- Mundane, rich, globetrotting aristocrat Karel returns to his Slavic hometown for Christmastide with his simpleton kid brother Nosel. Karl is generally seen as the ideal wedding catch, but unwilling to commit, so he takes Nosel's cue to set the would be-fiancees three presumably impossible tasks to win him. Orphan Marie, her stepmother's virtual domestic, is ordered to complete the quests and hand the results to spoiled-rotten stepsister Flora, who then would wed Karl for his fortune. Each task requires a plant out of season, but since kindhearted Marie released a pet hare from a trap, she has the favor of the circle of the 12 Month Guardians, who live on a nearby mountain and grant seasonal deviations, but also extra enchantments. While Nosel is thus accidentally besotted with Flora, Karel gets wind of the truth.—KGF Vissers
