Warning: Spoilers
as of now, i have watched the series being a true fan of sherlock as a character. in this episode we finally meet with the man who eventually reveals us viewers to the one thing us true sherlock fans have been waiting for from the very beginning of the show- the emergence of Sherlock's nemesis: Moriarty. episode is great, and has some nice twists in the plot- finally an unpredictable line of story! in the episode we get to meet an actor who brought his own familiar touch to the series. Vinnie Jones, a known actor from many series and movies plays a lot as a role of a hooligan, vulgar, soccer-fan-bully, tough guy character. in this episode, he plays M. the killer who sherlock presumed has killed Irene- as it turns out he was not aware of being set-up by the very man sent him to do the jobs, he was not aware of the connection between the tasks he was given by the true mastermind behind his actions- Moriarty. for a second i was actually afraid of Sherlock's reaction after having found the man who we first thought to have killed Irene- he was going to hunt him down, torture, and kill him. and his mind was set without hesitation. knowing he would probably succeed- for a moment i tried to figure where the plot might end up if sherlock had indeed killed M, calming myself that there would have been no way sherlock could get himself out of the mess he would have gotten himself into if he had killed M, when Watson knew without a doubt sherlock was going to kill M, and later on finding out the location he chose to do so. when the police closing in, and sherlock being confident in his actions, there was a moment of pure uncertainty when i thought M had succeeded to persuade sherlock to spare him, claiming he was actually "the sack" and was not aware there was more to his action than he was aware, when a moment ago sherlock was consumed with the need of vengeance- not believing a word M says, that moment of uncertainty was amplified just at the moment i thought sherlock was going to let the man go- but stabbed him instead. at the moment i was so confused, i thought he had killed M anyway, decided to go "underground" for probably becoming a wanted man for killing someone (even if that someone killed 37 people) and to find out all there is about this Moriarty by himself. but the idea didn't make sense. it all clears out when they show up at the station with a made up story to cover things up -eventhough Watson, (who by now we notice to have made some progress and learned to pick up more and more small details on the way, becoming sharper, more aware, more deductive, and capable of reaching the right hidden-from-plain-sight conclusions) did notice a slight mismatch between the stab wound itself and the way M explained he got this wound, and knew there was more to it.- this episode made me crave for what's to come next with anticipation!

Joan is insufferable
helenahandbasket-9373415 November 2019
I've just recently been rewatching the series and realized something that nagged at me originally but was never quite sure of previously; Joan is cloying, annoying and an incredibly obnoxious.

She's constantly questioning Sherlocks motivation, exposing him to others because she's very poor at her job as a sober companion, and never misses an opportunity to pour laborious amounts of condescension into every line uttered.

This episode is a bit over the top for Sherlocks 'retribution'; given his supposed proclivity to law enforcement and justice, as well as the Moriarty storyline, it was and always has been so contrived.

The more I watch, the less I care for Joan and her incessant need for attention. This could have been a great show, but borders on likable and a guilty pleasure.
