Netflix sure owes a lot to horrific crimes being committed. The streaming service has had massive hits with such true crime documentaries as the truly harrowing "American Murder: The Family Next Door," "The Staircase," and the original Netflix crime doc phenomenon "Making a Murderer." The list of Netflix true crime documentaries is seemingly endless, and it's only growing year after year as our obsession with real-life acts of shocking barbarity shows no signs of abating.
Earlier this year the cinematic true crime series "Missing: Dead or Alive?" found its way into the Netflix Top 10. But that wasn't the first true crime hit for Netflix this year. That honor belongs to "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal." Across three episodes, the series laid out the events surrounding the downfall of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who in 2023 was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Swat made its first appearance on Nielsen’s streaming charts a week after CBS briefly canceled the series.
The crime drama cracked the overall top 10, and came in fourth among acquired series, for the week of May 15-21 with 635 million minutes of watch time. On May 5, CBS said it was canceling Swat — then reversed course three days later and picked up a shortened final season of the show. The series’ first five seasons arrived on Netflix on May 17; it also streams on Paramount+ and Hulu.
Jennifer Lopez’s movie The Mother rose to No. 1 overall, swapping places with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which led the previous week. Both declined some week-to-week, but The Mother’s 19 percent dip (to 1.16 billion minutes of viewing) was much smaller than the 44 percent drop (to 1.06 billion minutes) for Queen Charlotte.
After two weeks of small declines, Ted Lasso rose to 769 million minutes (a 15 percent...

Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte spent a second straight week as the top title in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — with a viewing time rank almost identical to its opening week. The parent series also rejoined the top 10.
Queen Charlotte recorded 1.88 billion minutes of viewing for the week of May 8-14 — nearly equal to the 1.89 billion minutes from the prior frame. (Taking the numbers out one more decimal point, the series had 1.883 billion minutes for May 8-14 and 1.888 billion for May 1-7.) The prequel also led more Netflix users to revisit Bridgerton, which moved into eighth place among original series with 413 million minutes of viewing (up from 125 million a week earlier, per Nielsen).
Three Netflix shows were new to the top 10 originals: Docuseries Missing: Dead or Alive? (634 million minutes of viewing), the return of Queer Eye for its seventh season (387 million) and docudrama Queen Cleopatra (340 million). Still missing from the...

Missing for the third week in a row from Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings is “Citadel,” Amazon Prime Video’s $185 million spy series starring Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden.
The May 8-14 viewing window marked the series’ second full week of availability and its third week with a chance at making the chart, as it premiered on April 28, meaning that viewership during its first three days of availability would have counted towards the April 24-30 charts. During that first window, Nielsen noted that “Citadel” just missed the streaming originals chart (not to be confused with the overall Top 10 chart) bringing in 306 million viewing minutes and losing out on the tenth place position to John Mulaney’s “Baby J.” Nielsen did not provide information regarding the series’ viewership for the May 1-7 or the May 8-14 windows.

From "Making a Murderer," to the trend-setting "Tiger King," to the 2020 revival of "Unsolved Mysteries" (and its sometimes-questionable relationship with mental health), Netflix has become home to many a true crime documentary series. The latest, "Missing: Dead or Alive?," hit the streamer earlier this month, and it's been burning up the Netflix Top 10 recently with an approach that's more cinematic -- though whether that pays off is another question entirely.
According to Netflix's own stats, the series was watched for a total of 15.29 million hours during the week of May 15-May 21,2023. To give a bit more context to that otherwise largely useless metric, there are four episodes in total with a runtime of 3 hours, so if everyone who watched the series saw it through to the end, that means "Missing: Dead Or Alive" has been viewed by at least 5 million people.
The official synopsis for "Missing: Dead or Alive?" explains...

Exclusive: Banijay has taken another leap into the premium docs space with the launch of Dsp Films, an offshoot of long-running UK unscripted indie Dsp. The super-indie has poached Netflix’s Missing: Dead or Alive EP Graeme McAulay to run Dsp Films and he will leave his current role at UK doc indie Blast Films next month.
Dsp Films will develop premium docs for both streamers and UK broadcasters, coming at a time when the big production houses are keen to push into the space. The launch is unveiled just two months after Fremantle opened Undeniable, a similar label helmed by Global Head of Documentaries Mandy Chang.
During his stint as Blast Creative Director, McAulay was behind Netflix’s Missing: Dead or Alive true crime docuseries, which entered the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 last week, along with Channel 4’s BAFTA-nominated Jeremy Kyle Show: Death On Daytime. Prior to joining Blast,...

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.
