This was a refreshing change from the lengthy, event-based nature documentaries which are the norm nowadays (and which, by the way, I'm a huge fan of!).
The episodes focus on one region, such as the Scottish Highlands, Galapagos or Australia's Red Centre, and give a whistle-stop tour of its inhabitants and the inter-relationships between them.
Sure, there were times when I wished they didn't skim across certain species or scenes quite so quickly, but this was a small price to pay for a wonderfully punchy, upbeat look at nature accompanied by the BBC's usual excellent camera-work.
Steve Backshall's narration and a great soundtrack fit this approach perfectly. In just 30 minutes you get quite a good sense of what makes each environment tick.
