It’s been less than 12 years since Dan Stevens raised a middle finger to the British aristocracy, quitting “Downton Abbey” as the show neared its Emmy-amassing zenith and setting sail for America with his family. As he admits, he had “absolutely no idea” what was going to happen to him.
“There was no roadmap,” the 41-year-old actor explains with frank honestly about a decision that, at the time, was considered by many to be sheer lunacy. “I left ‘Downton’ with a blank slate. It was just, ‘I think I want to do other things.’ But I didn’t know what that looked like.”
To have an idea of what that currently looks like, anyone need just head to their nearest cinema, where Stevens is going head-to-head against himself in two of the biggest studio releases of the season. In what has become something of a calling card for the Brit...

If "Rocky" is for Boomers and Gen-Xers and "Creed" is for Millennials, then what is the boxing film of choice for Generation Z? One could argue it's "Real Steel." Yes, really.
Released in 2011, the Hugh Jackman-led sci-fi film is loosely based on "Steel," a short story written by Richard Matheson in the 1950s and one that was previously adapted into an episode of "The Twilight Zone" in 1963. Yet, the film itself was very much meant for families -- including then kiddie-aged Gen-Zers -- when it opened in theaters. It would proceed to top the charts on Netflix almost a decade later when the world was on lockdown in 2020, at which point it became apparent just how much of a lasting imprint Jackman's surprisingly heartfelt boxing robots flick had left on the public's consciousness.
Directed by Shawn Levy, "Real Steel" takes place in an alternate future where, instead of people...

That summer of 2022, the walled coastal French town of Saint-Malo got a taste of Hollywood, with “Stranger Things” director-executive producer Shawn Levy running up and down the windy beach, fiercely determined to shoot crucial scenes of his World War II-set Netflix series “All the Light We Cannot See.”
It wasn’t over-the-top action that Levy was hyped about, but rather an intimate father-daughter moment portrayed by Mark Ruffalo and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti, who plays Marie-Laure, a courageous blind teenager living in Nazi-occupied France.
Loberti, who is a Ph.D. student in rhetoric at Penn State, was discovered through a worldwide casting call for actors who are blind or visually impaired. In “All the Light We Cannot See,” Marie (as she’s called in the series) crosses paths with Werner (Louis Hofmann), a conflicted young German soldier hired for his radio tech skills, who is willing to challenge orders. This week’s highly anticipated Rick and Morty season 7 premiere, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back,” saw the return of fan-favorite characters Mr. Poopybutthole, Birdperson, Gearhead, and Squanchy, as they try to stage an intervention and inadvertently get riggity-riggity-wrecked with Hugh Jackman. Not a person impersonating Hugh Jackman like they did Ice T in the early seasons, but The Hugh Jackman as a fictionalized version of himself, depicted as a frat boy party animal. In every circumstance, this would be a hysterical cameo if not for the fact that the Wolverine actor has been getting his claws into adult animation for the past several years. Jackman has wholly gotten into his silly voice-acting bag, and I’m here for it.
Dating all the way back to 2006, amidst playing Wolverine in countless X-Men films and hosting the Tonys, Jackman began exploring roles that explored his vocal range, literally. So he starred...

At 5’2, Mickey Rooney may have been small in stature, but he had a huge personality and was one of the biggest stars in the heyday of the Golden Era of Hollywood. He had one of the longest careers of any entertainer, with a body of work that spans nine decades in the industry, including vaudeville, films, television, radio and the stage.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Rami Malek will star in the 20th Century Studios thriller “Amateur.” The picture, sources affirm, is in development.
Set to be directed by James Hawes, “Amateur” concerns a CIA cryptographer who loses his wife in a London terrorist attack. After his bosses refuse to take direct action, he blackmails his own agency into training him to allow himself to do the job himself.
Malek, who got his start in a small role in “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” burst onto the scene in USA Network’s buzzy conspiracy thriller “Mr. Robot.” He also played Freddie Mercury in Bryan Singer’s controversial but incredibly successful musical biopic, winning the Best Actor Oscar for the 905 million-grossing blockbuster. He has since starred in films like “Amsterdam” and “The Little Things” along with playing the prime bad guy in the most recent 007 movie, “No Time to Die.”

Disney is no longer at risk of surrendering profits on two of its blockbusters — Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool — for using allegedly stolen VFX technology to animate CG characters. Conceding that he erred in a previous ruling clearing the way for trial over these films and exposing the company to massive damages, a federal judge on Wednesday found that earnings from the movies cannot be tied back to use of the technology.
Disney still faces the prospect of losing proceeds from Beauty and the Beast, which has grossed 1.26 billion.
The long-running case has a complicated history, featuring a personal feud between two Silicon Valley figures that threatened to delay multiple movies at Disney. At the core of the dispute, software company Rearden asserted ownership of lauded VFX technology called Mova Contour that had improperly been licensed by an outfit founded by a former employee.

This warm documentary about Robin Williams reveals how much he was loved by those who knew him
When Robin Williams died in 2014 at the age of 63, the tabloids filled in the blanks. The front pages speculated on the return of his well-documented demons: Williams had a history of depression, alcohol addiction and cocaine use. Then came the postmortem, revealing that actually he’d been suffering from an undiagnosed degenerative brain disease, Lewy body dementia. Which explained his symptoms in last 18 or so months of life: Parkinson’s-like tremors, visual hallucinations, paranoid delusions and sleep disturbance. As a neurologist puts it, he must have been terrified.
In this sensitive, desperately sad documentary, Williams’s widow, Susan Schneider, along with friends and colleagues, describes his decline. For a while, things just hadn’t seemed right. There’s footage from the set of his final movie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb...

Just why do consumers pay to see movies? The question is more than academic. On Wednesday night in a legally adventurous lawsuit over the way that Disney and 20th Century Fox used “stolen” technology for CG characters in blockbuster movies including Avengers, Beauty and the Beast, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Disney suggested the reason wasn’t because of any software tool.

Rooney was born Joe Yule, Jr. on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, so his fans around the world are celebrating his 100th birthday! At 17 months old, he made his stage debut in his parent’s vaudeville act, and made his motion picture debut in 1926. In 1927, he starred in the first of several short films in the “Mickey Maguire” series, and adopted the stage name “Mickey Rooney.” He made 78 of these comedies, and also received great notices in films such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1935). When his brain was firing on all comedic cylinders—on stage performing standup or improvising in front of the camera—Robin Williams described an experience akin to being possessed. “When it works, it’s great—and when it doesn’t, it’s painful,” he said, solemnly reflecting on his ireplicable comedic genius. Those observations, taken from an old television interview, make up the prologue to Robin’s Wish, a lean, intimate and slightly incomplete documentary about Williams’ final years and months. They foreshadow the devastating cranial spiral at the heart of the comedian’s tragic ending.
Undoubtedly, Williams’ death by suicide on Aug. 11, 2014, came as a global surprise. Rampant media reports erroneously suggested substance abuse or depression as leading causes, all-encompassing issues perhaps attributed to his recently diagnosed case of Parkinson’s disease. But once examiners conducted a full autopsy, they found Williams had suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder called Lewy body dementia,...

Levy will direct while Reynolds will star, and both will produce along with Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.
A fourth-quarter start to production on the east coast is being eyed — of course, it all depends on the coronavirus.

Which actors are the most "Presidential"? To find out, we assembled this exclusive list of actors who have portrayed the President of the United States more than once.
Getting the opportunity to portray a Us President in film is rare. It can be a dignified role, and many times the actor has to be able to exhibit certain qualities we would traditionally associate with the Us head of state. Us Presidents are also depicted in film in a variety of ways. Some of them are the main characters for their respective films, where others are simply bit parts designed to represent the figurehead. Other roles may be satires, caricatures, or played for comedic effect. Regardless of the purpose or the depth of the role, there have been a limited number of Us President roles in the last century+ of motion picture projection.
Of course, some actors are more Presidential than others.

Actor Robin Williams was struggling with a brain disorder that was not immediately diagnosed, causing many of the bizarre symptoms that sapped him of his vitality and ultimately led him to take his own life.
That’s according to a new biography, Robin (Henry Holt & Co.) by Dave Itzkoff that’s out this month and details the final stages of Williams’s life.
Williams was initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but his behaviors in his last year were uncharacteristic of that malady, leading some to blame drugs or alcohol for his problem. Finally, a neuropathologist saw him and correctly diagnosed his affliction: diffuse Lewy body dementia. It is the second-most-common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer’s disease, as protein deposits in the brain affect thinking, memory, emotions and body movements.

Earlier this year, FX and Marvel worked together to bring the incredibly unique series Legion to FX. The series followed David Haller, who may very well be the most powerful mutant known to man. The show isn’t your typical superhero show, and if you were looking for something less abstract and artsy, you may have been disappointed. However, if you are one of those people, then this new mutant-centric series from Fox, The Gifted, may be more up your alley.

The sci-fi comedy, Absolutely Anything, features Williams as the voice of a talking dog named Dennis. The film, which premiered in the United Kingdom in August 2015, is coming to American theaters on May 12.

Now that we objectified male actors for a change, let’s dive deep into Baywatch, a Seth Gordon film that’s set to be released on May 28 of this year. Judging just from Gordon’s previous work on Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, it looks funny, and it looks good.
Move over David Hasselhoff! Dwayne Johnson takes over his role as Mitch Buchanan, the super hunky main lifeguard who now has to deal with a new recruit, Matt Brody, and his sporadic ways. Originally played by David Charvet in the television series, this new lifeguard is, surprise, played by Zac Efron. Together, the two must learn to overcome their differences after they find some underground crime ring that could potentially destroy the Bay.

There was one movie that many people knew that Wolverine had an unofficial cameo in and that’s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Since the filmed earned $363.2 million at the global box office in 2014, a good number of people were already well aware of it. However a lesser known film that only grossed $9.1 million also contained Jackman playing the Wolverine. Actually he plays himself talking about him playing the Wolverine, which is why you hear his Australian accent. During a scene in which Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann), an awkward and self-loathing high school senior, offers

The Untitled X-Men series set up at Fox is rounding out its cast. The Matt Nix-created series cast Stephen Moyer earlier this week, and now THR reports that Amy Acker, Emma Dumont, and Percy Hynes White have signed on to the show.
Of course, fans of Joss Whedon will be familiar with Acker, who had significant roles in Angel and Dollhouse and brought down the house as Beatrice in his Much Ado About Nothing. She also spent several seasons on Person of Interest. Acker will play Kate Stewart, “a woman who is struggling with her separation from her husband, Reed (the aforementioned Moyer), and her increasingly challenging teenage children. When her family situation takes a dark turn, she finds that she's stronger than she thinks.”
I’m sure you all remember Dumont as a ballerina/roller derby girl on Bunheads, because GeekTyrant readers were definitely among the ten people who watched that show.

Sesame Street: David Guion and Michael Handelman will write a screenplay for a big-screen version of TV's venerable educational series Sesame Street. [Deadline] Hindenburg: A new movie version of the real-life Hindenburg disaster is on its way. Through the past 47 years on television, Sesame Street has been one of our most enduring cultural touchstones, as generations of children have learned letters, numbers, sharing, and cooperation at the feet of Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Elmo. So a leap to the big screen is such a natural idea, it’s surprising it’s only happened twice, with 1985’s Follow That Bird, and 1999’s The Adventures Of Elmo In Grouchland.
But keeping to Sesame Workshop’s roughly-every-15-years schedule, a return to the big screen is in the works. Deadline reports that Warner Bros., whose sister company HBO now airs Sesame Street before passing episodes to PBS for a second run, has hired David Guion and Michael Handelman, the screenwriting duo behind Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb, Dinner For Schmucks, and the Zach Braff vehicle The Ex.

Warner Bros. has started developing a new Sesame Street movie with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy, and they've hired David Guion and Michael Handelman to write the script. The two writers have previously worked on films such as the adventure comedy Night at The Museum: Secret of the Tomb and the Steve Carrell comedy Dinner for Schmucks.
According to Deadline, the writers will "start with a treatment as the studio finds a handle for a narrative family film based on the 47-year-old show that has been redone by WB’s sister company, HBO."
So, they aren't sure what exactly this Sesame Street movie will be yet, but I'm sure they'll figure out something good that respects what the series is. I'm curious to see what they end up coming up with. Sesame Street is one of the most beloved children shows ever, and the characters in it are iconic. This...
