Simple, sweet and pure kind of love!
marissareeka30 June 2023
Another Chinese series got me hooked on after watching the first episode. Yes, to be honest, I simply got butterflies in my stomach while watching 'When I Fly Towards You' and that's purely because of the two main leads. Let me tell you all, I was completely in love with them. Though they are both still young, they manage to convince me as an audience with their amazing act here. I honestly believe Zhang Miao Yi (Su Zai Zai) and Zhou Yi Ran (Zhang Lu Rang) will be the next queen and king of great chemistry in the future. Frankly speaking, I have never seen their previous work before, however, after watching this one I strongly recommend you all to watch it as quickly as possible.

Genuinely, I am not really into teen-romance love stories kind of thing. But, 'When I Fly Towards You' hits me differently. The simplicity and purity of the relationship between the two main leads/characters make the series outstanding as well as exceptional. Well, without further ado, I suggest you all to go watch it right away. Thumbs up!! Love it very much!!

Beautiful and uplifting!

When I Fly Towards You manages to capture the fleeting moment in life when possibilities are endless. Back when we say goodbye to childhood and we become young adults going out into the world to expand our understanding as we discover ourselves through others.

On a technical aspect the cdrama is shot digitally but there are snippets filmed with an analog camera, visually making you understand you are being told this story from the POV of someone remembering. This adds a layer of nostalgia. Smart and beautiful to watch.

The acting is what I expect from a youth drama that understands itself: good natured, solid and well-rounded performances of characters growing up as we see them going through different every day experiences involving school, friends, family and love.

Overall, I fully enjoyed this cdrama that features an easy to cheer for characters, with good chemistry, learning about life and themselves. This is why I love youth dramas, they can be a source of joy and energy.

Cute, simple and beautiful
HanisAddiction24 November 2023
Its a very simple, fun and an adorable representation of sweet love and friendships. I loved this cdrama and the onyl reason for the 8/10 is due to my liking for some more action and some form of conflict.

It was super cute and perfect for when you don't wanna watch anything heavy.

Plus, the cinematography, wardrobe and aesthetics of this drama was top tier. They clearly put a lot of thought into how they represented each character.

If you aren't a huge fan of stories without conflict and some sort of drama, this brilliance is unfortunately not for you, BUT don't let that stop you from giving it a try. Perhaps you may actually enjoy something different and light hearted.

Just perfect
nsonontsii23 September 2023
Man oh man did I enjoy this series. Not gonna lie though the first 3/4 episodes almost made me drop the series because the 2nd hand embarrassment was killing me, but boy am I glad I stuck around. This is a feel good type of drama there are no love triangles, no unnecessary misunderstandings, just a beautifully written story about love and friendships. I loooved their friendship, it was so beautiful to watch grow and develop. Normally by the 12th episode I get frustrated when the romantic side of the drama is not progressing fast enough but with this one I did not feel like that because of the friendship they had as a group. I was a bit scared that once they eventually get together the cuteness would dissappear like I felt with HL, but here even after they got together it still felt wholesome and cute. If you're someone that likes drama, I don't think you'll enjoy this one. This is just a simple, wholesome, straightforward and beautifully written story about love, friendship and uplifting one another. Loved it.

Heartwarming crush that stays the distance
Equuleus7813 November 2023
I thought 24 episodes of this CDrama were going to be too much but this sweet, uncomplicated but funny love story hit all the right notes and didn't outstay its welcome. Compared to KDramas not much happens, there are no villains, no cheating, no bullying, no awful parents and few disasters at work. Here is modern China, confident, hard working, independent, charming and working towards the goals of young love. Nothing felt forced, shoe horned or fake, I really enjoyed watching these kids grow up and embrace adulthood without endless petty drama.

I laughed out loud so many times watching this and as much as I love KDramas, not many were as clever and amusing as this one. More like this please.

If you love coming of age, friend to lover, simple sweet romance this is the one
leahcubed26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Is my rating. This is a 2023 Chinese romantic drama with 24, 30-40 minute episodes.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

Su Zaizai (Zhang Miaoyi) and Zhang Lurang (Zhou Yiran) are complete opposites in personality. Where Zhang Lurang is cold and aloof, Su Zaizai is social and friendly. That doesn't stop Zaizai from developing an instant crush on Zhang Lurang when they have a chance encounter at a corner store on a rainy day. Zaizai begins to persistently put herself in Zhang Lurang's sphere to get his attention and win his friendship. Zaizai turns out to be just what Zhang Lurang needed to help him break out of his cold, lonely shell. Tolerance becomes friendship then evolves to something more.

Review

This is one of the most heart warming romantic comedies I have ever seen. The main romance is credible, well paced, believable and incredibly sweet. The bonus, second couple romance, is also very touching. So many interesting relationships between the friends and family. If you like heart warming romances, coming of age, or friends to lovers then you should definitely add this to your watch list.

Spoilers

Zhang Lurang's mother was a tiger mom to the extreme. Her expectations were so unreasonably high she was not satisfied her son was a top student. His lack of self confidence and shy/withdrawn nature was the consequence of his mother's extreme behavior. It is harmful to compare one person to another in a negative way. Does it happen in real life. Absolutely. My spouse was subjected to that same lens and had many emotional problems as a result.

To watch Zaizai's sunny persistence draw Zhang Lurang out of his protective cocoon was a delight to watch. In one part someone said your girlfriend is clingy and he corrected them saying he was the one who was clingy. Later they commented all the women were after him romantically yet he never wavered. It made perfect sense because she literally saved him from himself and he said as much.

There were occasions where the group of five were together just enjoying their friendship and being young and I loved it. It is a gift to have people like that in your life.

I loved how all the kids loved the one friend's grandmother. They hung out at her restaurant and she fed them good food.

#ZhangMiaoyl #ZhouYiran.

" Probably worth watching , it's the best Cdrama (10/10) ever "
sabaafrozdanish7 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If we talk about other dramas , When I fly towards you is better than any of them because of its storyline, Main lead (Zhang Lurang) (Su Zaizai), supporting actors (Jiang jia) (Gu Ran) and their friendship and relationship.

Zhang Lurang is a cold and shy boy with a low self-esteem and confidence and who has a warm and cute spot only for his girl . He is every girl's dream. Despite being handsome , good looking, cute , and boyfriend material with zero man ego , he gives outstanding performance in academics too. He is the best character I have ever seen in any of the drama.

Su Zaizai is a cute , beautiful girl with a warmth appearance who heals Zhang Lurang's wounds and helps him built his confidence and self-esteem . She helps Zhang Lurang to improve his English grades and later they both tutor each other by which they started knowing each other closely and the turned from friends to lovers .

I love the way the director focused on the side actors that the side actors even became some people's favourite. Yes, I am talking about Jiang jia , Gu Ran and Guang Fuang. The way Gu Ran liked Jiang jia and loved her since the beginning made me sometimes cry. Their love story is also incredible Gu Ran is a funny and handsome boy who always tries to help others and never recalls it . Jiang jia is a serious girl who have strong feelings for Shen Quianyu but later when she realised that she was.in love with Gu Ran, she waited for till the end and finally got his love and they both became couple .

Zhang Lurang , Su Zaizai, Jiang jia, Gu Ran and Guang Fuang were best friends. Their friendship stole the viewers heart and encourage them towards friendship and love. The way of their love for their friends and helping them during their worst phase of life , the story line was showing the ups and down in teenagers life and motivated them towards study, friendship, ups and down of life , family matters and relationships.

They presented the drama by the best way they can. I would probably recommend everyone if you are looking for something amazing and mind blowing to watch , you should definitely watch it .

The series is healing and amazing
khushbooshaw-744972 October 2023
The all main characters got their time in series. The story is about first crush to love, friendship and bond they share with different people. Each bond in series depicts a different aspect of love.

The story is non toxic without any misunderstanding, maximum any misunderstanding last for one and half episode. It's best drama so far.

The series shows perfectly how communication is the key in any relation. The way zaizai pursue the rang with dignity and right way, just love it. The bond between fang and his grandmother is heartwarming. The chemistry shared between gu ran and jia is awesome. The friendship of this group is worth watching..

Lighthearted and cute but often uneventful
hanalisss10 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I mean it is not bad, by all means, but it's way overrated.

This show it's too simplistic and bland to be this high in ratings.

It has some good things about it of course, some sweet moments and a few things that gives it a special and unique touch giving it a boost of quality but that's about it.

The majority of the actors, specially the main male lead are average at best, which I understand given their young age. The character making the show shine is the female lead, she truly makes the show go on.

The script is not bad but is not anything special either, has a sentence at the end of every episode but nothing meaningful ( although might be lost in translation unfortunately...)

The show is entertaining, sweet and endearing but mostly uneventful and a bit bland. Nothing dramatic or too complicated. Very lighthearted.

For me the worst thing was the lack of sense of time transitioning year after year. It felt like it was passing days. Even their hair style and hair length remained EXACTLY the same from when they where 16 until when they were 25... completely unrealistic and nonsensical. It felt like they were completely stuck in the past.

For me was an average drama and i have seen way better school dramas, don't get the hype.

Very much worth watching drama series
yashmapriya4 July 2023
It was such a sweet and cute drama. Really worth watching. This drama was just very smooth and Lovable. Lead actors are very young yet they played a very good role. I was just Zhang Lurang. The way he talks and his cute little smile the way he shows his love towards her it's really lovable. Zhang Lurang, Su Zaizai their names will be remembered for a life tym. Hope they all will be successful in their real lives also. In the final episode I was just cried it was very emotional and also a very happy ending. I miss my good old days. I'll definitely recommend this drama to watch.people will definitely like this drama.

Relief from feeling feelings
elc20058 October 2023
If you have been weighed down by deep, thought provoking dramas, that swing you from giddy laughter to sobbing at the ceiling, then piece of cotton candy is made for you.

You will get nothing but sweets for all 24 episodes. Even when there is a slight flicker of drama, the writer quickly douses that flame with a milkshake.

The lead actress cries out her love interests name "Rangrang" in the same baby voice from beginning to end. From 16 to adulthood, not a single argument ever. What a perfect love story. It only took them 3 years of her throwing herself at him for them to finally "DATE".

The best part was how when they are already in the type of relationship adults progress to after years of dating, little miss bright eyes still acts like shes14 and kissing a boy under the bleachers....

Anyway. There's no way the male character would like this girl in real life. Good thing its just tv.

Seriously, only watch if want to feel the blandest of emotions :)

Plotless series
geewhiz4619 August 2023
I am attempting to review this series - the only problem is there is nothing much to review.

Highschool friends take endless photographs of them having a good time - at amusement arcades - the beach - the aquarium - camping - etc. Zaizai falls for Rangrang - and pursues him relentlessly throughout. Her best friend falls for another student who doesn't return her feelings and is soon gone from the plot. The two female leads seem to share the same amount of screen time which is strange.

The constant bright eyed saccharin smile of ZaiZai got on my nerves - it seemed at times that it had been glued onto her face. There was an attempt at drama with Rang Rang's hateful mother who constantly put him down in favour of his younger brother.

A very brief feminist interaction got the product placement achieved.

There was another feeble attempt at a love rival who desired Rang Rang but it went nowhere.

In fact nothing went anywhere. The kisses - when they eventually turned up were very lack lustre.

The schoolmate Fang - couldn't keep his hands off the other boys - and never ended up with a girlfriend - what we are supposed to make of that I don't know.

This was about 14 episodes too long - and in need of a strong writer. It felt like it was written and directed by a teenager, If you are an adult - be warned.

A simple, yet super sweet love story!
priyashashank795 July 2023
It is quite uncommon to come across a love story that doesn't have twists and turns, misunderstandings, villains, conniving ex's, and other common tropes. The story was beautiful from the word go, the FL was too pretty and charming, she behaved like a kid at times but I guess it suited her, it was refreshing to see that she did not try to hide her feelings even when the ML was slow to recognise and respond. I had seen the ML in Falling into your smile and liked him there as well. I chose to watch this series because I recognised the ML, but the five friends were all too lovable, I loved their friendship, and I loved that there were no serious love triangles. Apart from their friendship as a group, the individual friendships of the two girls and the three boys was very beautiful. I generally avoid watching high school romances since they don't appeal to me, me being in my forties already, but this one was a very refreshing, swoon worthy and beautiful series. I highly recommend it!!

Heart warming
anapuello24 October 2023
Great to watch. It is a feel-good love story. I have watched the show countless times and currently re-watching, and every time it leaves me feeling warm and feeling happy. That is how much I loved it. Her persistence, endurance, happiness, and wittiness were infectious. Seeing Lu Rang becoming more expressive in showing emotions and love for her was incredible. Wishing for all teens out there falling in love for the first time to have such an amazing long-lasting relationship. This is what your first love should be like. I agree with the comment(June 30), watch it as soon as you can. Love it!

A Cute And Fun Series!
spasek13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Coming on the heals of "Hidden Love," I decided to do another Chinese drama (my second one). "When I Fly Towards You" is actually a very light and delightful series, although it lacks the depth and heart of the previously mentioned series. It's a series that doesn't really take any chances or risks. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt that there were missed opportunities, and thus, this series, while very good, is very "vanilla."

While the series is about a quiet, shy boy and a perky, vivacious young 16-year-old girl, the series could have almost been called, "School Friends" or something to that effect. I'd say that a good 40-45% of the series is focused on the five friends in their high school days, and the rest is on the two protagonists who should have been the focus and had more screen time.

Su Zai Zai is a very upbeat young girl, who always has a smile on her face, and certainly isn't shy at all. If you're looking for the doe-eyed girl who bats her eyes and waits for the boy to make his move, Zai Zai is not that girl. She is tenacious in the pursuit of her dreams and goals, and she makes no apologies for her direct and abrupt manner. Her target is the very quiet, shy boy, Zhang Lu Rang.

Zhang Lu Rang is a boy who barely cracks a smile. He quietly goes about his days, even when girls are lining up to have a chance with the handsome and brilliant Lu Rang. However, he gives none of them even a glance...that is, until he runs into Zai Zai at a small corner store. Her first reaction is to call him "an idiot" for walking to the store without an umbrella. She quickly regrets her reaction, and as soon as she sees him again at their military training, she's quickly in hot pursuit. She teases him, playfully needles him, and showers him with cute remarks. Anything to bring this quiet boy out of his shell. At first, he tries to shrug her off, but Zai Zai's charm and quick wit soon begin to melt the "ice king."

We soon discover the reason behind Lu Rang's shyness, which we realize is a result of very low self-esteem. His parents are both tiger parents, some of the most monstrous forms of child abusers there are. Only westerners with their indifference toward their children would give tiger parents a run. I know first-hand because I am an ESL teacher and have seen some of the most horrifying things from tiger parents and how they abuse their own children. Lu Rang is constantly berated by his parents, especially his mother who believes that he is a failure, despite his exemplary grades. His younger brother is the golden child of the family, who outshines even Lu Rang academically. There are no warm words of encouragement or comfort from Lu Rang's cold mother during their exchanges, and it's quite clear that Lu Rang's brother is the favorite.

Zai Zai uses her charm and love for Lu Rang to let him know that he's none of the things that his parents believe him to be. She becomes a ray of hope for him, as he very slowly begins to grow in confidence. Zai Zai simply won't give up on him, nor will she allow him to sulk alone. Bubbly and perky, Zai Zai always finds a way to get the smallest crack of a smile out of Lu Rang.

The series ran into a crossroads. Focus on Zai Zai and Lu Rang or focus on the group of friends. Rather than picking one road, it tried to do both. The focus of the series should have been on Zai Zai and Lu Rang. I wanted more scenes with them. I wanted to find out how Lu Rang is able to resolve his problems with his parents-if at all. Instead, his parents all but disappear from the series from about the 12th episode. This is an area that could have, and should have been, explored in more depth as well as come up with more ways of showing the transformation of friendship between Zai Zai and Lu Rang into romance. Unfortunately, when you try to give the same attention to two stories, you end up coming up short in both. The old Native American saying of, "If you chase two rabbits, you'll lose them both."

"Hidden Love" dared to delve deeply into the characters of its two protagonists, and the payoff was well worth it. We felt close to these characters, caring about how they were going to overcome their obstacles. In this series, there really isn't ever any real conflict or problems that Zai Zai and Lu Rang must deal with. For Zai Zai, it's dealing with her boss acting like a pimp with her. For Lu Rang, it's talking things out and resolving things with his brother.

It's the charm and performance of the cast that really makes the series work, despite not having the courage to delve more deeply below the surface. There are many funny and cute moments that still make this series more than watchable, but I just couldn't help feeling that it was also a missed opportunity.

We still get those really awkward and silly intimate moments where college-aged kids act like 13-year-olds whenever a kiss, a hug, or even holding hands might occur. They make too big of a deal out it, which also flies in the face of logic and reality, even in China. They react as though they are about to commit a crime.

Zhang Miao Yi (Zai Zai) is a cute performer. With those eyes and dazzling smile, we can see why so many are captivated by the amount of charm that she brings to the table. She's a bit inconsistent with her romantic scenes, however, especially her kissing scenes. Many of them felt wooden and forced. If you're an actress who doesn't like doing these kinds of roles, then you simply shouldn't do them. There were times when she was very believable with Zhou Yi Ran (Lu Rang) and others when she almost looked out-of-place.

Zhou Yi Ran was good too, but he needed to find a way to make Lu Rang likable and charming, despite his shyness and low self-esteem. Too often, he came across as stiff. It's a tough task to balance these traits, and yet, that is another reason why the series should have allowed him to do more had they put him front and center rather than being a peripheral character too often.

Because of the imbalance between the two plots, the series also suffers from pacing issues. We'd get an episode to update us on Zai Zai and Lu Rang, and then we'd get one that scarcely showed them at all, which leads us to a warp-speed ending in the last two episodes where we constantly jump years ahead within the space of a few minutes. It felt as if the director said, "Okay, we've got to hurry and wrap this up!" It didn't have the natural feeling of an organic ending like "Hidden Love" had.

If you're looking for something very light and fun without much else, then you're likely to enjoy this series!

Light, Simple and Innocent Romance
kingi-2040412 March 2024
I picked this up to watch at random, and I am glad I did. As I am not usually a huge fan of teen romances, but this is one I have re-watched a few times now, it's quite light and upbeat, about a girl who falls in love with a social recluse classmate at first sight, and how she injects herself into his life, whilst helping him grow as a person, the romance is simple and pure without any of the typical drama which threatens to break them apart which honestly was quite refreshing.

Compared to most Chinese series, this one is quite short, being only 24 episodes, but they are well paced, the story and characters are relatable, the chemistry and acting are also good.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! I am an EXTREMELY picky rater and yet i give this 10/10. I am someone who dislikes teen/school romances and yet this drama just did it for me. Literally has everything in it. The pacing in it is phenomenal. Its like all my needs were statisfied with this one drama. Everytime I finish watching it.. i cry. BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO LEAVE THE CHARATCERS. Each character is beautifully developed and yes it might be slow but its pure and wholesome and the best kind of love. This review is not eloquent however I hope it conveyed my pure excitement and love for this drama. I need a su zaizai and zhang lurang in my life ASAP. This drama >>>>

Absolutely loved every single second of every single episode of this series! The script and how this show was filmed was so incredible. Loved the absolute consistency of characters and their development. It's certainly one of my most favourite CDramas to date! Absolutely lovely to watch (and rewatch). I particularly loved the main leads. Their chemistry is lovely on screen and it fabulous to see a strong female character who has gumption!!! What a delight!!! The device of the video notes is beautiful and I especially loved that every episode had a theme. This truly was a heartwarming story and series to watch. Loved it!
