I can't describe how well written this was. This episode reminded me of Victory And Death, the final episode of the Clone Wars animated series, the way the story moved me.
The episode follows CT-9904 (Crosshair) being assigned to a familiar face's squadron. Commander Cody makes a appearance for this episode, no longer dawning the iconic orange armor, but a more gray and bleak armor. The mission at hand is simple: rescue a Imperial officer being held hostage on the Separatist planet of Desix by the governor.
The mission is action-packed, with droidikas and commando droids around every corner. B1 battle droids are very common and make for a fun episode to watch. At least half of Cody's squad is blown up by gunners and bombers even before they even land. Many times they "pop" the droidikas, basically disabling the shields.
When Crosshair finds out that the commanding droid is in the belltower, he and Cody head up, fighting the waves of commando droids. When they eventually destroy the final few droids and the commanding droid, the governor steps out of the corner and has the officer at gunpoint. She tells Cody to stop having the Empire come to their planet and try to take control.
With the bit of humanity left in him, he puts down his blaster and takes off his helmet. He says that they can do this peacefully, letting go of the officer and leaving. The governor agrees, letting go of the officer. As the officer thanks Cody, he sharpy and supringly tells him to shoot her. Cody doesn't want to, having just resolved the conflict. He stalls and is yelled at by the officer "That's an order!!"
While this is happening, a shot goes through the governor's chest. Crosshair standing there, his smoking barrel near his face. The final parts of the Desix mission are hard, as hundreds of clones arrive to take control of the city.
Crosshair and Cody meet back at a memorial for the war, where Cody talks about the mission and purpose. He says:
"You know what the difference between us and those droids is? We can make our own decisions."
(This is not the full quote)
This really stuck with me until Crosshair is assigned another mission, but not with Cody. When Crosshair asked why not with Cody, the officer responded by saying he went AWOL (Absence Without Official Lead) and to not talk about him. That one part was sad, as it showed that Cody's struggles and guilt caught up to him, leading to him leaving the Galactic Empire. The episode ends with Crosshair walking down a corridor while slowly putting on his helmet.
This episode shows the mortality that was resented by Order 66, showing how the one situation sparked such feelings strong. Dave Filoni, you've done it again.
