A fine production

The 1983 production of Il Trittico is a very good one, though my favourite Il Trittico is the 1981 one from the Met. Il Tabarro is a most excellent start to the production, quite possibly the best executed production of the three productions/one-act operas forming Il Trittico. I do think of the entire production that Il Tabarro had the best sets, slightly sparse, but very atmospheric and compact which is in perfect sync with the mood of the opera. The staging is compelling too, with a chilling ending and the right amount of intensity and passion. Puccini's music is just brilliant, and the orchestra play with such a rich and sometimes eerie sound. This is helped by the authoritative conducting. The performances are spot on, Nicola Martinucci, an impressive Calaf and Radames, is very appealing as Luigi and the supporting cast distinguishing themselves very well, but the standouts are Sylvia Sass as a dignified and moving Giorgetta and Piero Cappuccilli as a beautifully-sung and scary Michele. In conclusion, a fine production of the first opera of the operatic triptych Il Trittico. 9/10 Bethany Cox
