Anurag Kashyap at Cannes
Cannes has Kashyap written all over the Croisette. His production Udaan broke the seven year jinx at the prestigious festival in 2010. In 2012 he returned to the French Riviera as producer of Vasan Bala’s Peddlers at Critics Week while his two part Gangs of Wasseypur screened at Directors’ Fortnight. This year the tally goes further up with his productions Dabba and Monsoon Shootout, while he leads from the front with his Ugly. And that’s not all- he has also directed a segment of Bombay Talkies that has a gala screening to celebrate the 100 years of Indian cinema. For Cannes it seems like Indian cinema has become synonymous with Anurag Kashyap. Bikas Mishra speaks to the director in an exclusive interview.
What is Ugly about?
I don’t want to talk about Ugly. It’s just a thriller. I never narrated the script to anybody before...

Chennai, March 18: Poornima Ramaswamy headed straight to director Bala Pazhanisaamy's residence after hearing that she had won the National Award for best costume designer for Tamil period-drama "Paradesi".
"I'm honoured to receive a National Award for my debut film. How many would be blessed with such an honour for their first film? I'm on my way to Bala sir's house to share my happiness with him because had not it been for him, I would have been nobody," Poornima told Ians.
"Besides Bala sir, I have to credit my team that was involved in the research work for getting everything in place for my work. It is a period film.

Film: "Paradesi"; Actor: Atharva Murali, Vedhika C. Kumar, Dhansika, Udhay Karthik and Ritwika; Director: Bala; Rating: **** - a slice of reality.
Bala's "Paradesi" may not be as entertaining as any recent Tamil flick, but it is riveting, brutal and realistic as any film in a long time. For those seeking a realistic alternate from commercial Tamil cinema, this creation is a blessing.
In a small hamlet in Salur, reside hundreds of happy families in harmony, hope and optimism of a better future. One among them is Rasa (Atharva), who lives with his grandmother. He is the most obedient and hardworking male in the locality and earns.

This teaser for Bala's upcoming drama, Paradesi, has been making the rounds online since last night and the general consensus is, "What the fuck, dude?" The minute long behind the scenes teaser shows the director apparently being a prick to his actors in an effort to elicit "reality" from their performances. He beats and berates everyone in his immediate vicinity and ends the teaser with a shit-eating grin on his face. This newest attempt to market the film is perplexing a lot of people, though I have my suspicions about it's veracity. My best guess is that this is a weird, sure to be misunderstood, publicity angle attempting to prepare filmgoers for the brutality they're going to see in Paradesi. I seriously doubt that Bala, or...
