Medical truth it ain't
rgclosson-568-2320019 April 2019
I'm enjoying every episode of this now 7-year old series. Particularly now that many of the privacy-busting hacks are more relevant, if not more possible in 2019. But medicine is something I know a little about and the errors are shaking my addiction to the Kool Aid. In the emergency hallway the surgeon refers to a patient "swallow(ing) his tongue." Patients don't do that and no medical professional would say it. Later the Brit "Alex" commands the surgeon to give the patient "100 CCs of heparin" during the surgery. Heparin is available in many strengths and is dosed in units, not CCs (cubic centimeters). Later the surgeon surreptitiously draws up a syringe with probably less than 10 CCs of heparin. I'm only 18 minutes in.

Sophie's Choice

The Machine delivers the number of Leon Tao again, and Reese saves him from two thugs and brings Leon blindfold to Finch's hideout. When he arrives, Finch gives the number of the heart surgeon Dr. Madeleine Enright, who is considered to be the best in her field. They leave Bear watching Leon, while Finch poses as investor of the hospital and Reese sees Dr. Enright meeting her wife Amy in the cafeteria of the hospital. Soon the powerful Oliver Veldt arrives to be submitted to a secret heart surgery, and the whole floor is isolated for his safety. However, Dr. Enright is approached by the mysterious British Alistair Wesley, who threatens the life of Amy that is in a nearby square. He tells her to kill Veldt accidentally; otherwise, his operatives will kill Amy. Meanwhile, Fusco is investigating a murder scene and finds Carter's card in the pocket of the victim. He warns Carter, but she does not know who the victim is.

"Critical" is a tense episode of "Person of Interest", where a medical doctor has to make a Sophie's choice that will affect her life. The plot is well resolved by Finch and Reese. The participation of the guest star Julian Sands is a plus in the show. The gathering of Carter with Agent Snow is a promising of new problems to Reese in the near future. My vote is seven.

another cinema-worthy episode

In my many rambling reviews on IMDb I have tried to make the point that the change in technology has changed the very fabric of the content that we used to take for granted. Digital tech has made it possible to produce full length features on a shoestring, especially those horrific "found footage" scripts that actually fool the viewer into thinking that badly filmed material is part of the story. Meanwhile TV, once a joke in the industry, is getting sharper and sharper. And, as I said in another review of POI, JJ Abrams does not lend his name to just any old production, every aspect has to be top flight before his name goes on. The result is TV that in many cases is better than the cinematic equivalent, and this episode is a case in point. Of course, it only works if you know the characters. But the story starts hot and just builds and builds and builds. Julian Sand, one of the most reliable British heavies of his era, is brilliant. Fantastic episode. And oh yeah I like "Carter's" new hairdo.
