Exclusive: Sandbox Films (Fire of Love) and Xtr (Ascension) have teamed to produce feature doc A Life Illuminated, exploring the life and legacy of pioneering marine biologist Edie Widder, in association with ocean exploration nonprofit OceanX.
Set to direct the pic is Tasha Van Zandt, the filmmaker behind such award-winning documentaries as After Antarctica, about legendary polar explorer Will Steger, and One Thousand Stories, about renowned artist Jr.
A Life Illuminated watches as Widder undertakes an extraordinary journey into the magical world of bioluminescence, through which she decodes the language of light that allows deep-sea life to communicate in complete darkness. It’s Widder’s unceasing need to understand and communicate with the most enigmatic forms of life on Earth that leads her to dive into the unknown, exploring the profound mysteries hidden beneath the ocean’s surface.

Plan C is a timely documentary spotlighting a pro-choice non-profit organization called Plan C, which is dedicated to providing information, to anyone who wants to know, on the options for an unwanted pregnancy, and particularly about the medical abortion pill. The Plan C organization careful notes they are information providers, not abortion providers, but they do tell women facing an unwanted pregnancy how to contact doctors who will provide medical abortion pills, even by mail. When the organization was founded, abortion was legal in all states, under Roe v Wade, and medical abortion pills had been approved by the Fda. Post Roe, the landscape in which these activists – mostly women – do their work is completely different.

The question of why hangs over Plan C, a new documentary on efforts to expand access to medication abortion in the United States. Why seek a medication abortion? Because it’s safe, says one woman. Because of the comfort and safety of being in one’s own home, says another in a montage of phone calls seeking medication abortion by mail. Because the fear of facing screaming protesters at clinics, because her family’s military doctor refused to tie her tubes at 24, because “I felt more comfortable doing this at my own pace, at my own time”.
Pregnant people seeking abortion face a gauntlet of hurdles in the US, from cost to appointment scarcity to, depending on where one lives, the threat of prosecution. So, too, do providers, who because of the chaotic,...

There is more than one way to burn a book, Ray Bradbury wrote, and the world is full of people running about with lit matches. Texas House Rep. Steve Toth brandished the equivalent of a butane torch earlier this session when he introduced House Bill 2690, legislation that seeks to ban websites that contain information about abortion — but he and Texas Republicans may find it’s harder than they think to make speech they don’t like disappear from the internet.

"We are not going to become more quiet, we're going to become louder." This film is more important than ever right now. A trailer has debuted for an abortion rights documentary titled Plan C, from director Tracy Droz Tragos. It first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and it's also playing at SXSW right now in Austin, TX. "Plan C" is actually a secret grassroots organization that persistently fights to expand access to abortion pills across the USA keeping hope alive during a global pandemic and the fall of Roe v. Wade. The film is about what happens when abortion safety becomes a major issue for Americans, and how they continue to make a difference by doing what is right and just and necessary. It features the co-founders of Plan C, Francine Coeytaux and Elisa Wells, plus plenty of other special guests out on the front-line helping and supporting women.

The 2023 Athena Film Festival is set to open with a screening of Chinonye Chukwu’s acclaimed Till and close with the New York premiere of the timely Sundance selection Plan C.
The screening of Till, about how Emmett Till’s mother transformed her grief into a movement for justice, is just the latest in Chukwu’s history with the Barnard College festival focused on female leadership.
Her first film, Clemency, was on The Athena List, the festival’s Black List-inspired selection of best unproduced screenplays. That film also screened at the 2020 festival. And Athena launched the Chinonye Chukwu Emerging Writer Award in 2021.
And the Till screening comes after the acclaimed film surprisingly missed out on Oscar nominations including for star Danielle Deadwyler’s celebrated performance as Mamie Till-Mobley.

Even before last year’s Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade, a recent international surge in films about abortion rights and the endangerment thereof — from period pieces like “Happening” to present-day portraits like “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” — almost seemed to anticipate such a devastating blow. In America in particular, where talk of abortion access has always been snarled up in extreme religious rhetoric and eternal red-blue division, it has never been a subject to be treated complacently. Urgent and unvarnished, Tracy Droz Tragos’ documentary “Plan C” is an early entry in what might be considered post-Roe cinema, focusing less on pro-choice ideology than on the practicalities of ensuring choice in a system increasingly stacked against the idea.
Having premiered at Sundance last month — with SXSW next on its festival tour — “Plan C” arrives seven years after Tragos’ Emmy-nominated documentary “Abortion: Stories Women Tell,” which centered the individual narratives of...

Documentary-maker Tracy Droz Tragos’ timely, rousing latest feature Plan C represents a de facto sequel to her earlier work, 2016’s Abortion: Stories Women Tell in that both films revolve around one of the most contentious issues in American politics. But where Stories focused on the impact and experience of regular people terminating their pregnancy or those helping others to get a safe, legal surgical procedure, Plan C offers a portrait of those on the front line of the war over women’s right to choose: the founders and organizers who run Plan C. This grassroots organization advises women on the so-called abortion pills, and helps them acquire access to these drugs, which were recently declared safe by the Fda but are technically illegal in many states that have since banned abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

In post-Roe America, it goes without saying that there are a lot of obstacles to obtain an abortion. But even before legislation outlawed the procedure in certain states and made it difficult to access across the country, pro-choice activists have been fighting a lack of information.
Abortion can bring up so many questions: Where can I get one? When is the soonest I can get it? How expensive will it be? Is it safe? How do I talk to my partner about it? If I go to a clinic, will there be protesters there? Does getting an abortion make me a bad person? The organization Plan C aims to disseminate clear, correct knowledge about access to medication abortions, including which online pharmacies are legit and who you can call with questions during the process.
