The episodes where Severide gets to work with the Office of Fire Investigation or Chicago PD - or a combination of both - are some of the best on the show, for mine, and "A Beautiful Life" does little to dissuade me of that opinion.
One thing Chicago Fire has always been brilliant at is moving the show along. Either by character departures or promotions or changed personal life situations, things rarely remain the same.
The freshness of storylines is what keeps Chicago Fire so popular, ratings-wise. It's been great watching Severide go from a kind-of womanising smoke eater with a kind-of rebel, devil-may-care attitude to a husband, senior firefighter (still, it could be argued, with a devil-may-care attitude sometimes) who is called in to lend his expertise to arson investigations at the like. A brilliant character arc.
