It isn’t easy keeping up with mainstream expectations and now, thanks to the Internet, the pressure to meet certain standards bears down on women of all ages, 24/7. With our culture becoming increasingly sexualized on a widespread level, documentary filmmakers Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus opt to address the issue from a far more intimate standpoint, putting the focus on three women at very different stages of life, but all still feeling and reacting to the need to be seen in a certain light. We’ve got Winnifred, a 12-year-old middle school student who is wise beyond her years, but still feels the pressure to appease peers’ expectations on Facebook. Then [ Read More ]

It's in the photos that everything comes together. "Sexy Baby," a documentary from Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and debuts on TV on Showtime tonight, Friday, December 7th at 10pm, begins by declaring that it will focus on three women living in three different cities, and that "their lives have nothing in common except one thing." That thing is their gender, though it's more precisely how they're wrestling with the desire and pressure to be attractive, to seek out attention for their looks and perceived fuckability and to conform to an ideal of beauty that's shaped by an increasingly sexual pop culture that's heavily influenced by porn. Which brings us back to the photos. All three of the subjects have an array of pictures of themselves, either self-portraits or taken by their friends or professionals, that end up on display for the camera.

Title: Sexy Baby Directors: Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus With the proliferation of online pornography, the advent of “sexting” and the ever-present synaptic connection of social media, sexual maturation and in particular notions of womanhood are changing for adolescents and twentysomethings. “Sexy Baby,” an inquisitive and engaging new documentary from Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, attempts to sift through this mass media assault and shifting mores, to determine the toll this seeming increase in titillation is taking on America. The film takes as its subjects three unconnected women of different ages, and then follows them over the course of about three years. Twelve-year-old Winnifred Bonjean-Alpart, is a preternaturally gifted New Yorker whose separated parents Jennifer [ Read More ]

Above photo: Winnifred in Sexy Baby Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus are first-time filmmakers whose feature debut Sexy Baby premiered at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. Four years ago we strolled down a bright pink shag carpet and into a barrage of naked bouncing breasts. The breasts were fake, but the scene - a convention center filled with porn stars, including Rubber Girl and Ron Jeremy, of course - was as real as it gets. Welcome to Exxxotica Miami Beach, a porn convention brimming with everything you would imagine at such a convention: posing porn stars; make-your-own-porn tutorials, complete with live demonstrations; the Bang Bus van parked at a booth; and gawking men toting cameras like lost tourists on their way to Disney World. Though it sounds like a great excuse, we - Jill, a journalist, and Ronna, a Miami Herald staff photographer - were actually there to do research to...

Tribeca: Tell us about Sexy Baby. How do you describe the movie in your own words? Jill Bauer: Whenever we get asked this question, we chuckle, because its synopsis really isn't a simple one-liner. But here's my attempt at an elevator pitch (but let's pretend we're in the Empire State Building elevator): Sexy Baby is a complex weave of characters and themes that explores the hot-button issues of sex, sexiness, self-image and today's newfangled click-of-the-mouse pornography. We think it's the first film to put faces to a seismic cultural shift. Our characters - Nakita, 32, Winnifred, 12, and Laura, 22 - show us how social media, digital photography/videography and easy-access porn have altered the way young women portray themselves and how both women and men perceive and have sex. One of the rewards (and drawbacks) of making an agenda-free film (which is what Sexy Baby is) is that the takeaway message is nuanced.

Possibly one of the scariest documentaries I’ve ever seen, Sexy Baby explores the over-sexualization of girls and women in the era of the Internet. Directed by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, the movie analyzes how social media, Internet porn and general pop culture are affecting the sexuality of women through the eyes of its three female subjects. There’s former porn actress Nichole (aka Nikita Kash) who’s trying to settle in to a more conventional life; precocious teen Winnifred, who’s struggling to come to terms with her own image and sexuality; and finally there’s Laura, who, after years of saving up for it, is ready to get the plastic surgery of her dreams – labiaplasty to be specific – so she can finally feel confident. The three stories attempt to answer the same question – what does it mean to be a woman in today’s hypersexual climate? Images that were once behind the curtain at...

“Sexy Baby,” a new documentary premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, is problematic from it’s early, explicit pornographic sequences to its bewildering final shot close-up of an actual newborn baby. Ostensibly, the narrator-less film uses the stories of three separate white girls to illustrate the indoctrination of female objectification and pornography at a young age, though their subject seems awfully broad, and their net entirely too small.
One story strand, the weakest in the film, follows Laura, a young model from Virginia (all three girls curiously hail from the East Coast, nearly a continent away from the heart of the porn industry). Laura can’t find happiness, and it’s due to the discomfort she finds in her thick labia. Labiaplasty proves to be the only option, and it’s interesting that she takes on two jobs, one of them teaching small children, because she is self-conscious about her...

Following up on last week's preview of the Tribeca Film Festival (site), this'll be the entry that'll carry us through to Sunday. Introducing Slant's package of reviews, Ed Gonzalez argues that Tribeca "has blossomed from a celebration of the Big Apple as a filmmaking center into a great facilitator and promoter of international film and video culture." The Los Angeles Times' Steven Zeitchik agrees that it's "a prime venue to discover international films." More packages and lists: Smithsonian Magazine's Daniel Eagan ("What to See"), indieWIRE ("12 New Films We're Excited For"), Filmmaker's Scott Macaulay ("25 Films I'm Looking Forward To"), Movies.com ("20 Most Anticipated Movies"), Time's Lily Rothman ("Top 15 Chatter-Worthy Films"), Time Out New York and Twitch ("Top 15 Picks").

"Sexy Baby" is an important film. "Mansome" is not. It may be an unfair comparison, since Morgan Spurlock and Jeremy Chilnick’s latest documentary aims for comedy over substance throughout. But both films address the impacts and effects of insecurity among women ("Sexy Baby") and men ("Mansome") and thus make for an interesting pairing. Launching them at the Tribeca Film Festival, typically strong in its documentary programming, was a smart move not only because a good portion of their content takes place in New York City, but also, at least in the case of "Sexy Baby," because the setting provides a culturally influential place to start a serious discussion (see: "Bully"). Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus’ "Sexy Baby" had its world premiere Friday night at the AMC Lowes Village 7 in front of a packed crowd with a predictably female tilt. Fest co-founder Jane Rosenthal introduced the film with the...
