In what is shaping up to be a muted weekend at the box office, Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Hashira Training” earned $1.8 million in Thursday previews, while Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” picked up a paltry $285,000.
The weekend’s other new release, Focus Features’ comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” didn’t report preview grosses, which does not augur well for its commercial prospects. Despite the influx of movies, “Bob Marley: One Love” is expected to retain its spot at No. 1 after scoring an impressive $28.6 million over last weekend and $52 million through the Presidents holiday frame. “Bob Marley” should earn between $12 million to $14 million in its sophomore outing.
“To the Hashira Training” is projected to earn roughly $10 million, which would be on par with its predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village,” which earned $10.1 million in first weekend.

A new “Demon Slayer” film is about to hit the multiplex, and while “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training” contains plenty of familiar material for those who have already watched the show, it’s a little bit of a slog even if you’re already a fan.
When “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Mugen Train” dethroned “Spirited Away” as the highest-grossing Japanese film in history after it debuted in theaters and slowly rolled out to the rest of the world in early 2021, it was the first time the “Demon Slayer” anime was on the radar of most non-fans. Heavy on lore and light on any explanation as to what was actually going on—Who are these people? Why are they on a train? Are demons just ugly vampires with superpowers?—“Mugen Train” was a rough ride for anyone not already deep into “Demon Slayer”’s whole thing.

Despite three new releases, Paramount’s Bob Marley biographical drama “One Love” is projected to top the box office again.
This weekend’s newcomers, Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” and director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” are targeting single digits in their debuts. With those paltry ticket sales, “Bob Marley: One Love” looks to repeat No. 1 after scoring a better-than-expected $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million through the extended holiday frame. The musical film could add $12 million to $14 million in its sophomore outing.
Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer” sequel “Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” also opens this weekend and is aiming for about $10 million to start. That’s on par with its immediate predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village” ($10.1 million in its initial weekend) but far behind 2021’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” (an impressive $21 million amid pandemic-era theater closures...

It’s the last full weekend of the shorter month of February, and it’s hard to think that anything will do well enough to have any sort of impact on a month that barely recovered from January with a better-than-expected Presidents Day weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What we get this weekend as far as new wide releases is an anime project, a faith-based drama and a quirky indie of sorts from an Oscar-winning filmmaker, which should all enter the Top 10 interspersed with returning movies.
Crunchyroll is releasing “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” into 1,962 theaters. It’s a similar theatrical release as what’s been done with “The Chosen,” in that it’s actually made up of two episodes from the popular Crunchyroll anime series, the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village Arc” and the first episode of the “Hashira Training Arc,...

Those who were disappointed by the January box office will just have to hope things improve in February, the month that has just one government holiday and also a Hallmark holiday, both happening in the same week. Those holidays often lead to some of the month’s bigger releases, so things can still take an uptick. Read on for Gold Derby’s February 2024 box office preview.

Hit Japanese animation “Suzume” improved its box office performance in its third week of release in South Korea and remained far ahead of all competing titles.
“Suzume” earned $6.06 million over the weekend between Friday and Sunday, a 7% increase on its previous weekend, itself a strong hold that almost equalled its opening session. Data is sourced from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
The film, which has been a huge hit in Japan and some other Asian territories, enjoyed a 66% share of the entire Korean cinema box office over the most recent weekend and expanded its cumulative haul to $23.9 million after 19 days on release.
That makes it the third highest grossing film of the year to date in Korea and the second highest actually released in 2023. Only December 2022 release “Avatar: The Way of Water,” on $36.3 million, and Japanese animation “The First Slam Dunk” with $34.5 million, have earned more.

The box office saw another strong weekend, though this also being Oscar weekend and this being written on Sunday morning, we’re probably going to see a few minor adjustments on Monday when actual box office is reported.
Regardless, Paramount’s sequel, “Scream VI,” became the second franchise sequel in a row to exceed the opening of all previous installments. It came into the weekend with solid reviews of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it brought in more than $5.7 million just in Thursday previews. It won Friday with ease with an estimated $19.3 million, and that added up to an estimated $44.5 million for its opening weekend. That is indeed the best opening for the franchise, the previous record being 2000’s “Scream 3,” which opened with $34.7 million.

Anime scored again at the box office last weekend, and that’s not just counting the anime-influenced “Creed III.” Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — To the Swordsmith Village” earned $10.1 million in its domestic debut. Its initial success is another example of how anime has become a reliable and bankable genre in times of theatrical feast and multiplex famine.
In pre-covid times, such specialty films commanding relatively modest box office would be curiosities alongside tentpoles and conventional studio programmers, with a mere appearance in the weekend top 10 becoming noteworthy in and of itself. But now, out-of-the-ordinary big-screen experiences are finding favor with audiences, with exhibitors gratefully turning to anything with a loyal fan base they can count on to show up at theaters.

“A Man Called Otto” (Sony/$14.99) was a flop as an adult-appeal awards contender, but it came out on top of VOD charts the week before the Oscars. Challenging its dominance is a strong performance by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” (Crunchyroll/$9.99), which took #1 at Google Play while “Otto” led at Vudu and iTunes.
Netflix has an eye-popping nine theatrical releases on its top 10, including six studio sequels. Among those are four separate “Hunger Games” franchise entries, despite those films spending years in constant basic-cable rotation.
Neither “Otto” nor “Dragon” spent much time at a premium price. Sony quickly dropped the price of “Otto” from its initial $19.99. “Dragon,” from the Sony-owned Japanese anime label Crunchyroll, was introduced as a $9.99 purchase. It opened in U.S. theaters last August, the same week that “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village” opened to over $10 million.

It's the start of a new week, which means another anime film making big bucks at the box office. At this point, it shouldn't come as a big surprise that the release of an anime film, especially one based on a hugely popular TV show -- let alone one as popular as "Demon Slayer" -- would make bank, but here we are.
"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- To the Swordsmith Village" took the fourth spot at the domestic box office in its opening weekend with an estimated $10.12 million gross (via Box Office Mojo). This is just under "Cocaine Bear" and its $11 million haul in its second weekend. Indeed, the first weekend of March was a pretty great time for anime fans in general. It was, to say the very least, one heck of a weekend at the box office. Michael B. Jordan not only stepped back in the ring as Adonis Creed for "Creed III," but he also directed the film, and did so without the presence of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa. In the end, it didn't matter, as the third entry in the "Rocky" spin-off series set a franchise record, taking in $58.6 million in its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo. That absolutely obliterated tracking ahead of the release — and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the good news for this movie.
The previous record for a movie in this franchise belongs to "Creed II," which took in $35.5 million back in 2018, on its way to $213.5 million worldwide. Meanwhile, the original "Creed" opened to $29.6 million with a $173.5 million finish back in 2015. The series continues to trend upward despite years between installments.

Weekend honors at the South Korean box office went to the Japanese animation film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Swordsmith Village,” the latest installment in the “Demon Slayer” film and TV franchise.
It earned $2.31 million between Friday and Sunday, for nearly a quarter of the total weekend cinema business, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
Local charts show another new release, Korean-made crime drama “The Devil’s Deal,” leading the field. That’s because it sold a greater number of tickets 257,000 compared with 235,000 for the Japanese title and Korean charts favor unit sales over gross revenues. With a lower per ticket price, “The Devil’s Door” had a weekend gross score that was a notch lower at $2.00 million.
Further muddying the analysis, the two films released on different days. “The Devil’s Deal” released on Wednesday and scored a total of $3.81 million over five days.

March is already looking better at the box office than the last couple of months, at least in terms of new movies, as two new franchise sequels managed to open in the top five.

The biggest release of the weekend was “Creed III,” starring Michael B. Those previews added up to $5.5 million before being compiled into Friday numbers for a $22 million opening day. MGM estimates the movie to have made $58.7 million over the weekend, claiming it to be the highest-opening sports movie. It’s actually so close to the opening of Sony’s 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid” that they might want to wait until Sunday actuals come in first.

Franchise fatigue was so last week. “Creed III” (MGM) will end up around 50 percent better than pre-weekend projection with nearly $59 million.

If 2023 is to improve to the minimum goal of $9 billion U.S./Canada gross (still far behind pre-Covid totals), franchise titles must lead the way. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) fell below expectations, but the new “Creed” suggests that theaters can thrive beyond Marvel.
Comparisons to the first two “Creed” entries are tricky: Both opened on pre-opening Thanksgiving Wednesdays, making weekend analysis suspect even before noting that ticket prices are now considerably higher. But any threequel that posts this strong a number is impressive.

“Creed III” emerged victorious at the box office with its impressive $58.7 million debut, setting a franchise record while dethroning two-time champ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
Heading into the weekend, “Creed III” was projected to earn $36 million to $40 million, which already would have been enough to establish a new high-water mark. The first “Creed,” which re-launched the decades-old “Rocky” films in 2015, powered to $29.6 million, while its 2018 sequel “Creed II” opened to $35.5 million.
But the third installment, directed by series star Michael B. Jordan in his feature filmmaking debut, got a boost from stellar reviews and strong audience scores, as well as pricer Imax tickets. The newest “Creed” enjoyed a particularly huge turnout on Friday with $22 million.
The $75 million-budgeted “Creed III” is the most expensive film in the trilogy, but it already appears to be well positioned in its theatrical run.

MGM’s “Creed III” has come out of the corner swinging, as Saturday box office estimates have the boxing film earning $22 million on opening day and an estimated $50 million opening weekend from 4,007 theaters, beating box office projections for a $37-40 million launch.
With this threequel, MGM is placing a bet on star Michael B. Jordan, who is making his directorial debut while lacing up the gloves once again as Adonis Creed. Despite being the first film in the series without Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, “Creed III” is on its way to the best opening weekend in the series, topping the $35.5 million 3-day opening of “Creed II” during Thanksgiving weekend 2018.
Reviews are also strong across the board for this film, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 87% critics and 96% audience to go with an A- on CinemaScore. That’s a good sign for “Creed III” as it puts itself in position to...

It’s the battle of the threequels at the weekend box office. Michael B. Jordan’s sports drama “Creed III” is taking on two-time champ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” at the movies, though the heavyweight boxer is expected to emerge victorious over Marvel’s tiniest Avenger.
“Creed III,” which Jordan directed in his feature filmmaking debut, is projected to earn a trilogy-best $36 million to $40 million from 4,007 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Those ticket sales will easily be enough to defeat Disney’s superhero tentpole “Ant-Man 3,” which looks to add $16 million to $19 million in its third weekend of release. So far, the comic book adventure has grossed $170 million domestically and $366 million globally.
Come Sunday, though, the third “Creed” installment needs to leave the ring within those tracking expectations to notch the best start in the spinoff franchise. The original “Creed,” which re-launched the decades-old “Rocky” film series in 2015, debuted to $29.6 million,...

In theory, March is going to be one of the best months outside the coming summer with four back-to-back franchise sequels, starting off with this week’s “Creed III.” The MGM spin-off sequel to Sylvester Stallone‘s long-running “Rocky” franchise introduced Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed (son of Apollo Creed) back in 2015 for the Ryan Coogler-directed “Creed.” Eight years later, Jordan is trying his hand at directing by making “Creed III” his directorial debut.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros.) – March 17
The second superhero sequel of 2023 puts Zachary Levi back into the cape of … well, he doesn’t exactly have a name quite yet, but he does have a family of fellow orphans with superpowers. This time around, they must face the daughters of Atlas, as played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), who are causing havoc for the Shazam family’s Philadelphia hometown. The earlier movie opened with $53.5 million in April 2019, and there’s little reason why “Fury of...
