The series about the lives of high school students ran for exactly ten years – from 1990 to 2000. The most successful seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210 were watched by 14.5 million viewers in the US alone, and by the same number of fans around the world.
During this time, the main characters evolved from shallow high school students to complex personalities, dealing not only with common teenage problems, but also with more serious issues such as alcoholism and domestic violence.
Despite the fact that the main characters became world famous, Beverly Hills, 90210 was the first and last major project for most of the cast.

South Australian Anthony Frith’s close encounter with “Sharknado” prodco The Asylum in “Mockbuster” is among five handpicked titles to be showcased at the Adelaide Film Festival Goes to Cannes showcase, held at Cannes Marché du Film on May 17.
The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

There are sharks all up in the Seine in Netflix’s upcoming aquatic horror, Under Paris. Here’s the first trailer.
At some point, sharks will club together and get a PR manager; until then, we’ll keep getting films like Jaws, Sharknado, and upcoming efforts like Beast Of War, Something In The Water and Renny Harlin’s Deep Water.
To the ever-growing list we can now add Under Paris, coming to a small screen near you this summer courtesy of Netflix. If you haven’t gathered already: yes, the film really is about sharks swimming up the Seine to terrorise all the hundreds of people that (presumably) swim in Paris’ waters on any given day.
Yes, it’s all incredibly silly, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, everyone involved knows it’s all incredibly silly. Under Paris is directed by Xavier Gens, who broke through with the extremely gory 2007 indie horror,...

The Alien Report: "The Alien Report follows "The Abductee" (Braxton Hale), an everyday American who finds himself hijacked by extraterrestrial beings and taken on a terrifying journey of self-preservation, running afoul of classic "grey aliens", disturbing human-et hybrids, and the U.S. government's shady Men in Black. Based on countless documented reports made by self-proclaimed abductees, The Alien Report is a meticulous, straight-faced look at what an real-life alien abduction would be like, from the perspective of first-person cameras.
The Alien Report has screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Brazil. Shot on iPhone and GoPro cameras as a non-traditional narrative composed of re-assembled found footage, the picture plays out as both a sci-fi thriller and first-person documentary. It is the intended first chapter in a trilogy of films about extraterrestrial abductions.
The Alien Report was directed by Patrick Donnelly and produced by Kevin Schroeder and Michael Sell.

Screambox goes to war with Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies on April 12. Indie horror staple Bill Oberst Jr. (3 From Hell) stars as the President who emancipated the slaves, saved the Union, and slaughtered the undead.
Rise of the Zombies also takes a bite out of Screambox on April 12. Its all-star cast includes Mariel Hemingway (Manhattan), Ethan Suplee (Mallrats), LeVar Burton (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”), Danny Trejo (From Dusk Till Dawn), and French Stewart...

The horror TV series Z Nation was produced by The Asylum (a company best known for the Sharknado franchise and mockbusters) and aired on Syfy for five seasons, running for a total of 68 episodes from September 12, 2014 to December 28, 2018. After that show wrapped up, a prequel series called Black Summer ran for two seasons (released in 2019 and 2021) on the Netflix streaming service. If you’ve been wondering when Black Summer is going to return for a third season… well, it looks like it’s not going to, because the folks at What’s on Netflix have confirmed that Netflix quietly “ghost cancelled” the show. But a new post on The Asylum’s X account indicates that Z Nation might be getting a revival! The post promises that a big announcement is coming soon…

It’s, once again, not safe to go in the water as we quickly find out in the first trailer for Something In The Water.
We’ve barely recovered from the whiplash of watching Jason Statham battle a ginormous shark in The Meg 2, but here we go again!
No, it’s not another The Meg movie. This time, five ordinary women are pitted against a very hungry shark while stranded in the Caribbean.
Take a look at the trailer for Something In The Water.
Hold on, let me just cancel my upcoming holiday to the Caribbean. Now then, that looks rather good!

This post contains spoilers for the "Sharknado" franchise.
Why is the "Sharknado" franchise still culturally relevant? Well, for starters, the appeal of the stupidly entertaining combination of the words "shark" and "tornado" has come together to create a string of unforgettable movies with progressively ridiculous narratives. Moreover, all the "Sharknado" films are defined by a conscious "so bad that it's good" factor, with a deliberate bend towards schlocky exaggeration meant to be humorous and baffling.
The premise of the first "Sharknado" film is extremely simple: a tornado ravages Los Angeles, which floods the city, causing man-eating sharks to make their way into land. A group of survivors try their utmost to outlive this catastrophe, as they need to figure out a way to evade the sharks while steering clear of the aftereffects of the tornado. Even with this rather fat-fetched premise, this could have been a serious survival drama — thankfully,...

It wasn’t a happy New Year’s Eve for Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Ian Ziering as he was caught up in a brawl with a group of bikers in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 31. Ziering takes a swing at one of the riders, who had pulled up directly in front of his car. While it’s not yet known what led to the incident, a TMZ source claims that Ziering’s vehicle may have been hit before the situation turned violent. In the clip, the Sharknado star drags one of the bikers to the ground before more helmeted assailants start throwing punches at Ziering, with one of them connecting with the side of his head. Sharknado actress Tara Reid recently discussed weight loss rumors following her departure from season 2 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
Reid opened up about the “demons she continues to fight inside her,” including internet bullies and body image.
During the interview with the Los Angeles Inquisitor, she denied having anorexia and bulimia, saying, “I’m terrified of throwing up, so that’s not gonna happen. And I love food too much.”
She called out those who spread rumors about her, calling them “miserable” for spreading these “hurtful” lies about her.
“Leave me alone,” the actress said. “Pick on me again on something else, but not on those two things. It’s not right.”
She compared her experience as a thin person to that of heavier people, pointing out the double standards.

Sharknado, Slither, Eight Legged Freaks, Piranha… movie history is saturated with ridiculous creature-features featuring extra-large monsters wreaking havoc, with most modern iterations plagued by bad CGI… Well now comes Bad CGI Gator from writer Zalman Band, director Danny Draven and Full Moon Features – who are taking this pop culture phenomenon and well… poking fun at it!

Like Jaws before it, the release of Cocaine Bear earlier this year has resulted in a slew of natural horror films, many of which are using the same conceit of an animal driven to extreme behavior by the consumption of narcotics. Projects already in production include Crackcoon and the delayed Methgator, created by The Asylum. You can probably guess their plots.
One animal-on-drugs movie that has already seen release is Cocaine Shark. Whereas that film treated its subject matter with an unabashedly schlocky approach, though, the more recent Deep Fear takes a similar gimmick and plays it with a straighter face. It could be the perfect post-summer movie for anyone who wants a fun cinematic trend taken a little more seriously.
Set on a yacht sailing around Grenada, Deep Fear centers on a woman named Naomi (Mãdãlina Ghenea) who, during a sailing trip to see her boyfriend (Ed Westwick), gets...

Now, Bad CGI Gator writer, Zalman Band, director, Danny Draven, and Full Moon Features are taking this pop culture phenomenon and well… poking fun!”
In Bad CGI Gator, “Six college grads on Spring Break get a cabin in the swamplands of Georgia. They decide to throw their school laptops in a backyard lake in an act of youthful defiance, which unknowingly turns a lurking alligator into the dreaded and insatiable… Bad CGI Gator!”

Film industry cynics may take one look at a newly announced low-budget comedy called Barbenheimer and a poster that uses Barbie’s iconic pink font over a picture of a nuclear explosion and features the tagline “D-Cup, A-Bomb,” and immediately assume it’s simply a shameless attempt to cash in on a very recent cultural phenomenon. And those cynics would be absolutely correct, says Charles Band, the prolific B-movie icon who has been making low-budget horror comedies since the early 1970s.
“It’s 100 percent true,” he says. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the bizarre coupling of these two movies and the combination of Barbie’s vibe and the darkness of Oppenheimer. You mix that together and you have such an opportunity for dark humor.”
Barbenheimer, selling at the American Film Market (where else?) with Amp, follows Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer, a brilliant scientist doll living in Dolltopia,...

Before Sharknado took the world of pop culture by storm, producer Roger Corman unleashed Sharktopus in 2010, a Syfy original movie featuring a monster that was half shark and half octopus. The film ended up spawning two spinoff movies – Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda in 2014 and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf in 2015 – and now a remake is on the way?!
Yes, Sharktopus is getting a Chinese remake here in 2023, thirteen years after Syfy unleashed their hybrid monster. And the official trailer has arrived this week. Check it out below.
Directed by Xu Shi-Xing and Hu Dong-Sheng, this particular take on Sharktopus looks to be heavily inspired by The Meg, which itself feels like a big budget Corman production.
No word yet on the remake’s international release strategy. Stay tuned for more.
Michelle Ye, Luo Li-Qun, Chen Wen-Jun and Lemon Li star in Sharktopus (2023).

Sharknado has been back in the news this year, since 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the goofball shark movie’s initial release – so it’s fitting that Sharknado director Anthony C. Ferrante also has multiple new movies making their way out into the world this year. The latest Ferrante joint is the horror film Dante’s Hotel, which is set to be released through the Tubi streaming service this Friday, October 13th. With its premiere just three days off, a trailer for Dante’s Hotel has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Scripted by Ferrante and William C. Martell, Dante’s Hotel has the following synopsis: When an unknown assailant preys on the patrons of a haunted hotel, an event planner teams up with a mysterious tenant whose dark past is the key to freeing the cursed hotel.

As big of a threat as artificial intelligence is to TV and film, there’s one place where nearly everyone can agree it may be beneficial: sorting through a streamer’s seemingly endless library. That’s exactly the strategy Tubi has launched with Rabbit AI, the ad-supported streamer’s collaboration with ChatGPT.
It also marks the first time a streamer has officially partnered with AI to enhance its search.
Currently, Tubi uses traditional search and discovery tools to catalog its content. Users basically enter in a keyword and, as long as a title is indexed correctly, a corresponding title appears from that search. The streamer also uses machine learning to create containers of genres and subgenres that may be of interest to users.
“Over the past 20 years or so, people have been conditioned to using an unnatural and unhuman way of searching for content with keywords. It’s like fragments...

Tubi, Fox Corp.’s ad-supported video-streaming service, has turned to OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial-intelligence agent to suggest new TV shows and movies to watch — although the feature is really just a form of natural-language search.
Tubi’s Rabbit AI is powered by ChatGPT-4. The AI feature, which shows up on the bottom of Tubi’s mobile app, lets users “ask questions the same way you’d ask a friend.” For example, if you type, “Any movies that are funny about sharks?” into Rabbit AI, it will return a list of titles including “Shark Bait,” “Sharknado,” “Sharkula” and “Bigfoot vs Megalodon.” (See demo video below.) Users can then save the results onto their My List watchlist. In addition, search history is saved for future reference.

Anthony C. Ferrante, who used to write for Fangoria magazine back in the day, has directed twenty feature films over the course of his directing career – and several of those are shark thrillers. Ferrante was the director behind the over-the-top shark action of Sharknado, and when that movie turned out to be a pop culture sensation he returned to direct all five of the increasingly over-the-top sequels. The franchise wrapped up in 2018… and now, five years later, Ferrante has directed his seventh shark movie. A production of The Asylum, it’s a thriller called Blind Waters – and it’s already available to watch on the Tubi streaming service! To help you decide whether or not this movie is something you’d want to watch on Tubi, we have the trailer embedded above.

Whether you’ve heard the term or not, chances are you’ve seen an exploitation film somewhere in the wild. From sharksploitation megahits like Sharknado, to culture-defining classics like ozploitation’s original Mad Max, or carsploitation’s Death Race 2000, the quality of these carefully marketed mockbusters – built entirely around audience trends with huge, eye-catchingly stupid titles – has always been up for debate. But it’s rare there’s a moral dimension too; after all, no one owns the copyright on cars or sharks or post-apocalyptic bikers. It’s a little different when the genre being exploited though, is an actual person.
Bruce Lee is arguably the most famous and accomplished martial arts performer that’s ever lived. Despite a tragically truncated filmography, cut short at just four features, by his sudden death in 1973, he had co-birthed the entire kung-fu genre, which continues to live and thrive half a century on.

What began as another Syfy creature feature has now become an important piece of pop culture, taking over the world with multiple sequels that came in its wake.
In Sharknado: Feeding Frenzy, filmmaker Jeremy Wagener revisits the 2013 cult so-bad-it’s-good horror movie Sharknado, directed by Anthony C. Ferrante for the Syfy Channel.

It started with a curious text message from a friend, which stood out among the usual messages of congratulations coming through to my phone for the premiere of the third season of my Netflix show Indian Matchmaking: “To the devil w the Nyt! You keep making, we’ll keep watching. Trust that your viewer isn’t dumb. You just keep slaying, Smriti!”
Devil to The New York Times? I ripped open my Sunday paper and there it was, smack in the middle of The New York Times Magazine. The headline blared: “It’s Time To Break Up With Indian Matchmaking.” Oof.
The article itself went on to repeat many of the same missives I’ve heard about the show since its debut in peak-pandemic 2020 — that it doesn’t do enough to interrogate the colorism and casteism within the Indian community, that the creators (me) let a 60-something woman spew patriarchal one-liners unchecked,...

A decade after it became an unexpected smash on the SyFy Channel, spawning a low-budget B-movie franchise in the process, Sharknado — in which Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and John Heard battle a tornado that sucks up great whites and hammerheads and spits them out over Los Angeles — is about to hit cinemas for the very first time as part of a two-day 10th anniversary celebration.
And to help promote the return of its most famous creation, producers at The Asylum have, not unlike in their infamous slate of so-called mockbuster titles, turned to the current movie-of-the-moment for some inspiration. In an alternative special poster revealed exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Sharknado is given a Barbie twist, with Barbie seen driving her pink convertible into a pink hurricane flinging killer sharks (some pink) from the sky, and Ken wielding a chainsaw. It’s unlikely this came with any approval from Mattel.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

Director Ben Wheatley serves up a busy but flavourless bouillabaisse of ideas nicked from Jaws, Jurassic Park, Alien and Sharknado, and leaves it to Statham to occasionally raise a droll smile
“A relationship, I think, is like a shark,” says Woody Allen in Annie Hall. “It has to constantly move forward or it dies.” Ditto franchises. A prologue set in the Cretaceous period hints that Meg 2: The Trench will exceed the enjoyably tacky thrills of the 2018 seaborne monster movie by going weirder and wilder – a suspicion encouraged by the presence of Ben Wheatley as director. In fact, the sequel alternately treads water and splashes around frantically in search of an identity. Never settling on whether he wants his film to be Alien, Jaws, Jurassic Park or Sharknado, Wheatley serves up a bouillabaisse of all four.

The unknown depths of the sea have always fascinated humanity and appealed to us, both through their beauty and terror. Evoking this fear of the unknown, Steven Spielberg revolutionized the creature horror genre forever through his first blockbuster hit, Jaws (1975). Since then, a plethora of imitative works have been released, along with three mediocre sequels, never quite able to emulate the dread ever again. However, the astronomical success of Jaws resulted in studios indulging in a really weird obsession with shark-related action movies ever since, which culminated in abominations like Sharknado and Sharktopus, which might be some of the worst crimes done to the species aside from human exploitation.
Although not that deplorable in essence, keeping in tradition with mega-budget shark action movies, Meg was released in 2018 and pitted the monstrous prehistoric shark Megalodon against Jason Statham and co. With its sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, on its way to be released this week,...

When Jaws emerged in the summer of 1975, it created the shark horror genre as we know it today, spawning countless rip-offs in its wake. Some good. Some bad. Some just plain ugly.
The new Shudder documentary Sharksploitation is a must watch for lovers of this particular trend, and it dives deeper into the phenomenon to explain why we love these types of films.
Endless movies now exist within this “shark exploitation” category – many being talked about this week in honor of Discovery Channel’s 35th annual Shark Week.
Even if most don’t match the magic of Steven Spielberg’s classic, many great shark films exist within the “sharksploitation” subgenre. And some of them even happen to be sequels.

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws left an indelible mark on cinema upon release in 1975, ushering in the summer blockbuster as we know it. Like its many taglines, Jaws also made people afraid to go into the water thanks to a newfound fear of man-eating sharks. And the film’s massive box office success created a tsunami of copycats, launching the “sharksploitation” subgenre.
