’s estimates are often subject to considerable revision.

Having played J. Jonah Jameson in Marvel and Commissioner Gordon in DC, J.K. Simmons is no stranger to excelling in the comic book genre. And with Invincible, the Oscar-winner was once again allowed to spread his acting chops in the realm of superheroes, and unlike his live-action Cbm counterparts, Omni-Man was not bound by mortality.
But this isn’t the lone time the actor has voiced Cbm characters in animation, as prior to this series, the Whiplash Star had played two major DC villains in the acclaimed Justice League Unlimited.

The Kung Fu Panda film series is undoubtedly one of the most successful animation franchises in Hollywood. Beginning in 2008, the first film’s massive success led to multiple sequels, with the 4th installment having released a few weeks ago in theaters. In each of the films, the loveable panda Po, voiced by the incomparable Jack Black, has battled various villains while discovering his own strength.
A scene from Kung Fu Panda 4
In Kung Fu Panda 4, Po faces fresh threats from a formidable new antagonist, Chameleon, along with becoming the Spiritual Leader. While a 5th film in the franchise is yet to be officially confirmed, events in the 4th movie have left audiences with possible hints as to who could be the next ominous foe to challenge the protagonist.

Some movie stars don’t lose their luster. A 90-year-old ape and a 69-year-old reptile are taking over domestic charts this weekend, as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” scored $37 million from 3,861 venues across opening day and preview screenings. It’s an impressive debut that puts the monster-mash well ahead of the pace that was projected earlier this week, which had pegged an opening just north of $50 million.
“The New Empire” cost a substantial sum of $135 million to produce, but it’s getting off on the right, gigantic foot. Reviews have been mediocre — a notch down from the fairly positively received “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021 and way below the euphoric praise that the Japanese production “Godzilla Minus One” earned just three months ago. Nonetheless, audiences aren’t being swayed. The kaiju team-up seems to be playing well to crowds, after earning an “A-” grade from research firm Cinema Score.

The lead pair make a brilliant double act, but the franchise has run out of its signature sweetness and charm
The cuddly kung fu master is back. Jack Black returns as dumpling-loving panda Po, the unlikeliest of lean, mean fightin’ machines. It’s been eight years since Kung Fu Panda 3, and on the evidence here, the delay can’t be put down to KFP4 being a labour of love, the product of animation studio DreamWorks’ A team pouring in enormous amounts of effort. It’s a hurricane of slapstick (some of it in fact very funny) and age-appropriate energetic fight scenes, but lacks the sweetness and charm of the franchise at its best. It failed the wriggle test on my seven-year-old cinema date, who was squirming in her seat around the hour mark.

Cuddly Kung Fu master Po the Panda returns to the big screen for a fourth instalment of the animated action comedy franchise, eight years after Kung Fu Panda 3. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that the law of diminishing returns has very much kicked in, because while the film is entirely amiable, it doesn’t quite deliver the same punch, and frequently feels like it’s going through the motions.
The film begins in the Valley of Peace, where Po (Jack Black) is content with his life as the legendary Dragon Warrior, occasionally defeating the odd villain with his sweet kung-fu skills and using his standing in the community to open a tofu-and-noodle shop.

Strong Second Weekend: The film witnessed a mere 35% drop from its opening weekend, a testament to its ability to retain audiences.

Even a Hollywood hit with Chinese characteristics can’t seem to revive the U.S. studios’ diminished status at China’s box office.
Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 — the latest installment in one of China’s favorite long-running U.S. franchises, thanks to its Chinese culture-steeped story — opened to $14.7 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data from regional consultancy Artisan Gateway. But that total toplined one of the country’s weakest weekends of the year, so far. Including preview screenings the week prior, Kung Fu Panda 4 finished Sunday with a somewhat healthier-sounding $25.9 million.
Either way, the movie is miles behind its franchise predecessor Kung Fu Panda 3, which opened the weekend before Chinese New Year in 2016 with a record-setting $57.8 million haul. The threequel finished its run in China with $154.3 million, surpassing its North American total of $143.5 million. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects Kung Fu Panda 4...

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” kicked off with $16 million in North American ticket sales across Friday and preview screenings in 4,345 theaters. That nearly matches the $16.6 million that its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned on its opening day in November 2021. Sony’s sci-fi comedy sequel will easily top domestic charts, though its work isn’t done yet considering its $100 million production budget.
That’s an uptick in the price tag from “Afterlife,” which cost $75 million before marketing and distribution. That franchise revival nearly tripled its $44 million domestic opening weekend, playing well through the Thanksgiving holiday to finish with $129 million and $204 million worldwide. Similarly, “Frozen Empire” could boost its fortunes with Easter at the end of the month.
Reviews have been leaning more lukewarm compared to the so-so received “Afterlife.” Early moviegoers are also a little cooler on the franchise now, with audience survey firm Cinema Score turning in a B+ grade. (“Afterlife” scored an A-.

Dune: Part Two is one cinematic marvel, not just because of the story and performances, but also because of how Denis Villeneuve adapted the elements from the books. For instance, the film included the scene where Paul Atreides finally gains mastery over the sandworms and becomes a Sandrider. However, Villeneuve intentionally removed one plothole from the scene, which could have caused significant confusion among the viewers.

Dune 2 has already surpassed the box office collection of Villeneuve’s first film. By the end of the third week of its run, the film grossed $494.7 million at the global box office, closing in on the $500 million milestone.

Previews for Universal Pictures and Dreamworks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” put the Chinese-themed film in fourth place at the mainland China box office, a week ahead of its official theatrical debut.
Over the March 15-17 weekend, however, first and second places remained with holdover titles “The Pig, The Snake and the Pigeon” and “Dune: Part Two.”

According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, it earned $11.1 million (RMB79.1 million), for a cumulative of $73.2 million (RMB520 million).
“Dune 2” earned $9.9 million (RMB70 million) in its second weekend, down from $19.9 million in its first session. Kung Fu Panda has become one of the most iconic animated series of all time. Although targeted at children, the films have found a huge viewership among adults. This is not surprising considering just how good the films are. Perfectly balancing comedy and story, they have created a world like no other. Not only does it have deeply fascinating power structures and dynamics, but it is one of the most beautiful worlds in animation.

It looks like “Dune: Part Two” reinvigorated the box office so well last weekend that it had to take a backseat to a perfectly-timed family animated sequel in its second weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal knew that they were likely to have a big hit with the animated sequel “Kung Fu Panda 4,” returning Jack Black to the popular martial arts cartoon character Po, which would benefit from the character’s presence on streaming, as well as from the lack of animated movies in theaters. The mostly positive reviews put “Kung Fu Panda 4” at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and being the only animated feature for family audiences allowed it to bring in $19.25 million on Friday, including $3.8 million from Thursday previews. Universal has estimated it winning the weekend quite soundly with $58.3 million in 4,035 theaters, and audiences were generally positive, giving it an “A-” on audience polling site CinemaScore.

Universal and DreamWork’s animated adventure “Kung Fu Panda 4” topped the domestic box office, earning a solid $58.3 million from 4,035 theaters in its opening weekend.
It marks the biggest debut of the franchise since the original, 2008’s “Kung Fu Panda” ($60 million), overtaking the start of the two prior entries, 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” ($41 million) and 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” ($47.6 million), not adjusted for inflation.
“Family audiences were primed to come out and have fun with a much-beloved franchise,” says Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “Animated movies tend to leg out. We anticipate a tremendous corridor.”
Internationally, the fourth film in the martial arts-inspired animated comedy collected $22 million from 41 markets for a global tally of $80 million. This installment cost $85 million to produce, a lower price tag than the first three movies, each of which cost about $150 million. A new chapter in the “Kung Fu Panda” saga has been unleashed upon movie patrons. This film is accurately called Kung Fu Panda 4 and comes eight years after 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3. This adventure, however, seems to be less a solid entry in the series and more of an example of the law of diminishing returns as it enjoys its best moments harkening back to earlier films in the series.
Po (Jack Black) faces his most difficult challenge yet as he is told he must retire from fighting as the Dragon Warrior and focus on more spiritual endeavors. For Po, however, this is problematic for two reasons: 1) first, he does not feel qualified to ascend to any sort of spiritual leadership and instead prefers to stick to “kicking butt” and, 2) he must find and train an apprentice to replace himself as the new Dragon Warrior to protect the Valley of Peace.

Two legendary heroes are battling at the box office this weekend: the Dragon Warrior and the Lisan al Gaib.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” will duke it out at the box office. So far, Universal’s animated, family friendly flick has made $3.8 million in previews at the box office from 4,035 North American theaters.
It’s expected to be a close box office battle, but Jack Black’s karate-loving panda Po has a slight edge over Timothee Chalamet’s intergalactic hero Paul Atreides. “Kung Fu Panda 4” is projected to make between $45 million and $50 million in its opening weekend, while “Dune: Part Two” is on track for $40 million to $45 million in its second weekend of release.
The lack of family movies at theaters should bode well for “Kung Fu Panda 4.” Besides “Dune: Part Two” reinvigorating the theater business last week, there hasn’t been another box office...

It's been nearly a decade since "Kung Fu Panda 3" hit theaters, but the paw-punching panda hasn't been dormant the entire time. Since the sequel's arrival in theaters, there have been two DreamWorks Animation Television shows ("Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny" and "Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight") following Po's adventures after what seemed like a nice trilogy capper. So it's not as if we've been short on martial arts mayhem. The latter series even managed to lure Jack Black back to voice Po, and it just wrapped up a three-season run in September 2023. So bringing "Kung Fu Panda" back to the big screen really needed to feel worth it. How did "Shrek Forever After" director Mike Mitchell and co-director Stephanie Ma Stine ("She-Ra and the Princesses of Power") fare with the latest mystical journey for Po?

Since the original “Kung Fu Panda” debuted in 2008, Po, voiced by Jack Black, has been a very busy Dragon Warrior. There have been two sequels, 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” and 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and 123 episodes of television centered on the DreamWorks Animation franchise. That’s a lot of adventures, quests, fights, and dumplings for Po to experience over a relatively short period of time.

Get ready for Kung Fu Panda 4, which is coming in just 2 days. Started back in 2008, the series explores the story of Po—a panda who learns martial arts.
Known for its humor and action, the Kfp series is a Dreamworks favorite. Now, the upcoming fourth installment continues Po’s journey as the Dragon Warrior.
A still from Kung Fu Panda
The third installment of the franchise hit theaters seven years ago and became one of the top-grossing films of 2016.
Despite its success, the crown for the most successful movie in the Kung Fu Panda series still belongs to Kung Fu Panda 2. The sequel to the first flick pulled in a staggering $665 million (via Box Office Mojo) worldwide.
But why does it stand out? Well, there’s one big reason behind its success, which led many to believe that Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best entry in the franchise so far.

It’s a box office battle of the sequels as Universal and Dreamworks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” vies for first place with “Dune: Part Two” on domestic charts.
The fourth “Kung Fu Panda” movie looks to collect $45 million to $50 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” is projected to add $40 million to $45 million in its second outing.
Regardless of reviews, “Kung Fu Panda 4” should benefit from the dearth of family films at the box office. Based on estimates, initial ticket sales should improve upon its immediate predecessors, 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3” ($41 million debut) and 2011’s “Kung Fu Panda 2” ($47.6 million). The original, 2008’s “Kung Fu Panda,” kicked off the martial arts-inspired comedy series with $60 million and ultimately grossed $632 million globally. The two follow-ups were financial winners with the sequel earning $665 million and the threequel generating $521 million.

It isn’t every day that you hear that an A-lister does not even know about the details of their popular on-screen character. However, that is exactly what happened with Dustin Hoffman in the Kung Fu Panda movies when he lent his voice to the character of Master Shifu.

Kung Fu Panda is one of the most popular animated franchises on the planet and it is so for excellent reasons. The series has incredible characters, amazing voice actors, and a completely non-ambiguous plot. In each movie, we saw the character development of Po, aka the Dragon Warrior, to a higher level than he was in the previous movie.

Kung Fu Panda 4 has critics raving with largely positive early reviews as the first reactions to Dreamworks' newest animated movie make their way out.
Amidst a high-profile cast of stars, Jack Black continues his run in the animated realm after his celebrated portrayal of Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This also marks his first time playing fan-favorite Po in this franchise since 2016's Kung Fu Panda 3.
Maintaining the series' usual PG rating, this fourth entry will see Po in search of a new Dragon Warrior while facing potentially his scariest villain yet in the Chameleon.

Not to assume, dear reader, that you regularly take in my musings on the box office and the movie industry in general. But if you do, I don't need to drone on about the bad year that it has been up to this point. Yes, "Dune: Part Two" is finally here to save us (to some degree), but ticket sales are still down dramatically compared to this point in 2023. It's a downturn the industry can ill afford right now. Luckily, another hero is on the horizon, and his name is Kung Fu Panda.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4" arrives next weekend. While the return of Jack Black's Po may not ignore the box office on record-breaking levels, it should be more than enough to provide theaters with a little bump. Currently, the expectation is that the film will bring in anywhere between $30 and $39 million in its opening frame,...

Read on for Gold Derby’s March 2024 box office preview.
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros. – March 1)
When Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune” opened in October 2021, it was surrounded by uncertainty since the box office hadn’t fully recovered from the pandemic, so Warner Bros. decided to release it at the same time on its relatively new streamer, HBO Max. It ended up opening with a not-bad $41 million and ended up grossing $434.8 million worldwide; months later,...

Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
Unlike its previous three installments, the upcoming fourth installment of the saga would notably be considerably different and more tilted towards the ‘unique’ side. This is because it is more influenced by anime than any of the previous movies, all because anime is currently raging as the latest trend in the industry, leading to its new big resurgence.
