“Trump was indicted yesterday — and again — as Paula likes to remind me,” said Jane Rosenthal as she kicked off her speech Friday afternoon at the ninth annual Chanel Through Her Lens luncheon. The remark drew a roomful of boisterous cheers at New York’s The Odeon restaurant. “So, this seems like a good day for women.”
Paula is Paula Weinstein, and this pair of powerful women and best friends are the venerated one-two punch of the Tribeca Film Festival. Rosenthal, whose producing work includes The Irishman and The Good House, is one of the festival’s co-founders, while Weinstein — the producer behind The Perfect Storm, Grace and Frankie and other hits — has been the executive vice president at Tribeca Enterprises since 2013. For a man so often associated with heavy-hitting directors like Steven Spielberg and Peter Bogdanovich, producer and documentarian Frank Marshall has crafted classics of his own. From thrilling narrative features like “Arachnophobia” to intense documentaries like “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” Marshall is a storyteller who likes making films about storytellers.
Thus his latest documentary, “Rather,” which premieres Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival, is about a man who shaped the historical stories of the recent past: news anchor Dan Rather. “I like telling stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations,” Marshall told TheWrap. “It’s so interesting to see how these people who are inspired and then passionate about what they want to do, how they achieve that success.” In this case, Marshall wanted to track Rather’s 60-year career in news and how he’s become just as embraced by the TikTok generation...

It might sound like a backhanded compliment, but Downtown Owl feels more like a pilot than a feature film and may yet yield a series. In today’s market, that could work out just fine for directors Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe, who, after a choppy start, finesse Chuck Klosterman’s digressive 2007 novel into a thoughtful, broad-canvas ensemble piece. T Bone Burnett helps nail things down with an eclectic alt-country score and soundtrack, infused with the music and spirit of Elvis Costello, but it’s Rabe that holds it all together onscreen with a controlled yet still wildly uninhibited performance.
After a flashforward to a white-out blizzard in January 1984, the action winds back nine months to the summer of 1983, which is when English teacher Julia Rabia (Rabe) swaps urban Milwaukee for the backwater of Owl, North Dakota, to take up a post in a remote school on the recommendation of her father.

As often proves the case with talky indies, a single visual flourish in “Downtown Owl” emerges to ensure the film does not become a mere plot and dialogue delivery mechanism. Here, that’s the long lens shot, which flattens out images at the edges to incorporate more information in the visual field. The device serves as a clever translation acknowledging just how jam-packed the hyperliterate prose of the source material’s author, Chuck Klosterman, can be.

Some movies — many movies — are less than the sum of their parts. Downtown Owl, the story of a newbie teacher’s flailing and drinking and heartfelt, awkward encounters in a fictional North Dakota town, has the distinction of being precisely the sum of its parts. That’s not a knock; those ingredients are never less than engaging, driven by a playful and dynamic cinematic sensibility and a strong cast, Lily Rabe holding the center with vibrant luminosity and comic chops to spare. Rabe also steers the movie’s helm, alongside her life partner and fellow actor Hamish Linklater, and the tyro directors manage to thread a tricky needle with their first feature, navigating the chasm and the overlap between agitated and quiet, between cartoon brightness and angst.

For all involved, prolific author and cultural critic Chuck Klosterman’s 2008 book “Downtown Owl” sets the stage for a number of firsts. For starters, it’s Klosterman’s earliest fiction novel and is the source at the heart of Lily Rabe (“The Tender Bar”) and Hamish Linklater’s (“Midnight Mass”) joint directorial debut which just premiered at the Tribeca Festival.
If only the freshness associated with all these firsts was felt in the film by Rabe and Linklater, who are both creative collaborators and real-life partners. Instead, something feels stale, strange and out-of-focus right at the start of “Downtown Owl,” a cold and aimless 91-minute feature that makes its compact runtime feel anything but, while broadly navigating its small town rural tale with little insight and even less purpose.
The set-up of the script is promising enough, introducing us to the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota (Klosterman’s home...

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance. And the festival will close with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, the directorial debut of Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

Lily Rabe hive, our time has come. A film adaptation of Chuck Klosterman's novel "Downtown Owl" has been kicking around Hollywood for over a decade, with Adam Scott's Gettin' Rad Productions optioning the rights to the novel. All of that has changed, however, as Lily Rabe and longtime partner Hamish Linklater are making their co-directorial debuts with the adaptation. The story is set in the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota, following the intrinsically connected lives of three different characters -- the elderly Horace, depressed high school backup quarterback Mitch, and Julia, the new English teacher in town....

Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) has signed on for a role in the drama Downtown Owl, from Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films, Deadline can confirmed. He’s set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, Jack Dylan Grazer, August Blanco Rosenstein and Lily Rabe.
The feature directorial debut of Rabe and Hamish Linklater is based on Chuck Klosterman’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. It’s set somewhere in rural North Dakota in 1983, in the fictional town called Owl. There, you won’t find cable or pop culture, but you will find a downtown with a first-rate Chevrolet dealership, three bars and a new high school English teacher whose presence upends the lives of locals, just in time for a white-out blizzard for the ages.
Linklater wrote the script for the project, which was part of the Sundance Institute Creative Producing Summit and Talent Forum.

Henry Golding has joined the cast of the adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s Downtown Owl, the directorial debut of Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater.
The project, which is currently filming in Minnesota, comes from Sony’s Stage 6 Films label. Golding will appear alongside Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, Jack Dylan Grazer and August Blanco Rosenstein, as well as Rabe.
Linklater penned the screenplay based on Klosterman’s New York Times best-selling novel, which takes place in the fictional town of Owl, North Dakota, which is semi-isolated from the 1980s pop culture that surrounds it. The story follows three residents — an old man who spends his afternoons reminiscing in the local coffee shop, a depressed high school backup quarterback and a new English teacher at the local high school — whose lives, along with those of the town’s other residents, are upended by a whiteout blizzard.

What exactly can $625m in worldwide box office receipts buy you? A sequel script from a Black List screenwriter, if a new report from The Wrap is to be believed. The outlet shares that Oren Uziel (whose The Kitchen Sink made the 2010 Black List and is expected to go into production later this year) has been tapped to pen the “quietly” in development sequel to Sony’s 2012 Men in Black 3. Details on the Men in Black 4 are being (predictably) “kept under wraps,” but it’s probably safe to assume it will somehow involve Will Smith and some incarnation of Agent K (either Tommy Lee Jones or Josh Brolin, or maybe even both, imagine that fun) fighting aliens with wit and nifty tools. While you may not know Uziel’s name just yet, the writer is something of a hot commodity around Hollywood, as the scribe has also been tasked with co-writing the new Mortal Kombat movie...

Sony Pictures has hired Oren Uziel to pen the scripts for both Men In Black 4 and 21 Jump Street 2. Uziel, who is working with the studio to develop his black list script The Kitchen Sink, will write the 21 Jump Street sequel first before moving onto the next Men In Black film. Of course, details on both projects are being kept well under wraps at this point.
Though he currently doesn’t have much of a resume, Uziel has the aforementioned Kitchen Sink in development and he’s also working on a few other high profile projects. He’s been tapped to write the Mortal Kombat reboot, he’ll be adapting the novel Downtown Owl and he’s also writing Julius Onah’s God Particle for Paramount and Bad Robot. Clearly, this guy must be good if Sony is trusting him to pen two big sequels.
