"A" for effort, "B" for results

I respect this writing team.

To spend so much time establishing a formula that viewers are hooked on, and then to (occasionally) toss the formula under the bus and go for something new, takes guts. Bully for them.

Here the writers turn an entire episode into a "stranded at the motel" story. Not original. Been done both on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood movies probably dozens of times. But it is fun and new and interesting.

Jim Caviezel looks lost without his suit! Wow. Shows you the power of repetition.

Only reason I did give it a higher rating is that I saw the plot twist before the half way point. But, to be fair, I have seen a lot of film and TV.

Like a Video Game
tpennington-764483 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I very much enjoyed this episode. It reminds me of a murder mystery video game. You have all of these characters, these suspects on this isolated island during a storm and you have to figure out which one is a murderer. You have three main characters that you could switch back and forth between to control their actions. You can interrogate suspects. You can look for clues. I suppose it'd have to start off the island at first. Come to think of it, POI itself would make a very interesting game. Like L. A. Noire, you could have different cases/levels (not desks) you go through that each are a story. You can even have an overarching narrative in the game. Cases/levels could come from the show itself, this episode included. Other characters not in this particular episode such as Zoe, Fusco, Shaw and Root can make appearances (even as playable characters)

Identities Theft

The Machine has not delivered any number for three days and Finch and Reese go to the movie theater to kill time. They believe something may be wrong with The Machine, but suddenly it provides six numbers. Five of them are missing, but the sixth, Jack Rollins, lives in New York. Reese visits his apartment that is empty, and Finch finds that he rented a house in Owen Island. Despite the stormy day, Reese travels to the island to find Rollins. When he arrives at Rollins' house, he stumbles upon FBI Agent Alan Fahey, who is also looking for Rollins. Reese poses as a US Marshall and team up with Fahey to proceed the investigation together. Finch visits Rollins' apartment again and finds that he had been incinerated in the furnace. Reese and Fahey head to a small police station, where people that has not been evacuated are looking for shelter with Deputy Erica Schmidt. The island has no communication, and Finch flies to Owen Island to update Reese. When the deputy is found dead, stabbed on the chest, Reese and Fahey learn that the killer is inside the station. But who is he? Meanwhile, Carter and Beecher drive to Owen Island to help the investigation.

"Proteus" is another excellent episode of "Person of Interest", where The Machine seems to be not working properly. The identity of the serial-killer is predictable for the viewer that pays attention, and the dirty Beecher saves the lives of Carter, Reese and Finch. The situation between Beecher and Carter is tense since she does not trust him anymore. My vote is nine.

Dark And Moody Procedural Episode Is A Winner
dirtylemons7 March 2013
(No Spoilers)

'Person of Interest' is the best thing on network television, in my opinion, and especially three of the five episodes preceding this one are all clear contenders for best episode of the series so far. All of those episodes really delved into the overall mythology of the series, so I'm always a little wary when they go back to a more-or-less standard procedural episode. But this one is special:

The atmosphere provided by the storm in this episode worked to maximum effect in conjunction with the fairly disturbing plot. The plot itself is very good, I think, and very different from the rest of the procedural episodes, giving me lots of hope for the ways the show could expand on it's original premise without straying too far from it in the future. And although I've pegged this episode one of the 'procedurals', it should be noted that the episode basically goes a long way to show just one of the effects of an incident from a previous episode. I can't stress enough how well the grim setting expresses that sentiment. Also, perhaps it's just me, but this episode and the last ('Relevance') seemed to have even better production values than usual. And that's no small compliment, considering just how great the series' production values are revealed to be on the Blu-ray of the first season. I will say that, even though I award this my highest rating, I was disappointed by the lack of Fusco and somewhat underwhelmed by the revelation of who was behind the 'whodunit' (I thought it was obvious, though maybe that's just me as well). But all in all, I really hope that we can expect every future episode to be this good.

Most incredible single episode ever

This is the Identity movie all over in a single tv episode. Marvelous. You don't want to miss this if you are a mystery thriller lover, even if you're not.

Trust Issues for Carter amid hurricane!
ShelbyTMItchell9 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Really another great show as it shows that the storm was set amid Sandy as Reese and Finch get six numbers as Reese posing as a US Marshal and later with his contacts, Finch posing as a weather exert head out to the eye of the storm.

While Carter who is trying to get over not being accepted in the FBI due to her involvement with Beecher. As he may be a dirty cop with IA busting down his and to a lesser degree, Carter's door.

Meanwhile an FBI agent meets Reese as both and several other people are locked down by the storm. In a small police station. Where one of them is likely to be the killer. Playing a guessing game with one another. But you may guess who is the killer mid-way through but won't give you anymore hints other than that.

Reese and Finch must decide who it is amid the storm before another person gets hurt. While Carter has to fend off Beecher as he may or may not be a dirty cop. As both drive up to where our heroes are at.

Sadly where is Fusco? As really missed him and his sense of humor.

Most predictable "Person Of Interest" episode so far
gridoon20243 March 2021
Not much to say about this one....not only is it laughably predictable, but it also makes Reese look dangerously dumb as he fails to see what is right in front of his eyes and indirectly endangers the lives of several innocent people. Certainly a big comedown after the excellent previous episode (Shaw's introduction). **1/2 out of 4.

Disappointing Writing
rgclosson-568-23200117 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of the things I like best about this series is the relative believability of episodes. OK, not exactly believable but entertaining when I can suspend disbelief. I like the variety of stories and the generally feel-good outcomes. What I never like is when a story's progress depends on a just-in-time rescue. So John Wayne, "Here comes the Cavalry!" It's a smart move to get Finch out of the office, but having to save him (or anyone) with an unbelievable plot twist spoils it for me. The writers have been better than this. I hope we're not seeing a hint of things to come, e.g., ramping up the complexity of plots to stay fresh, but requiring incredible coincidences or twists to make them happen.
