Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Hulu’s acclaimed new limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” is led by Logan Lerman. who give the best performance of his career. Adapted from Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same, the story follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family torn apart by WWII. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. He plays Addy Kurc, the middle child who pursues a career as a composer in post-war Paris. Critics agree, Lerman is a revelation in this role.
Proma Khosla (Indie Wire) stated: “As Addy, Lerman is siloed from the other siblings for almost the entire series, but never waivers in his portrayal of someone sustained by hope and eventually in the haze of grief.”

Prime Video’s Fallout has been receiving largely positive reviews, along with critical praise for the performances in the series. Aaron Morten is one such face that the audience familiarized through the series. The actor plays the role of Maximus, an ally to Ella Purnell’s Lucy, in the series. Fans believe that Aaron Morten closely resembles disgraced actor Jonathan Majors and that he could replace Majors as the MCU’s Kang.

Disney fired Kang actor Majors following his guilty conviction on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Marvel is looking to recast the role, with Colman Domingo and Jon Boyega being some of the names thrown around for the role.

Tom Ripley is getting another chance on the awards circuit. The sinister con artist, created by author Patricia Highsmith in a series of novels, is played by Andrew Scott in the new limited series “Ripley” from Netflix. A quarter-century ago a variation of the same story was told in Anthony Minghella‘s film “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” but while that iteration received five Oscar nomination, it was snubbed for Best Picture, and star Matt Damon was left out of Best Actor. Can Scott make up for that with a nom for Best Movie/Limited Actor?
Damon’s portrayal of Tom Ripley had more warmth to it, a sense of longing (“I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody”). He was a tragic monster who trapped himself in a web of lies and murder. Scott’s performance suggests someone more methodical and calculating.

Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

Riz Ahmed is now a Wes Anderson featured player.
The actor, last seen in Apple’s love drama Fingernails, has joined the roster of acclaimed auteur’s latest project, an untitled feature that is now shooting in Berlin.
Plot details are being kept in the breast pocket, but it is shaping up to be another ensemble piece with several of his usual cadre of artists.
Benicio Del Toro and Bill Murray are also on the call sheet for the project. The feature has a script from Anderson and Roman Coppola, who has worked on five of the filmmaker’s movies. Michael Cera, also cast in the picture, is among the other Anderson first-timers.
The project was at one point eying a fall 2023 start, but the twin strikes last year pushed the start of production.

Andrew Scott Shines, Yet ‘Ripley’ Lacks Vigor The latest iteration of Patricia Highsmith’s ‘Ripley’ novels, despite its aesthetic allure and Andrew Scott’s (‘Fleabag’) magnetic performance, fails to deliver a compelling narrative. The black-and-white cinematography beautifully captures the Italian landscapes and the statuesque cast, including Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning as Marge. However, the series struggles to find its footing beyond its visual appeal. Steven Zaillian, known for his work on ‘The Irishman’ and ‘The Night Of’, seems to have overlooked the essence of engaging television amidst crafting artful frames. Netflix’s ‘Ripley’ (★½ out of four), although visually

Tom Ripley is one of literature’s great con men, and Andrew Scott is a perfect choice to play him. The Fleabag and Sherlock actor is charming and has a sophisticated air… and yet there’s something a little off about him. (Even when he played a priest in Fleabag, he had a mischievous glint in his eye.) He slips effortlessly into the title role in Netflix’s Ripley — all eight episodes are now streaming; I’ve seen the first four — and the lush black-and-white cinematography is a joy to behold. The series is badly hampered by an overly deliberate pace,...

When is an already well-distinguished artist arguably underrated and still overdue for further and greater recognition? Well, 71-year-old writer/director Steven Zaillian, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter (“Schindler’s List”) and five-time nominee, is already regarded as one of the most celebrated screenwriters on the planet. Yet, following the release of the fabulous “Ripley,” his striking and haunting new Netflix series— not to mention in addition to his excellent and deeply undervalued 2016 series, “The Night Of” starring Riz Ahmed— Zaillian’s filmmaking career recognition merits an ascension to the level of venerated master.

Animals are everywhere in “Ripley.” From the opening flash-forward to the closing montage, the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels finds furry friends in frame after frame. Far from surplus scenery — Steven Zaillian’s elegant vision of ’60s era Italy does not lack for beauty — these creatures are active characters. A grazing sheep finds a clue. A prowling cat produces a lead. A snake eludes detection inside a pair of loafers — and yes, in this case, a reptile is also an animal because the snake in question is Ripley himself: a slippery, second-rate con man with a cold-blooded stare, slicked-back locks, and vice-like grip on his prey. Embodied by Andrew Scott, Ripley follows a familiar pattern yet takes a distinct shape. He’s older, but not wiser; meaner, but more level-headed; greedier, but almost purely so.
This “Ripley” is a different animal.
First introduced in Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,...

The “corpsicle,” as it’s been dubbed since “Night Country” author Issa López first wrote the scene, is a shocking sight to behold. Twisted naked bodies, frozen in ice, have been carved from their original resting place and plopped at the center of a hockey rink to thaw. How did they die? Why are they naked? Who — or what — did this to them? As the ice melts, secrets spill out and the dead’s last moments gain gruesome clarity. Frostbite blackens their extremities. Teeth marks cover their skin. One is bleeding from the ears. Another is missing the fingers he’d used to claw out his own eyes.
Despite its vividly unique rendering, the corpsicle is still strangely familiar. Here are these dead naked men, ornately displayed by natural elements, unable to shield themselves from the discerning eyes of the detectives investigating their demise. You can’t help but stare,...

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.

Rapace plays an astronaut who returns to Earth after a stint on a space station and finds that her life has changed in a number of small, subtle ways.
In his best world-weary "go home, Walter" voice, Banks explains that astronauts have a tendency to become "unstuck" after spending too much time in space.
What does that mean, exactly?
Well, we guess we'll have to watch the spacy drama unfold to find out!
It's tough to discern much about the plot from the trailer, but it looks like the series will enter supernatural horror territory as it progresses.
There's some weirdness involving Rapace's daughter, and the trailer delivers some genuinely spine-tingling creepy kid moments.

Andrew Scott is receiving accolades for his work in All of Us Strangers. Despite being the dark horse at the awards shows under the shadow of larger profile nominations, Scott’s recognition is adding to the fuel of his career fire. Scott is now taking up the identity of Thomas Ripley in the new Netflix limited series, Ripley. Netflix has just released the teaser which is showcasing the beautiful and moody black and white aesthetic of the show. The project comes from Steven Zaillian, who had also created, directed and executive produced the hit HBO show, The Night Of, as well as penning films like The Irishman, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gangs of New York.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,

We've come a long way since Andrew Scott chewed up the scenery and forever altered our brain chemistry during those early "Sherlock" days, haven't we? The ultra-charismatic actor once best-known for his role as Moriarty has since played another bad guy (to somewhat diminishing returns) in 2015's "Spectre," stole all our collective hearts and minds in Prime's "Fleabag" series opposite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and further doubled down on his romantic leading man status most recently in "All of Us Strangers." Now, apparently, the time has come to go full brooding antihero.
"Ripley" always felt like a slam-dunk adaptation of author Patricia Highsmith's various books following the character of Tom Ripley, especially following in the footsteps of the 1999 movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley" starring Matt Damon in the title role. Yet even garnering multiple Academy Award nominations and proving a hit at the box office at the time does little to...

Jeremy Allen White’s career is seeing the temperature rise as his show, the acclaimed series The Bear, has been picked up for a third season on its network, FX. Additionally, the actor is receiving a bevy of praise for his upcoming film, The Iron Claw, which is a drama depicting the tragic story of the professional wrestling family, the Von Erichs. When young actors see their stars rise and many projects come across their trajectory, studios aim to capitalize on their growing stardom by featuring them in a big tentpole franchise. White once met with Venom‘s Riz Ahmed, who gained acclaim for his performance from The Night Of before becoming the symbiotic rogue of Tom Hardy’s comic book film. Ahmed would ask White, “When are you going to do a Marvel thing?”
According to Variety, White had actually met with executives for a major Hollywood tentpole film before.

A drug dealer was sentenced to ten years in prison for the death of actor Michael K. Williams.
Irvin Cartagena was sentenced for conspiring to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analog, according to a news release by the United States Attorney’s office. Cartagena was one of four men charged with being part of a drug trafficking ring that sold the fatal fentanyl-laced heroin to Williams.
Cartagena and the other three defendants, Hector Robles, Luis Cruz and Carlos Macci have been leading a drug operation since 2020, according to investigators.
Cartagena was the person who conducted the “hand-to-hand transaction” with Williams. Despite knowing that Williams’ had died likely from the fentanyl-laced heroin, he and his co-conspirators continued to sell the deadly heroin. Netflix’s new techno chiller T.I.M. follows a career-conscious woman called Abi as she moves into a new smart home with her seemingly not-very-trustworthy husband Paul. Even as she tries to make an impact with her new employer, he decides to gift her a “Technologically Integrated Manservant” (T.I.M.) to fuss around the house and help her out while she’s busy at work. T.I.M. might be the creepiest robot version of Alexa possible!
It’s not long before T.I.M. is taking it upon himself to do more than re-up groceries and sweep the floors, becoming obsessed with Abi and having a marked distaste for her formerly wayward husband. Things soon spiral out of control in the spotless smart home while Abi is distracted by the wild demands of her boss. Can T.I.M. be stopped from doing something deadly before it’s too late?...

Igor Martinovic is an Emmy-nominated cinematographer whose work includes “House of Cards,” “The Night Of,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and the Showtime limited series “George & Tammy,” but the best advice he ever got was not from a fellow cinematographer, a teacher or even a director he was working with.
Instead, Martinovic told TheWrap, it came from “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull” screenwriter and “American Gigolo” and “First Reformed” director Paul Schrader, in an interview Schrader gave about what he and director Martin Scorsese were trying to do when they made “Taxi Driver.”
“He was talking about (Robert De Niro’s character) Travis Bickle, and he said they were trying to make a documentary of Travis’ mind,” Martinovic said. “That was the idea that taught me the most about filmmaking, the idea that you’re actually making visuals that represent somebody’s state of mind.

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

A drug dealer linked to actor Michael K. Williams’ 2021 overdose death has been found guilty, with a sentence that will put him in prison for less than three years.
On Tuesday, a judge determined that a 71-year-old man “not only cost Mr. Williams his life, but it’s costing your freedom,” pointing to the dealer continuing to sell drugs even after news of Michael K. Williams’ overdose broke. However, the Associated Press noted that the man, Carlos Macci, was “not charged directly in the actor’s death.” Macci had nearly two dozen prior convictions.
Prior to the decision, David Simon – who created The Wire, in which Michael K. Williams starred as Omar Little and knew the late actor well – urged the judge to consider leniency in the sentencing related to the actor’s overdose death. “What happened to Mike is a grievous tragedy…But I know that Michael would look...

When the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney both had the honor of seeing their names come up twice. In addition to landing slots in the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup for “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria,” respectively, Seehorn (“Cooper’s Bar”) also competed for Best Short Form Actress while Sweeney (“The White Lotus”) was included among the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress contenders. Since neither of them had been recognized by the TV academy before, they became part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated Emmy first-timers.
Neither Seehorn nor Sweeney succeeded on either of her bids, but that isn’t surprising given the fact that only six of this group’s two dozen members have actually pulled off wins. Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.
Not Fisher Stevens.
After minor roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel (a concierge), Isle of Dogs (the voice of a mutt called Scrap) and The French Dispatch (an unnamed magazine story editor), he’s now set to make a similarly background appearance in Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest, and featuring arguably the director’s most ludicrous array of top-tier talent to date (a list so long, it may test the wide lenses of Cannes’ red carpet paparazzi when it bows May 23). And very happily so.
