You can't win em all
A_Different_Drummer14 January 2016
But indeed you can win a few.

As I explained in my other reviews, I am overall not happy with this series. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

The LAST AIRBENDER series represented some of the best writing I have ever seen. Ever. And I have done over 1000 reviews for IMDb, which just scratches the surface. I have watched the entire AIRBENDER series top to bottom. The last show I did that for was Buffy.

KORRA in comparison seemed trivial, irrelevant and lacking the magic of the original. Until the two-part close to this season.

Some of the magic was back. I saw it in the throwaway scene where Bolin confesses his love to Eska. And I felt it in the writing.

Best of the season and so far best of the series.

Mike DiMartino: "It's A New Era" - For Season 3
RJupiter223 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I got very upset seeing past 10,000 years of Avatar's being eliminated so easily, got to know and like past Avatar's. Big part of all those shows I liked was connecting to the past Avatars which was a key writing hook. This also eliminates a lot of future episodes or stories to write for Season 3.

Creator Mike DiMartino said, "It's all about Korra dealing with the change of the world in this point in time. At the end of Book 2 she says it's a new era." These words will prove to be more than just grand hyperbole, though; "It really is a new era," DiMartino said. "We're going to show how Harmonic Convergence and her battle with Vaatu kind of shifted the world a bit." Thought I might see the Big Turtle's appear in final two shows, but they already did that in the other Avatar Series. Overall show was a great escape with good characters, animation and writing.

Had me on the edge of my seat

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, I just don't t get all the criticism on LOK. I guess if people wouldn't have know ATL, their opinion would be a lot different but sure it will always be compared to it, that's the way it is. Like many others I refused to watch Korra after Aang's journey came to an end, but oh boy am I glad that I changed my mind. Yes, LOK may lack character development sometimes, but still you quickly fall in love with it's world and the main characters. I just can't help but love the new Team Avatar and especially Tenzin and his siblings when they appear in season 2 and overall the overall appearance of the show is something new and special, you can dive right into it. I got no problem with her avatar state being a more down to earth version at times, but that's because she activates it far more often than Aang and it's still damn powerful. To be completely honest I prefer her over Aang, yes she is 5 years older and not that more mature but I feel she is more authentic and vulnerable and overall likeable but that's just my opinion. This season is amazing, I thought S1 can't be topped but I was wrong (again) not just the origins of the avatar were explored (awesome to see uncle iroh again!) but the quest in and around the spirit world was mind blowing. If you liked ATL you should definitely give Korra a chance, believe me you won't regret it!!

Perfect ending to a somewhat average season!
zohal199922 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to be blunt here. This season started off incredibly strong. I was pumped after an exciting season 1. However, the season hit a rough patch. Every show has it. And I just lost interest in the show halfway through. My friend encouraged me to finish it because apparently the ending would change the course of Avatar forever. She was right.

The episode that really picked me up was The Beginning Part 1. Just the fact that we were learning about the First Avatar kept me intrigued and as the tension built up and we hit the finale I was gob smacked.

First of all, we learn that The Avatar isn't just The Avatar because they can bend all four elements. The Avatar is The Avatar because they're part spirit. That is why the reincarnation occurs because the spirit with the previous memories moves on to the next. It is also why the Avatar is the bridge (anchor) of the two worlds.

We also get to see Iroh in the season which was SO SO EXCITING!!! And we get to see Zhao which surprised me. I'm happy to say that he deserved being stuck in the fog of lost souls the entire time. Better than dying if you ask me.

All in all, a fantabulous season although there was a rough patch and I have to say that the ending was extremely GAH!!! It will be interesting to see how Book 3 will progress from here. I've heard it's called Change . Interesting!

(Overall for the season) Lots of good concepts, meh execution
sevskirita21 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This season was so... average. The concepts themselves were fantastic, but the execution of them just didn't work. There were so many plot lines that were just limping along, like Mako's arcs and Tonrock's.

Even the main ones that seemed really important in concept just didn't hit hard, like the freeing of the dark spirit. Somehow I think defeating the spirit that represents all the evil in the world should've been a much bigger deal than like mid-season with no character arc setups for even Korra to pay off with? The climax fell flat because there was no emotional weight to it. No characters had seriously personal stakes. Very weird and middling.

The only part that felt gripping and pertinent was the Avatar origin story. That was really well done.

Disrespectful
tanniemannie6 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I can not believe all of the past avatars just got destroyed like that? Jinora just swooped in and did what exactly? Disrespectful towards the last Airbender series. Animation was amazing so I can't give it 1 star. But I felt sad and let down. The writers should be ashamed.

I didn't care
tlettl8322 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously didn't care and was stunned to see the low standard of creativity for the ending. This season had episodes that gave me chills and made me cry a happy tear, but the ending didn't deliver the promise. Very rushed, "insert hot-fix here" mode. It didn't get me engaged in the solution, made me question all logic and left me with wishes for a remake asap.

There is also a strong feeling the producers of this show take too much in concern about what the fan-base wanted to see. The result with trying to put small request threw the whole ending was a bad decision in my opinion. On the bright side, there is one scene with a easter-egg for those who follower Avatar - the last airbender series. There is an answer to something not addressed until now.
