The movie genre of actions is often associated with the male leading characters who fight for the world’s peace or power. However, there are some female action leads who make their movies stand out among the great number of the genre’s features.
Here are 7 of the most memorable female-led action movies, chosen by Redditors.
Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
This martial arts feature probably comes first to mind in this respect, as Uma Thurman’s Bride is one of the most deadly and cultish onscreen assassins in history. Everyone saw Quentin Tarantino’s timeless masterpiece at least once in their lives, and it’s worth it.
Aliens (1986)
Long before the modern action heroines, 38 years ago, Sigourney Weaver starred as the courageous survivor of an alien attack, Ellen Ripley, who manages to go head-to-head with the Xenomorph and defeat it, unlike the great number of people around her.

The Magic of Movie Stunts Illuminated in The Fall Guy ‘The Fall Guy’ is not just a film; it’s a dynamic celebration of the thrilling, often unseen art of movie stunts. Directed by the accomplished stuntman-turned-director David Leitch, known for his work on action-packed films like ‘John Wick’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’, this movie offers an insider’s view into the perilous, adrenaline-fueled world of stunt performers. In a heartfelt moment reflecting on the essence of the film, David Leitch expressed satisfaction with his team’s exceptional efforts: First of all, we were really blessed to get the people that we wanted. Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

To understand the love letter that is “The Fall Guy” — a passion project of former stunt performer turned A-list action director David Leitch — consider that Drew Pearce couldn’t write the script until Leitch identified the old-school stunts that would serve as its centerpieces.
IndieWire talked to Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara about four of those jaw-dropping action scenes: the record-breaking cannon roll on the beach, the 225-foot car jump, the helicopter high-fall, and the boat jump. The personal and creative stories of how they came about are almost as gripping as the scenes themselves.
The Cannon Roll
After his accident, stunt double Colt Seavers’ (Ryan Gosling) first stunt is a big one: an explosion that sends his Jeep into a cannon roll. It was so big that Gosling’s own stunt double, Logan Holladay (who is seen on screen buckling Gosling into the Jeep), broke the Guinness World Record with eight-and-half rolls.

The Fall Guy is kicking off summer movie season with a No. 1 debut at the box office this weekend, but it’s coming in below initial tracking. After earning $10.4 million on Friday, the feature is now projected to open to $28 million for the weekend, down from earlier tracking that had it in the $30-$35 million range.
The film earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences, so it’s possible word of mouth could help the movie make up ground in the coming weeks. The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million when accounting for incentives for shooting in Australia. Overseas, it is projected to take in another $25.8 million over the weekend, which would bring its global haul to $65.4 million. (It already opened in some markets last week.)

Ryan Gosling is back at the box office, but he’s ditching his “Barbie” fur coat for a stuntman’s jumpsuit.
His latest movie, “The Fall Guy,” has arrived in theaters and made $3.15 million in Thursday previews at the box office.

This article contains massive spoilers for "The Fall Guy."
Stunt work is all about selling an illusion. When the medium of cinema was first invented, it was initially marketed and thought of as something akin to a sideshow attraction, a wondrous magic trick where a series of pictures put next to each other and illuminated in rapid succession gave the illusion of movement. After this initial novelty gave way to artists utilizing the medium to tell stories, the craftspeople making movies realized that the concept of illusion extended to every aspect of filmmaking.
Where theatre was traditionally bound to a stage or perhaps a circus tent, the movies could expand the canvas of what could be done physically — if cameras could capture it, it could be performed. It's no surprise, then, that films saw people like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and others push the boundaries of physicality and feats of derring-do in the cinema.

In “The Fall Guy,” Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, the stunt double for Hollywood action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Seavers, like “The Fall Guy” director David Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara, got his professional start as a stunt performer before 1999, when “The Matrix” served as a turning point for the profession.
“When my generation came in, ‘The Matrix’ was a big influential time in my career as a stunt performer,” said Leitch on the IndieWire Toolkit podcast. The director worked as a stunt performer on Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s 1999 groundbreaking film. “I learned [and] became heavily exposed to wire work.”
Not only did “The Matrix” successfully integrate wire work, which had become a staple in 1980s and ’90s Hong Kong action films when they hired legendary Chinese fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, but the film broke ground in combining practical stunts with visual effects.

David Leitch Says He Pitched Brad Pitt As Cable & ‘Deadpool’ Meetings Were Initially About ‘X-Force’
Ever since co-directing the “John Wick” franchise in 2014 and then splitting off on his own from partner Chad Stahelski, filmmaker David Leitch has been one of the most in-demand action directors on the planet. Almost taking the most recent “Jurassic World” reboot before rethinking it ultimately, since ‘John Wick 1,’ Leitch has directed a “Fast And Furious” spin-off, “Atomic Blonde,” “Bullet Train,” “Deadpool 2,” and his upcoming film “The Fall Guy” which opens tomorrow and stars Ryan Reynolds and Emily Blunt.

Producer Kelly McCormick isn’t prone to counting chickens before they hatch, especially when they come in the form of $125 million blockbusters built around the long-gestating resurrection of some classic TV IP. But, given the critical affection already poured on her latest, “The Fall Guy,” and the apparent readiness of the moviegoing public to see a tentpole that truly has it all (plus stunts so massive they are already literal world record-breakers), it might be time for McCormick to start thinking “franchise potential” right now.
As co-founder of the production and action design company 87North — along with her husband, “The Fall Guy” director David Leitch — McCormick is a major player in the action space. Man, does she have fun with it. She’s produced everything from “Bullet Train” and “Atomic Blonde” to “Nobody,” along with executive producing “Deadpool 2” and “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.”

Despite David Leitch’s background as a stunt actor and coordinator, not to mention the fact that his co-directorial debut, John Wick, set a bar for hard-hitting action, there’s been a certain weightlessness to every film he’s made since his sophomore film, Atomic Blonde. From Deadpool 2 to Bullet Train, they all glide along as briskly and smoothly as, well, a bullet train. They’re sleek, sure, but they’re also free of any heft or tactile quality.
The Fall Guy, then, is a modest improvement, in that there’s at least a sense of physicality to some of its action sequences, though that’s to be expected: As this is a film about the making of a movie, so much of the action that we’re watching has yet to be beefed up by chaotic editing and CGI noise. And thanks to magnetic performances by Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt,...

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, two essential ingredients in the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, will leave Barbieland and Los Alamos behind them as they team up for “The Fall Guy.” But will audiences turn up in force to see the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” stars when their new action comedy debuts this weekend?
Well, “The Fall Guy” isn’t going to hit those films’ box office heights, but it should have no trouble topping charts as it kicks off the summer movie season. The film is expected to earn north of $30 million, with some rival studio executives pegging the opening at between $35 million to $40 million. The catch is that movie wasn’t cheap to produce, boasting a healthy budget of $130 million, so “The Fall Guy” will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to leg it out on the long path to profitability. It will also need to do well overseas. “The Fall Guy...

And as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan Gosling, star of the new film was on hand to treat the invited audience to the first look at the stunts and the stunt men and women who make it all possible. In the vast world of action movies, few genres are as popular and captivating as superspy/assassin flicks that follow highly-trained professionals on a mission. There’s something special about the atmosphere of distrust, political scheming, and ridiculously high stakes that comes with this subgenre, and the audience is all over it.

It's no secret that the first third of 2024 has been at best uneven as far as the box office goes. Ticket sales are lagging way behind this same point in 2023, in no small part thanks to movies like "Abigail" and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperforming on the same weekend. Thankfully, the summer movie season is on the horizon and Hollywood, as well as theater owners, will hinge their hopes on a varied slate being able to sell an outsized number of tickets. That all begins next weekend with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy." The question is, can Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt strike gold in the summer season once again after last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon?
"The Fall Guy" will be the first blockbuster to hit theaters in May, which typically ushers in the summer for Hollywood. Currently, the big-budget action/comedy is looking at an opening weekend in the $40 million range,...

It’s been seven years since the release of Atomic Blonde, the action thriller starring Charlize Theron as top-level MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton. As the film was a box-office and critical success, it begs the question: where the hell is the sequel? Atomic Blonde screenwriter Kurt Johnstad isn’t sure what’s going on with a followup, but he recently told CinemaBlend that he always envisioned Lorraine’s story as a trilogy.
“To me, I always said that’s a trilogy,” Johnstad said. “You could tell three of those, and I hope they crack it. If they need some help, they know where to find me.“
Charlize Theron confirmed that a sequel was in the works in 2018, with her production company, Denver & Delilah Productions, heading up the project. Johnstad hasn’t heard anything from them, saying that it’s possible “they may have gone to another writer, they may have a draft.

In a promotional video shared Thursday, “Fall Guy” actor Hannah Waddingham presents the live-show idea as a pitch to Gosling, Blunt and David Leitch, the director of the movie and a former stuntman. Leitch says “I smell a live show!” after seeing the still of Blunt and Gosling riding a motorcycle next to a shark and a bus full of Universal Studio goers.

James McAvoy is rare among this new young breed of actors, as he has the ability to shift between offering heartbreaking sensitivity (“Atonement”) to displaying some serious action chops (“Atomic Blonde” and “Wanted”). The ability to toggle between these two attributes in such films as “The Last King of Scotland,” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and as the young Professor X in several films in the “X-Men” series that has made him internationally one of the most in-demand actors in the world.
Not only is McAvoy versatile in the kind of projects he selects, but he delivers, having earned two BAFTA nominations for his performances in “The Last King of Scotland” and “Atonement,” and a Golden Globe nom for “Atonement” as well.
Let’s raise up a glass to that great Scot with our photo gallery, which ranks his 10 greatest film performances from worst to best.

Charlize Theron proved to be a fine action star appearing in Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and several other remarkable action-packed films. But doing action movies is not always easy, and Theron has endured the nightmarish effects of it on her body and mind.

Still, there is no stopping for the actor. She puts herself up to every challenge possible despite the inherent cons attached to it. On-set injuries are not new to the actor as she was almost paralyzed after a neck injury after filming a scene in the 2005 Karyn Kusama-directed sci-fi action flick, Æon Flux. But she sustained permanent damage to her body after working in a film by the John Wick director.

“The Fall Guy,” an upcoming action comedy starring Ryan Gosling as a movie stunt double, is a celebration of the artisans behind our favorite action films.
Chris O’Hara was the head of the stunt department on “The Fall Guy,” a position that is traditionally recognized with the credit of stunt coordinator and often accompanied by a second unit director credit, both of which are titles officially recognized by the Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America. But Universal announced on April 9 that O’Hara would receive the first-ever “stunt designer” credit, a title “The Fall Guy” team hopes will better encapsulate the multifaceted nature and artistic contribution of the job.
“Stunt Designers are the creative architects behind fight scenes, high falls, and more, and deserve to be recognized for the creative leadership of their contributions,” said “Fall Guy” director David Leitch in a press release. “Universal’s decision to...

No one, including Warner Bros, was prepared for how successful “The Matrix” would be when it hit theaters on March 31, 1999. Only the second film by the Wachowski siblings (their first being the low-budget indie “Bound”), it would go on the be the fourth highest grossing film of the year, and a cultural phenomenon that became part of our lexicon.
The movie’s success would also mark a number of shifts happening in the industry. The diverse approach to casting by the Wachowskis, and their casting directors Mali Finn and Shauna Wolifson, took in building their ensemble helped redefine who could be an American action star, as Hollywood was desperate to move away from its already stale reliance on brawny white males, whose bulging muscles justified their physical prowess. The Wachowskis’ philosophy-inspired script helped usher in an era of narrative gravity and complexity in how studios approached the world-building storytelling of studio IP.

Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are the Barbenheimer comedy duo we didn’t know we’ve been waiting for in The Fall Guy. Trailer number two shows off more of the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt while also delivering more action, more humor, and enough shirtless Gosling scenes to keep audiences satiated until the film’s theatrical release on May 3, 2024.
Joining Gosling and Blunt in the action comedy are Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Winston Duke (Black Panther franchise), and Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
Drew Pearce (Hobbs & Shaw) wrote the screenplay, stuntman David Leitch directed, with Leitch, Gosling, Kelly McCormick, and Guymon Casady produced. Executive producers include Pearce, Geoff Shaevitz, and the creator of the original Fall Guy television series, Glen A. Larson.

As Ryan Gosling took the mic for a special screening of his latest film “The Fall Guy,” the Oscar nominee was eager to salute the stunt community — in particular, to show off the record-breaking stunt that his double performed.
“There’s a gentleman who buckles me into a car — that’s Logan Holladay — for a stunt he’s about to do,” Gosling told the audience assembled at the Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Then he goes on to do eight-and-a-half cannon rolls, which is a world record. And then he pulls me out of the car and pats me on the back for the stunt that he just did.”
That’s what makes “The Fall Guy” unique, Gosling explained. “In any other movie, you wouldn’t know that. But in this movie, you do. The lack of recognition [of] the contribution that they make to cinema, to some of...

The upcoming The Fall Guy, in theaters on May 3rd, and a salute to stunt people, had it’s premiere at SXSW earlier this week.
AP reported:
The SXSW premiere of “The Fall Guy” came with some of its own stunts. A pair of motorcycles sped through the crowds milling outside the Paramount Theater before Blunt and Gosling arrived in the back of a pick-up. Blunt and Gosling weren’t the only ones fresh from the Academy Awards. Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, (a producer on “The Fall Guy”) produced a clip reel of stunts for the telecast. Though stunt performance isn’t an Oscar category (a sore point that comes up in “The Fall Guy”), Leitch thinks it will happen soon.

While he keeps busy directing action films, he also produces them, with two Leitch productions being Nobody and Violent Night, both of which were released by Universal Pictures. The Fall Guy isn’t just an ode to the daring world of stunt performers; it pushes the boundaries of cinematic action. Recently, Universal Pictures and 87North revealed a record-breaking feat achieved during filming. The movie boasts the highest number of consecutive cannon rolls ever performed in a single stunt.

Back in January 2024, it was reported that a seventh movie was in the works, with the studio looking to do a soft reboot of the franchise; the film probably won’t erase the events of the two previous trilogies, but a fresh start is what the producers are looking for, which is why Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard are not expected to reprise their roles.

“The Fall Guy” cannon-rolled into SXSW on Tuesday, injecting a big dose of star power and a movie that celebrates moviemaking into the Austin atmosphere as the festival reached its halfway point.
The Universal Pictures action-comedy stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt and Hannah Waddingham in a romantic comedy romp that bears no resemblance to the drama series that aired on ABC from 1981 to 1986. Gosling plays a veteran stuntman for a self-obsessed movie star who gets wrapped up in a murder plot and falls in love with a budding director.
“It was a love letter to stunts and to crews,” “Fall Guy” director David Leitch explained to the SXSW crowd after the film had its world premiere at Austin’s Paramount Theatre. Leitch noted that Gosling’s incredible versatility as an actor gave them a lot of room to expand the story.
“Ryan’s an amazing actor,” said Leitch, who previously worked as a stuntman.

The protagonist of David Leitch’s entertaining new action-comedy The Fall Guy doesn’t have many complaints about life as a stuntman. Sure, he does most of the hard work for half the recognition, but Colt Seavers (an ace Ryan Gosling) gets hype about jumping out of helicopters, diving off balconies and performing other dangerous physical feats that make movies look cool. He’s not an adrenaline junkie; he just understands the critical role stuntmen play on set.
Colt has been a stunt double for Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), an international superstar with a lethal combo of arrogance and insecurity, for six years. The two share the type of sacred bond that’s only possible with someone who is paid to risk major injury and possible death for you.

There's something so carefully and deliberately old school about "The Fall Guy," director David Leitch's blockbuster take on the television show of the same name, that allows it to feel revolutionary. Like a cry from another era, this is a major motion picture built on the hope that audiences will want to see a cast of attractive, charming, interesting actors bounce off each other on screen, trading barbs and dashing looks. There's no franchise-building here, and no ambitions beyond offering the audience primal, pure pleasures.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to sing — I promise” beamed The Fall Guy star Ryan Gosling to a crowded Paramount Theatre in Austin on Tuesday night.
He promptly received an immediate collection of “awws” and “boos” at the world premiere of the Universal title at SXSW. That’s not a bad thing: a number of people are still riding high from his Oscar performance of nominated song “I’m Just Ken.”
Similar to Amazon MGM’s Road House, this fire-ablazing, cars-a-crashing movie played to loud laughs and big cheers tonight. The start of summer during the first weekend of May is missing a Marvel film, but, wow, this action movie inspired by the hit 1980s TV show is a great backup plan.

The greatest art is meant to make you feel. Those feelings can range from laughter, fear, or sadness. The greatest feelings come from witnessing someone pour their heart and soul into their craft and that canvas exhibiting the passion for all to see. Monkey Man is Dev Patel’s passion project, and on Monday night at South By Southwest, the audience left feeling like they had just seen a masterpiece.
Monkey Man is a revenge thriller. Patel writes, directs, produces, and stars in Monkey Man. A film that went through production hell in 2020 and finally made its world premiere in Austin, Texas, for the SXSW festival this week. On the surface it may appear to be a different version of John Wick, like many other movies have attempted of late. But, beneath the action and brutal killings is something so much more.

Sofia Boutella has been in some of the most popular action films of the 2010s. She starred alongside Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde and played pivotal roles in other big-budget films such as The Mummy, Star Trek: Beyond, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. She is finally playing the lead in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon and its upcoming sequel.
Sofia Boutella played Ahmanet in Tom Cruise’s 2017 film The Mummy
Boutella’s breakout role out was in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service where she played the assassin named Gazelle. The actress did not have any former training in action and stunt work. However, her background as a dancer helped in convincing Vaughn for the role.

Rogue One and The Creator director Gareth Edwards is set to begin filming on his Jurassic World sequel on the 31st July. More here:
In the face of at least one major production setback that we know about, Universal is keen to get going on the next Jurassic World (or Jurassic Park) movie.
In early February, The Fall Guy and Atomic Blonde's David Leitch was announced as director, only for him to depart mere days later. In his place comes Gareth Edwards, whose terrific sci-fi thriller The Creator – his first film since 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – has since been nominated for an Oscar.
It now looks as though a Jurassic filming date has been set by Universal – as spotted by World Of Reel, the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s website lists its start date as the 31st July, 2024.
The timing makes sense given that, for reasons best known to the studio,...

Up on Variety a few months ago, there was an interesting interview with the German distributor of the Expendables and John Wick movies. Fred Kogel, who runs Leonine Studios, noted that all the top action heroes now, Keanu Reeves, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Harrison Ford, are the same ones we had in the eighties and nineties. But with Stallone and Ford in their late seventies, who will be the new action stars when the icons are done with the genre? For his part, Kogel doesn’t believe distributors and studios have done enough to build up a new crop of action heroes, noting that for the older stars, there was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor so that you could relate to that.” With CGI-laden superhero movies, Kogel believes that kind of identification is gone. “I think it...
