Romantic comedies are back, baby! After the success of Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s Anyone but You and Lindsay Lohan’s Irish Wish, studios’ wallets are pitter-patting for amor with a touch of giggle juice. Netflix is coming into Monday with a first look at the streamer’s upcoming romantic comedy A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King.
Richard Lagravenese directs A Family Affair from a screenplay by Carrie Solomon. The tangled web of emotions revolves around a surprising romance that kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother, and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity. Liza Koshy and the legendary Kathy Bates also star.

Ariana Grande’s seventh album begins with a question she spends the rest of the album trying to answer: “How can I tell if I’m in the right relationship?” Five years ago, on her landmark album on Thank U, Next, it seemed certain that she would have that question figured out by now; in the bridge of that album’s title track, she sang about hoping that when she would eventually walk down the aisle it would be her first and last time.

“What looks at first to be remarkable, bizarre, will soon reveal itself to be part of a pattern,” sings Ethan Dobson (Ben Levi Ross), a just-out-of-Princeton wünderkind, at the start of the new musical The Connector, as he lands a coveted job writing features for a legendary magazine. And though he explains that the lyric is a quote from the venerated founder of the titular magazine, what’s quickly revealed is that it’s Ethan himself who’s remarkable, bizarre, and part of a pattern we’ll soon recognize all too well.
That pattern, especially as exposed under the blazing spotlight shone by Robin Martinez (Hannah Cruz), an overlooked female Latina staffer at the magazine and the musical’s blistering narrator, is nothing less than the patriarchy. “Half the stories of the world are left unwritten/Half the stories of the world are kept unread,” Robin protests in “Cassandra,” the...

Dunki Box Office Collection (3 Day Total) Second Best In The Last 5 Years (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki was expected to be another box-office marvel after Pathaan and Jawan, but at the moment, nothing of that sort is happening. The genre of the Rajkumar Hirani film is the major differentiating factor here. Still, the film is not earning on the expected lines and has currently touched the 75 crore mark.
However, the film could have surely done better. It was also expected that it might pick after word of mouth. Now the aim is to cross the 100 crore mark as soon as possible, and probably, with the Christmas holiday, the film could pick up better.
Going by the data, Dunki still might be the second-best film since 2018 to have collected 75 crore in three days! Yes, Shah Rukh Khan’s film managed to earn the consolation prize. But guess who could Dunki not beat?...

"Futurama" is an animated comedy, yes, but it's also a show that takes its science very seriously. As nonsensical and absurd as some storylines can be, the writers' room on the series also boasted actual scientists to make sure things made theoretical sense. They were so good, "Futurama" often predicted the future. During the "Futurama Live!" post-show with Nerdist following the series' original finale, the creative team was asked if the science ever got in the way of a storyline. As it turns out, it did.
"I was working on a story with one of our writers, Josh Weinstein [...] We were working on this very complicated story where this character showed up who was living backward in time and talking backward and moving backward, and we worked on it for like three days and it was the coolest science fiction story, but there was nothing funny about it whatsoever," said showrunner David X. Cohen.

Exclusive: We hear that Amazon in a competitive situation has taken the Jennifer Lopez-produced Skydance TV series Backwards in Heels off the table.
The show will be written and directed by Oscar nominee Richard Lagravenese and follows the aspirational and timeless story about the glamourous women living at the Barbizon Hotel in post-wwii New York City.
Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina will produce under their Nuyorican Productions. Julie Goldstein is also producing.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost are producing for Skydance TV.
The Barbizon Hotel, located at 140 East 63rd St. on the Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was for several decades a female-only residential hotel for young women who came to NYC for professional opportunities. Built in 1927, the 23-story hotel was a blend of Italian Renaissance and late Gothic revival and Islamic decorative elements. No men were allowed above the ground floor, and strict dress and conduct rules were enforced.

In season one, Viscount Bridgerton was less hero than impediment. The eldest Bridgerton son, he assumed responsibility for the matches of his younger siblings Daphne and Colin, and spent the season throwing his weight around – sometimes literally in the case of the punch-up and dual with Daphne’s suitor Simon. Anthony attempted to control everybody else’s marriage responsibilities while refusing to face up to his own. His mistress Siena Rosso eventually made the decision for him, recognising that an opera singer with her past would never be found respectable enough to become a society Viscountess. Siena moved on, and urged Anthony to do the same.
In season two, Anthony’s search for a wife is centre-stage, making actor Jonathan the romantic lead. It’s not the first time the actor has told a love story in his established stage and screen career, which started in his childhood with the Royal Shakespeare Company,...

At the risk of overgeneralizing, why is it that cheapie musicals are so much more charming to watch on screen than they are when some friend invites you to whatever way-off-Broadway show they’ve managed to get mixed up in? Heck, these tiny film projects are often more endearing than the relatively big-budget ones the Hollywood studios produce. I’ll take “Colma” over “Cats” any day, and would watch “Once” ten times before sitting through “Into the Woods” again.
Big and bombastic works great on stage, but tends to look garish and awkward on screen, whereas scrappy tuners somehow feel more sincere when the camera can go in for a closeup, à la “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Hello Again.” That strategy — of letting the actors’ faces sell the emotion behind frequently corny lyrics — saves the day in Jack Danini’s “Ode to Passion,” a micro-budget contemporary rock musical...

To each of these incredible films we say, “Bravo.”

The life of circus entrepreneur P.T. The BBC has commissioned a feature length documentary about country music legend Dolly Parton, it announced Wednesday. The documentary, tentatively titled “Dolly’s Country” will air on BBC Two this fall as part of a season of programs dedicated to country music. The broadcaster announced earlier in the day that it had acquired Ken Burns’ upcoming PBS documentary series “Country Music,” which will air on BBC Four as part of the season.
“Dolly’s Country” promises to uncover a very different Parton “a Dolly that is no less extraordinary, but far more authentic and far more surprising.” It reveals the genius songwriter behind the glamor; the private individual who reveals all in her lyrics; the modern feminist who doesn’t want to be called a feminist.
The film is directed and produced by Francis Whately, best known for his trilogy of documentaries about David Bowie “Five Years,” “The Last Five Years” and “Finding Fame,...

We’re accustomed to horror movies using creativity and artistry to cover up their low budgets; a filmmaker can create plenty of scares with one set and a cast of four. The low-budget musical, on the other hand, is expected to provide splashy razzle-dazzle and grandeur with the same economy of means, and it’s a tougher genre to make succeed on a dime. That said, if you’re willing to overlook a little scruffiness at the edges, it’s a Christmas miracle that the Scottish import “Anna and the Apocalypse” works so well as both a horror movie and a musical.
And “Christmas miracle” should be taken literally, because this is a holiday movie as well. And if you don’t think the undead mix well with musical numbers and gaudy Yuletide decor, “Anna” might be the movie to change your mind.

Eugene Jarecki’s Politically Charged Elvis Doc ‘The King’ Is An Ambitious, Fascinating Mess [Review]
Just imagine the poor Elvis Presley fan settling in to watch “The King,” which is finally hitting theaters fifty years after his 1968 comeback special and a year after debuting at Cannes. She expects the usual: some celebratory interviews, the odd bit of backstage gossip, and some ripping concert footage of her beloved musical icon — much like David Bowie fans anticipated with HBO’s “The Last Five Years.” “The King” has some of that, of course.

Is Auli’i Cravalho sending in her audition for Steven Spielberg’s reboot of “West Side Story?”
The 17-year-old star of “Moana” and NBC’s “Rise” took the stage at McC Theater’s annual gala, Miscast, a fundraising event where Broadway stars perform songs from roles in which they would never be cast. Hence the name, and Cravalho’s song choice “Something’s Coming,” which is originally sung by male lead Tony.
The Disney Princess teased the NY crowd starting off with the ballad that made her famous, “How Far I’ll Go,” but jokingly backtracked to her scheduled programming after the first few lines.
Cravalho’s opening remarks also revealed that when she was sent a list of potential songs to choose for Miscast, she had never heard the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim number. “Don’t stone me please,” she pleaded with the theater crowd.

Francis Whately's documentary The Last Five Years, which debuts January 8th on HBO, takes a close look at David Bowie's final recorded documents, The Next Day and Blackstar. Instead of the usual procession of famous talking heads that appear in most music docs, the portrait quizzes his close collaborators on these last two albums – producer Tony Visconti, graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook, composer Maria Schneider and the Donny McCaslin-fronted jazz outfit that played on Blackstar. The movie toggles back and forth between decades, drawing connections between song lyrics from...

"A man on top of his game." HBO has unveiled the first brief teaser trailer for a feature-length documentary titled David Bowie: The Last Five Years, a profile of the late musicians final five years. The filmmaker behind this doc also made a film about the best five years of Bowie's life, and now will follow that up with this one, with seems to look back at his entire career and how it culminates in these final five years. The Last Five Years will chronicle the evolution of his music, and also focus on his final two studio albums: The Next Day from 2013, and Blackstar from 2016, which was released on Bowie's 69th birthday, just two days before his death. It will also examine his work on the rock stage musical "Lazarus", which he barely finished before dying. Whether or not you're a Bowie fan, this looks like an entertaining,...
